Fall 2022
A writer’s dream turns into a nightmare as Sergei Maxudov’s novel is finally going to be presented as a play at the renowned Independent Theater of Moscow, and the rehearsals reveal the hypocrisy and frustration of producing a truly artistic piece. A bitingly funny adaptation of Russian literary giant Bulgakov’s famous unfinished theatrical novel, Black Snow is a hilarious send-up of Stanislavsky’s famous “Method” and the acting profession in general.

Does Integrated Information Theory Make Testable Predictions About The Role Of Silent Neurons In Consciousness?, Gary Bartlett
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Arts and Humanities
Tononi et al. claim that their integrated information theory of consciousness makes testable predictions. This article discusses two of the more startling predictions, which follow from the theory’s claim that conscious experiences are generated by inactive as well as active neurons. The first prediction is that a subject’s conscious experience at a time can be affected by the disabling of neurons that were already inactive at that time. The second is that even if a subject’s entire brain is “silent,” meaning that all of its neurons are inactive (but not disabled), the subject can still have a conscious experience. …

Introduction:
Forty years ago, Jesuit philosopher and theologian Ignacio Ellacuría accepted an honorary doctorate from Santa Clara University and delivered a commencement address with which some of us here today are likely familiar. In the concise and penetrating speech, Ellacuría proposed a vision of the university as both a center of intellectual inquiry and cultural production, and as a “social force”—a place concerned with the transformation of social reality.

Identity development models for Black males are limited, particularly within the context of higher education. Within this qualitative study, we used constructivist grounded theory to develop a theory of Black male identity development at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). We were guided by the following research questions: (1) How do the experiences at a historically Black college or university influence the identity development for Black males? (2) What externalfactors influence identity development for Black males who attend a historically Black college or university? Eight Black males participated in this study, each completing series of semistructured interviews. Derived from the …

83 On The Brink The Dangers Of Rhetoric In A Nuclear Armed World, Andrew Dubois
83 On The Brink The Dangers Of Rhetoric In A Nuclear Armed World, Andrew Dubois
Student Scholarship & Creative Works
The early 1980s, as described by Mikhail Gorbachev, were marked by escalating tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union. Ronald Reagan's declaration of the Soviet Union as an "evil empire" in 1983 intensified geopolitical tension, notably followed by the Soviet Airforce mistakenly shooting down a civilian airliner. The release of "The Day After" highlighted the horrors of nuclear war, coinciding with a war scare during the Able Archer military exercise. These events underscored the dangers of Cold War paranoia and Reagan's foreign policy shortcomings, emphasizing the need for diplomacy to thaw relations and mitigate the threat of nuclear …

This case study explores the techniques used to interpret a commemorative exhibition staged in Dublin city library between the 14th of August and the 31st of October, 2019. Through the use of a range of audio-visuals, original images, text, memorabilia and guided tours, the exhibition provided a multi-sensory experience, that engaged different cohorts of visitors with the collections, information and ideas on display. They provided a powerful means of …
