This paper examines the evolution of xenophobia in the United States, arguing that its core themes of fear of outsiders, economic anxiety, and threats to national identity have remained consistent. However, the mechanisms of its spread have transformed alongside developments in media. The paper uses a qualitative historical methodology supported by quantitative data to trace anti-immigrant sentiment. It examines anti-immigrant attitudes toward Irish immigrants in the 19^th century, and reactions to undocumented immigrants in the late 20^th and early 21^st century. This essay examines the exponential evolution of digital music production technology, from the MIDI and sampling revolution of the 1980’s, to the contemporary DAWs, virtual instruments and AI-driven tools that have democratised creativity within the modern discipline. However, it also explores how an abundance of cost-effective tools introduces psychological challenges that inhibit creative potential. It critiques "choice overload," where a multitude of options induce decision paralysis, homogenise outputs and stifle innovation. Countering this, the essay advocates for self-imposed constraints as a catalyst for focused ingenuity and flow states, exemplified by legendary musicians such as Fatboy Slim and David Byrne. Kalamazoo, Michigan’s black history runs deep. This thesis aims to trace that black history, and situate it within the realm of black radio as a cultural phenomenon. Rising to its provenance in the mid-1960s, black radio has been, and continues to be, a rallying point for African American communities across the U.S., particularly in Chicago and Detroit. Kalamazoo, a halfway point between these two major cities, has a lack of such stations. Throughout my formal music education and general music upbringing, I have noted the erasure of the LGBTQ identities of artists, composers, musicians, and historical figures from formal music curricula, and from the concert hall. In response to this erasure, I am increasing visibility through the act of record-keeping by taking inventory of the works written for flute by LGBTQ composers. In searching for flute music by LGBTQ composers, it became clear that works by these composers were not organized into a centralized collection, or body of work.

This paper investigates the role of ambiguity as a source of inspiration and creative agency. Ambiguity is presented not as a limitation, but as a medium through which artists explore, experiment, and generate meaning. Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies, a deck of cryptic prompts designed to provoke reflection and disrupt habitual thinking, illustrates how indeterminate instructions can stimulate the imagination without prescribing outcomes. Building on this principle, the study introduces Secluded Strategies, a personalised deck of Eno-inspired prompts derived from his artistic statements and reflections. In this thesis, I argue that the persuasiveness of solipsism—understood as skepticism of the existence of anything or anyone outside of one’s own private mental life—rests not on its intrinsic argumentative force, but on the degree of commitment to a certain philosophical dogma. I use the problem of solipsism to tease out this dogma, which I dub the Primacy of Privacy. Devin Deweese's book Islamization and Native Religion in the Golden Horde: Baba Tükles and Conversion to Islam is a keystone work in the study of post-Mongol invasions Central Asia. He explores how Shamanism, the indigenous religion of Mongol tribes, remained culturally relevant in the Golden Horde following the widespread conversion to Islam in hagiographical narratives.

This article explores creative practice as research through an innovative approach to musical improvisation and recording that challenges traditional boundaries between music and literature. Working with experienced improvising musicians, this study investigates how poetic texts serve as inspiration and catalysts for new creative processes and musical outcomes. Using a practice-based research framework, the project positions poetry as both creative stimulus and constraint, resulting in a suite of short recorded works. The collaboration with a poet prompts a reconsideration of process, recording, and audience experience, with the final release presenting instrumental music alongside printed poetry, but without spoken narration. This article articulates a new methodology, named ‘shimmer’. Shimmer is an embodied, intuitive, temporally irregular, and affectively attuned methodology for creative-practice research. Grounded in feminist philosophy, phenomenology, autotheory, and Csikszentmihalyi’s theory of flow, shimmer names the state in which corporeal knowing precedes cognition and generates theoretical insight. Drawing from lived episodes of illness, performance, lineage-work, and practice-led research, I argue that shimmer functions as an onto-epistemological mode of inquiry: a somatic process that moves between the imaginary, symbolic, and real to produce conceptual clarity with velocity. The creative process inherently utilises critical thinking, reflective practice and problem-solving skills, but students can struggle with the mental effort required to engage in critical thinking. This paper examines this phenomenon through a critical reflection as a case study, utilising the Integrated reflective cycle method to engage both in reflective practice and theory. Through the reflection on in-class experiences, errors in the students’ inductive reasoning and a tendency for them to shortcut mental challenges with experiential heuristics were identified, with students appearing to seek cognitive ease over critical metacognition. This paper examines the complex nature of authorship as it is reshaped within technologically mediated creativity. Drawing on theoretical perspectives on authorship, agency, and technological mediation, it argues against binary notions of artistic originality and instead frames the author as a “node” within a vast network of technological and cultural influences. The use of peer-reviewed texts is standard practice in academic papers. However, should a magazine written by and for practitioners be included in such articles? I argue that several factors can influence the creation of an academic paper, and that sources from various origins should be considered. Four points are explored that can affect the choice of references and from these, I posit that while robust analysis and depth are essential, there is no necessity to exclude non-peer-reviewed papers. When their mother unexpectedly passes away, Avery leaves their small town of Monticello, Kentucky for Lexington, Kentucky, taking Krista’s dulcimer along with her. The dulcimer was built by their late father, who intended to build two, but passed away before he could complete the second, dedicated to Avery. This project offers a critical edition of El Libertador, a symphonic poem composed by Costa Rican artist Julio Mata Oreamuno (1899–1969). The piece holds special importance in Costa Rican orchestral music and represents the symphonic poem genre in Latin American compositions. Although Mata is acknowledged as a key figure in the growth of Costa Rican musical institutions and composition during the twentieth century, much of his orchestral work remains rarely performed and not easily accessible to today’s performers.

The purpose of the study is to test whether knowledge of a second language in college students can affect perceptions and prejudices towards speakers with foreign accents. The testing was completed through both implicit and explicit attitudinal measures in regard to recorded audio stimuli. The explicit attitudinal testing was performed through participant self reporting of attitudes. Participants were presented with first (L1) or second (L2) language accented English samples and then rated that speaker in terms of various characteristics or traits that represented the speaker's solidarity and status.
