Conflict is one of the primary reasons church leaders leave churches, quit vocational ministry, are terminated or are ineffective in their leadership and Christian service. Church leaders become discouraged, less effective, quit their leadership positions, or even leave congregations because of conflict or disagreements over decisions. Ineffective decision-making and conflict within the leadership team harm the ministry organization and the leaders. A fascinating study that shows how the intersection of technology and politics has shaped South African history since the 1960s.

This book details the development of an interconnected technological system of a coal mine and of the Matimba and Medupi power stations in the Waterberg, a rural region of South Africa near the country’s border with Botswana. South Africa’s state steel manufacturing corporation, Iscor, which has since been privatized, developed a coal mine in the region in the 1970s. This set the stage for the national electricity provider, Eskom, to build coal-fueled power stations in the Waterberg.

A series of talks was given at Grandpont House, Oxford in 2013 to mark the half-century anniversary of C. S. Lewis’s death and the fortieth anniversary of J. R. R. Tolkien’s passing. The address by Walter Hooper focused on memories of C. S. Lewis and his friends and took that story up to Lewis’s death on 22 November 1963.1 The essay below, given on a different occasion,2 is a complementary address covering the period from 1963 to the death of Owen Barfield in 1997. Hooper himself passed away in 2020.

The first French conference focused on C. S. Lewis was held at Lille Catholic University in June 2011. Bruce L. Edwards delivered a plenary talk there exploring the theme of friendship as demonstrated in the correspondence between Lewis and his American readers. Edwards had intended to revise this address for inclusion in the memorial volume dedicated to his friend Chris Mitchell. Edwards died in 2015 while still making revisions to the draft below.

The focus of the smaller collection below—comprised of six letters and postcards written between 1950 and 1960—is Joy’s correspondence with her first cousin, Edward (aka Eddie or Eddy) Rosenthal. Rosenthal was the son of Henry and Rebecca Rosenthal; Rebecca was the sister of Joy’s mother, Jennette Davidman, and thus Joy’s aunt. Rosenthal worked at the Los Angeles Examiner (est. 1903-62), a newspaper founded by William Randolph Hearst. The subjects of their correspondence include discussion of family members, notably Joy’s husband Bill Gresham as well as her sons David and Douglas, and a number of other extended kindred. The sermon was supposedly titled “‘None Other Gods’: Culture in War Time,” although no extant copy has that full title. His text was an obscure verse from the Book of Deuteronomy. It was the first sermon he had ever preached. Before the end of the war, the preacher, Clive Staples Lewis, a native of Belfast, a veteran of the Great War, and a rather recently converted agnostic, had become a household word in Great Britain and beyond as a defender of the Christian faith.

In addition to a substantial collection of Lewis first editions, the Lanier Collection contains several handwritten Lewis manuscripts. Previously published Lewis pieces in the Lanier collection include eleven letters or excerpts from letters, a manuscript draft of “Learning in Wartime” from the collection The Weight of Glory, an early version of the poem “A Cliché Came Out of its Cage,” and a penciled outline of notes for Beyond Personality, later included in Mere Christianity. Fourteen Lewis manuscripts in the Lanier Collection are published here for the first time.

This work uses the methodologies of both art history and medical sociology through the ‘syndemic’ framework to engage in close readings of two selected artworks, Exit (1997) by Nancer LeMoins and Violation of Africa (1984) by Affrekka Jefferson. An interdisciplinary approach to these works enables consideration of how multiple marginalized identities—i.e., living with a stigmatized illness, being a woman, being LGBTQIA+, being a person of color—appear in visual art and shape illness experience; these ideas are investigated through a formal and iconographic reading of the selected artworks.
