"Doubt" follows a depressed and isolated young man who must contend with the physical manifestation of his depression and self doubt. Through this narrative, our protagonist learns truths about the human condition, and the lies that we all tell ourselves to keep us more expanding as human beings. This project is an exploration of the themes of community investigation and mistrust surrounding sin in Hawthorne's description of the Puritans in The Scarlet Letter. It explores these themes by using a board game as an interpretive device to fill a framework of space, place, and identity that shifts each time the game is played anew. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald tells the story of several unsatisfied characters who try over and over again to achieve happiness, which seems to be forever beyond their reach. In their cycles of dissatisfaction, many of the characters use romance, courtship, and sex as a tool to create fulfilling lives for themselves, but not one of them is successful in these endeavors. Thesis: The racial, gender, and ethnic diversity of the sawmill workers was reflected in the Brotherhood of Timberworkers. The business owners resisted the organization with the general antiunion rhetoric of the era. The diverse population of the BOTW workers represents the nationwide trend away from white male labor unions.

Social isolation and human connection are key to human quality of life. This research was undertaken to understand what spaces could help to foster social interaction and connection. Third places, the place between home and work, were found to have significant positive impact on both individuals and communities. In 2020, I met a young boy named Robert who was brought to Logan Utah, from Uganda due to being a victim of sacrificial witchcraft. Since then, I've kept in touch with Robert and the organizations that help protect children in Uganda. After learning of this cruelty, my thoughts and emotions have been consumed with one question “how can I help?”. My research investigates human reason and rationality's proper function and role in the Post-Pandemic Era. First, humans can intuit reasons for their beliefs and intuitions. But more importantly, reason is the metarepresentational ability to evaluate the strengths or weaknesses of reasons and arguments. Reason, through the process of evolution, is fundamentally used for justification and argumentation. Second, individuals can summon reason to justify an established moral intuition. Argumentation helps interlocutors self-reflect on political and moral beliefs, opinions, and intuitions, influencing people to change their minds. Overall, this is a place of gathering, relaxation, and appreciation. Made out of a construction technique called rammed earth, this building has incredible thermal mass properties which contributes to it’s sustainable design.

My manuscript, Flight, is a novel concerned with intersections, and examines how the borders between humans, both artificial and circumstantial, can be interpreted as ways of connecting with one another. It is a hybrid novel written in the form of a braided essay that integrates both nonfiction excerpts that span from grief philosophy to music history to biology, and lyrical narrative. The Awakening’S Edna Pontellier, Female Companionship, And The Sea, Mary Aldrich

Since the release of Kate Chopin’s foundational feminist novel The Awakening, scholars have speculated about what the protagonist Edna Pontellier’s journey says about 19th-century womanhood. Utilizing a framework established by queer theorists Adrienne Rich and Elizabeth LeBlanc, I argue that Edna represents a “metaphorical lesbian,” who rejects her expected social role to live a women-centered life. This identity manifests through her relationships with the feminine “mother-woman” Adèle Ratignolle and the more socially-independent pianist Mademoiselle Reisz. Edna’s displeasure with both these contrasting lifestyles contributes to her return to the sea, an unambiguously female figure Edna simultaneously views as a mother …

Scholars have begun to explore the sexuality binary and the way it is experienced by and reinforced among bisexual individuals. However, extant research has not yet analyzed the experiences of bi+ individuals in heterosexual relationships, including those who have never experienced a non-heterosexual relationship. The current study seeks to fill this gap through a case study of bi+ individuals in Utah. Relying on in-depth interviews with sixteen bi+ identified individuals, this study explores the experiences of bi+ individuals engaged in heterosexual relationships and how these individuals define their sexuality and negotiate their identity. An initial study of the secondary literature surrounding Christina the Astonishing and Margaret of Ypres showed a lack of attention to the witnesses used by Thomas. I researched primary and secondary literature surrounding the hagiographies of Margaret of Ypres and Christina the Astonishing and the function of witnesses in secular and religious courts to generate guidelines to assess how witnesses were used. Transgender individuals are erased from the historical narrative due to little definitive evidence of their existence in language, literature, or the archaeological record.
