This Zine works to bring awareness and education to domestic abuse in the United States. A history report of what has been done thus far to advocate against domestic abuse is included, as well as explanations of different tactics and models that are continuously used to combat the issue. Additionally, stories of women’s experiences with domestic violence are told to describe the issue in a real way. Tools and information about red flags, healthy relationships, and supporting and escaping domestic abuse provide individuals with ways to move forward as they approach the issue.

On a Sunday morning in July 1873, worshippers gathered for church in Brother Cheatham’s grove in Utica, Winona County, Minnesota, in the heart of America’s western frontier. Conducting the service was Ruth Matilda Rowell, an Advent Christian pastor. Assisting her was Minerva Ursula Cobb, an ordained minister in the Freewill Baptist church. The participation of two female ministers that day rendered the occasion notable. Both women were experienced preachers, with Rowell’s ministry in Minnesota dating back to the mid-1850s and Cobb’s to her arrival in 1864, with prior ministry in the state of Wisconsin. Our Zine brings awareness to the effects of social media, advertisements, and societal standards on young girls and women across the globe. We researched multiple countries in order to see how women in different cultures face eating disorders and plastic surgery in order to fit the beauty standard. Many women struggle with body image and with feeling secure as themselves due to social media filters, beauty standards, and societal pressure.

During the Spring 2023 semester, the WGSS 374: Queer Theories and Politics course studied the mutual aid and LGBTQ+ community organizing. Trans studies scholar Dean Spade defines “mutual aid is the radical act of caring for each other while working to change the world” (2020). Amidst national attacks on trans youth via anti-trans bills, our course imagined how collective care and mutual aid provide vehicles of gender-affirming safety in Winona.

During the Second World War, Japan was an imperialistic powerhouse that took over most of Southeast and South Asia during the war. In this time of conflict, Japan committed atrocities that are still being questioned to this day. One of their lesser-known war crimes was the enactment of so-called comfort stations during this war. These stations provided Japanese military men with sex from women, dubbing them “comfort women.” These stations were established widely throughout the Japanese empire after the events of the Nanking Massacre to prevent rapes of women in captured territories and to protect their soldiers from venereal disease.1 …
