Lewis acknowledged he lacked professional credentials to write popular theology. But he also argued that until the theologians and clergy wrote books laymen could understand on such topics as spiritual warfare and the problems of evil and pain, he must stand in the gap. It is the thesis of this essay that, in the final analysis, Lewis’ legacy as a physician of the soul will rival his importance as an apologist and author of the Narnian Chronicles.

Lewis’ published correspondence provides a kind of autobiography-in-progress, and it offers a revealing glimpse of his opinions as a literary and culture critic. But perhaps the letters of most permanent value are those which Lewis saw as a part of his Christian vocation: his insights to friends, casual acquaintances and complete strangers about questions of theology, faith, spiritual formation, and even marriage and family relationships. In spite of Lewis’ sustained, earnest, and determined efforts at writing poetry through the middle 1920s, his reputation will always be based on his prose, both fiction and non-fiction. That this is the case begs the questions: Does Lewis’ poetry matter? Why bother sifting through his verse if the real gold is to found elsewhere? Should not Lewis’ poetry simply be written off as so much adolescent self-indulgence? Did not his commitment to older poetic forms and traditions hopelessly date his poetry? found myself profoundly frustrated with the polarization that became evident between Lewis’ friends and foes, devotees and detractors. At the extremes of this debate were those who apparently regarded Lewis’ work as, for all intents and purposes, Holy Writ; at the other end of it were those who, for whatever reason, regarded Lewis with disdain and contempt. Sane, balanced, objective, sympathetically-critical and critically-sympathetic assessments seemed so rare as to be almost non-existent. Excerpt: It is then something of a simplification to see Lewis as a “dinosaur” out of step with his own time. As a modern apologist he managed to retain the framework of the multi-level medieval model, but only with the assistance of credible modern sources that challenge the hegemony of the one-story “developmental” model of evolutionary naturalism. The threetier hierarchy – material, organic, spiritual – that arose out of the turnof- the-century revolt against positivism provided a means of exposing the reductive tendencies of the naturalistic orientation and affirming a traditional conception of the Supernatural that transcends natural order. Music & Synesthesia: An Exploration Of Synesthesia And Its Relation To Musical Perception, Raquel S. Johnson
Pacific Undergraduate Research and Creativity Conference (PURCC)
This research investigates synesthesia and its impact on musical perception. Synesthesia is the multimodal sensory phenomenon in which the stimulation of one sensory modality generates the experience of a second, otherwise unrelated sense. Discussed topics include: a description of synesthesia and its neurophysiological and perceptual characteristics, the historical conceptualization and documentation of synesthesia beginning with the ancient Greeks, and present-day scientific inquiry. This research explores three varying types of auditory synesthesia - chromesthesia (sound-to-color synesthesia), auditory-tactile synesthesia, and sound-gustatory/sound-olfactory synesthesia - and their multimodal sensory characteristics in relation to music. Prominent neurophysiological hypotheses regarding the existence of synesthesia are examined, …
