A Musical Debt Repaid With Interest: Haydn’S “Farewell” Symphony, Clementi’S Piano Sonata, Opus 25/5, And Haydn’S Piano Trio, Hob. Xv: 26, James S. Mackay

HAYDN: Online Journal of the Haydn Society of North America

In 1772, Joseph Haydn composed his Farewell Symphony, so named because of the elaborate ruse of its closing movement, in which the performers depart one by one, leaving two violinists to complete the movement on their own. This eccentric finale, though justly famous, has overshadowed the equally bold and tonally unusual opening movement, in which Haydn bypasses the relative major in the exposition, instead concluding this section in the minor dominant. This tonal decision, though common in C. P. E. Bach (whose music Haydn knew and admired), was exceedingly rare in Haydn’s output, and represents a unique tonal experiment among …

Joan Brock, born 1943, grew up on Bryant Avenue between 173 and 174 Streets in the Bronx. The East Bronx was considered poorer than the West Bronx, split by the Grand Concourse. Both of her parents were born and raised in New York, and they met while they were both working in a tea factory. Her father would get into the business of selling vending machines until Brock was 13 and he bought a hardware store. Her mother never worked after marrying except to help her husband with the store.

This dissertation presents information about ancient Maya trade, stone tool use, tool technology, and the every-day activities at the Paynes Creek Salt Works in southern Belize. Research on chert stone tools follows traditional analysis methods with emphasis on material composition. The feasibility of stone tool analysis conducted using 3D technology is also explored, emphasizing the limitations and benefits of these methods. While chert stone tools and stone resource allocation are predominantly the foci of this work, excavations at submerged ancient salt making sites present additional artifacts, including wood and pottery, that also characterize the daily activities of people living and …

Avicenna had a great influence on Jewish thinkers throughout the Middle Ages. Jewish philosophy drew many of its conceptual constructions from the Avicenna tradition and succeeded in constructing original doctrines by reconciling Jewish tradition, Greek philosophy and its Muslim reception. The article traces the influence of Avicenna's ishraq (Enlightenment) philosophy on medieval Jewish thought. It seeks to clarify the nature of this influence, and to define its paths and repercussions on Jewish scholars and their various philosophical doctrines. Fixed expression and idioms are part of the translated discourse. They are ready-made constructions that summarize an idea or a concept by using outstanding formulas. Translate these expressions is a big challenge for the translator. Thus, a well done translation does not mean mastering the linguistic skills of both languages, since the text does not contain just linguistic facts. It is also about culture, emotions, connotations, style and the author’s genius. Formulaic language often presents significant issue in translation just as well as finding a fixed expression as equivalent.

This article analyzes the construction of TopoRadio (toporadio.org), an interactive map that showcases publications and archives about Spanish-language radio in the U.S. The map aims to promote a more inclusive and comprehensive representation of U.S. radio history by improving the visibility of contributions from Latinx broadcasters. The article addresses how map-making historically suppressed Spanish-language radio programs and proposes using critical cartography as a framework for mapping back this history. The technical elements of TopoRadio, including publication selection criteria, metadata design, geocoding process, and the appraisal of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software, are described to provide scholars with a reproducible method …
