Elis Gruffydd And The Welsh Historical Tradition, Ann Dobbs Riley-Adams Dec 2022

Elis Gruffydd And The Welsh Historical Tradition, Ann Dobbs Riley-Adams

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Elis Gruffydd’s Cronicl is the longest piece of original prose ever written in the Welsh language, and the first example of writing by a Welsh author for a Welsh audience produced on the Continent. In 2018, Elis’s Cronicl was added to the prestigious UNESCO UK Memory of the World Register, one of only five such recognitions in Wales, giving the Cronicl globally recognized status. Despite this, Elis’s Cronicl is understudied, a “forgotten gem” most of which has never been transcribed, translated, or published in book form. Elis lived and wrote in the British military center and staple port, Calais, which …

Schools Of Rivals: Physicians, Fights, And Reform In Nineteenth-Century, Southern Medical Education, Laura Elizabeth Smith Dec 2022

Schools Of Rivals: Physicians, Fights, And Reform In Nineteenth-Century, Southern Medical Education, Laura Elizabeth Smith

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

While the professionalization of medicine in the nineteenth century hinged on community trust, faculty at Southern medical schools hurt their own reputations with their proprietary schools, their public rivalries, and their competition for clinical material and cadavers. Attempts to regulate medical schools also became fodder for doctors to slander each other, all arguing that their methodologies and their schools were superior. This fierce competition resulted from the constant need to lure in more students to ensure these schools’ survival, but it hurt the reputation of doctors as a whole, convincing the public that one doctor seemed just as incompetent and …

Beyond The Classroom: Building Professional Skills With The Flyaway Mural, Augusta Gaston

Honors Theses

In April of 2022, I completed a collaborative mural at Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Reflection Riding hosts a radio antenna connected to the Motus Wildlife Tracking System, which studies animal migration routes through North, Central, and South America. Working collaboratively with artists Rondell Crier, Tyus Allen, and Professor Derek Witucki, we designed and installed a mural that would communicate the Motus research to their visitors in the absence of a Reflection Riding employee. The project was funded by various grants awarded by ArtsBuild and The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and organized by budgets that …

La Casita Center: An Accompaniment Based Approach To Social Justice And Social Service., Ben Harlan Dec 2022

La Casita Center: An Accompaniment Based Approach To Social Justice And Social Service., Ben Harlan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

La Casita Center is a Louisville based nonprofit organization that accompanies Latinx immigrants in the Louisville Metro area. and that is led and staffed by Latina immigrants. In this thesis, I investigate how employees of this Latinx-immigrant led nonprofit organization, navigate challenges to both administer service and build community using the model of accompaniment. Organizations like La Casita are critically important for Latinx newcomer communities in the United States and as neoliberal and nativist-inspired policiescontinue to oppress and marginalize, La Casita provides a model for what it means to center inclusion, belonging, community, and solidarity. In a global landscape of …

The purpose of this study is to examine the policies enacted during the Reconstruction Era of the United States with regards to their effectiveness at promoting and protecting the civil liberties of the newly freed population. Examining federal and local policies and statutes, along with a detailed examination of United States v. A Fresh Look At A University Website: Redesigning The Graphic Communication Website, Kristy Leung, Samantha Kim Dec 2022

A Fresh Look At A University Website: Redesigning The Graphic Communication Website, Kristy Leung, Samantha Kim

Graphic Communication

Designed over ten years ago, the landing page of the Graphic Communication website does not reflect the artistic talents of the department and exhibits poor navigation and usability. Colleen Twomey, the department chair, has expressed that prospective students, transfers, guardians, and other visitors have trouble finding relevant information on the website. As a university-affiliated site, the landing page should guide both new and returning visitors to their destination in a quick and intuitive manner. The primary goal of this project is to effectively educate new visitors who are interested in the Graphic Communication program but have minimal knowledge of what …

This project seeks to show how I managed to translate texts from English to Spanish through the process of learning the concept of translation. It specifically seeks to demonstrate how to accurately translate a notion or message from one language to another without creating misunderstandings or errors. This project includes documents from the College of Engineering at Cal Poly, that I translated from English to Spanish in the hopes that members of the Hispanic community will be able to access them and learn more about the various study options the College of Engineering offers. We live in a very diverse …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Streaming Gender, Masculinity, and Race: Luke Cage’s Impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe analyzes gender, masculinity, and race in Marvel’s transmedia universe. The analysis examines streaming television’s role in confronting social issues related to gender, masculinity, and race, such as systemic racism, white supremacy, and toxic masculinity. This study examines the impact of three Netflix series on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and The Defenders, as these series were Marvel’s initial use of streaming television. The character, Luke Cage, appears in each of these Netflix series, and while each series tells a story of its own, the …
