The return of Jews to their ancestral land can be seen as an act of imagination. A new country, citizenship, language, and institutions needed to be imagined in order to be created. The arts, too, have contributed to this act of envisioning and shaping the Jewish state. By examining artistic representations of Israel, Imagined Israel(s): Representations of the Jewish State in the Arts explores the ways in which the Israel imagined abroad and the one conjured within the country intersect, offering a space for the co-existence of sociopolitical, cultural, and ideological differences and tensions. Margaret of Anjou, who married Henry VI of England in 1445 when she was fifteen years old, was the mother of one son. This child became the most important factor in Margaret’s life. Born in 1430, Margaret’s parents were René, Duke of Anjou, and Isabelle, daughter and heir of Charles II, Duke of Lorraine. She was the niece of Charles VII of France’s wife, Marie of Anjou. Her father’s unsuccessful efforts to expand his holdings meant he was away for much of Margaret’s childhood. Prior to the 20th century, the idea of homo- and heterosexuality was virtually nonexistent. As time went on, these concepts became a major part of the human identity. The path that led to the idea of queerness, and even the pride that comes with it, was one full of hardship and discrimination. There is not much research into the connection between discrimination by law enforcement and the start of the gay rights movement, but police attacking the livelihoods of those considered homosexual, the FBI monitoring them as security risks, and even agencies formed specifically to regulate the gay community occurred …

At the time that the French novelist Colette was writing, there was a clear hierarchy between the genders that limited the representation of women in literature. In examining the main female characters within two of Colette’s novels, Chéri (1920) and La fin de Chéri (1926), we see that the characters Léa and Edmée disrupt this hierarchy. Specifically, they disturb the patriarchal structures of the time through their representation of the feminist ideas of autonomy in the aspect of freedom of choice, sexual liberation, the inversion of gender roles, and the creation of an individual identity. The philosophies of Søren Kierkegaard and Miguel de Unamuno were born within turbulent times and the rise of naturalism. As a result, they both embraced subjectivity and individualism. While the two used indirect communication to explore similar ideas, they both had very different concepts of the self, religion, and the process of making yourself a self. While Kierkegaard viewed the process of self-actualization as a mostly linear path of conquering three stages or realms of existence, Unamuno viewed these same stages as mere aspects of human existence, viewing self-actualization as distinct for every individual but generally consisting of striving for …

The Spanish film También la lluvia (2010) directed by Icíar Bollaín is a commentary about the social factors that resulted in the Water Wars of Cochabamba, Bolivia. This essay contextualizes the circumstances that led up to the violent riots that plagued Cochabamba from November 1999 to April 2000. También la lluvia centers around a foreign film crew seeking to film a movie in Cochabamba, Bolivia for its beautiful landscape and cheap labor. In the months it takes to film the movie, portraying the colonial exploitation of Native Americans, the Water War is developing in the surrounding city. This essay examines …

This paper explores the use of simulations and utopias in works of literature and film to critique and interpret social problems affecting people in society. Specifically, it examines Miguel de Unamuno's novel Niebla (1914) and Olivia Wilde's film Don't Worry Darling (2022) as examples of how authors use simulated realities to criticize societal issues. Unamuno's novel highlights the protagonist's separation between reality and fantasy, while Wilde's film creates a simulated reality that reveals toxic masculinity and gender stereotypes in society. Both works inspire fear towards technology and highlight the difficulty in distinguishing reality from illusion. This paper ultimately argues that …

Este capítulo estudia el pigmento conocido como azul maya a partir de las fuentes históricas sobre la cultura náhuatl prehispánica, específicamente la Historia universal de las cosas de Nueva España de Bernardino de Sahagún. La obra sahaguntina posibilita la identificación del nombre del azul maya en náhuatl, al mismo tiempo que contribuye a reconstruir su simbolismo en Mesoamérica, en particular, entre los nahuas. Asimismo, el capítulo explica por qué los datos contenidos en la Historia de Sahagún sugieren que el pigmento no era producido en el Valle de México, sino que llegaba ya manufacturado a manos de los artistas nahuas. …

Cuando en 2005 se encontró la Tumba del Sacerdote Lechuza en San José de Moro (SJM), no era la primera vez que se hallaban representaciones de lechuzas entre los objetos arqueológicos recuperados en el sitio y, ni muchos menos, la primera vez que las encontrábamos en el arte mochica o el arte de la región andina en general. Este estudio trata sobre las influencias artísticas, prehispánica y colonial, que han tenido y tienen los bordadores en la creación de los diseños bordados que adornan el vestido tradicional indígena contemporáneo de los pueblos de San Pablo, de Tinta y de Marangani de la provincia de Canchis (Cuzco, Perú). El bordado con máquina (maquinasqa) apareció, posiblemente, en la primera mitad del siglo xx. Creación que es atribuida al costurero indígena sampablino Julián Choquevilca que revolucionó el vestido y el vestir femenino de estos pueblos, cambiando la historia del vestido en esta provincia.
