Jasper Adams, Episcopal minister, President of the College of Charleston, and (ex-officio) Horry Professor of Moral and Political Philosophy delivered this oration on November 1, 1834 before the Society of Graduates of the College of Charleston. Noting that moral causes of the prosperity of nations had been ignored, Rev. Adams reviews and examines the effect of morality on the advancement of nations.

Poetry And Autographs Album Belonging To Mary Virginia Wood, Mary Virginia Wood Forten

Abolitionist Mary Virginia Wood Forten (1815-1840), the mother of Charlotte Forten Grimké (1837-1914), created one of the five extant antebellum African American friendship albums. Born enslaved in North Carolina and emancipated at 17 by her wealthy planter father, she, her mother, and her three siblings relocated to Philadelphia in 1833. There, she became a charter member of the interracial Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society and the Female Vigilance Association. She married Robert B. Forten, son of antislavery activist James Forten, in 1836, and their daughter Charlotte Louise Forten was born the following year. She died of consumption in 1840 at the …

Local Government Records
In 1804, the Ohio General Assembly enacted the Ohio Black Codes to govern black and mulatto people living in the state. Under these Codes, free blacks and mulattos were required to register at their local court, proving they were free by providing emancipation papers or witnesses who could prove their “free” status and guarantee their good behavior with a monetary surety.
