A cursory reading of Isagani R. Cruz’s literary theory and criticism on one hand, and his fiction on the other, suggests a disparity between Cruz as a scholarly literary critic and Cruz as a fictionist of stories “for adults only”; however, a detail in one of his short stories in his book, Father Solo and Other Stories for Adults Only, arouses a critical suspicion that his fiction is actually cultural criticism masquerading as irreverent or obscene fiction, so that the critic and the fictionist are one. This brief article explores the critical entanglements of nature, matter, and the human body in Marjorie Evasco’s poem “Elemental.” Through ecocritical erotic writing, the text establishes the “trans-corporeal” relationships between human desire and the natural environment, the language of the erotic and the craft of poetry, and the writer and the task of ecofeminist writing. Ultimately, this essay suggests that the text and the author engage with the ba’i as an indigenous source of femininity, charting a direction toward native Philippine ecofeminism.

The popular version of National Artist for Literature Edith L. Tiempo is that she holds a central position as the literary matriarch of the Philippines. However, little is known about her background as a partly tribal (indigenous) woman. This paper proposes that biography can be a form of intervention to recuperate silenced narratives and marginal lives. Drawing from the ideas of the Geneva School of Consciousness, biography can be seen as a form of reading, where latent images in an author’s works can be made manifest and reveal hidden narratives in the author’s life. This thesis delves into the often-overlooked 1991 uprising in Iraq, a significant early instance of resistance against Middle Eastern dictatorship. Rooted in the experiences shared within Michigan's Iraqi community. Focusing on southern Iraq, the thesis investigates the catalysts and mechanisms that enabled oppressed individuals under Saddam Hussein's Ba’athist regime to unite and rebel. Through extensive oral history methodologies, this research engages with diverse survivors—mothers, youth, and children—across various southern Iraqi cities. Their narratives unveil the hardships endured before, during, and after the rebellion.

Remarkably, despite oppressive conditions and violent impediments, the southern Iraqi populace achieved a formidable mass uprising. This …

Amidst the popular use of Tinder in urban society, the decision whether or not to date someone tends to be made quickly based on a photo and a short profile description. Simple as it may seem, there are moments when swiping gets challenging, especially for women. Tinder has a notorious reputation when it comes to gender-based violence. Unfortunately, despite the significant increase in online dating apps usage during the COVID-19 pandemic, this phenomenon is still highly underresearched.

Perubahan budaya nomaden Suku Badui Negev dipengaruh oleh beberapa faktor eksternal. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi fenomena tersebut, seperti adanya kebijakan Israel terhadap cara hidup Badui di Negev, yang pada awalnya dapat berkelana dengan bebas di padang gurun yang luas, sejak pembangunan Negara Israel pada 1948, semuanya berubah drastis. Transisi ini bahkan dibersamai dengan sengketa kepemilikan lahan yang terjadi antara Badui Negev dan pemerintah Israel. Suku Badui di Negev tidak lagi bisa berpindah-pindah seperti sebelumnya. Mereka mulai mengalami perubahan mulai dari pranata kehidupan, peran kaum laki-laki dan perempuan dalam ruang domestik, serta bentuk tempat tinggal mereka.

Penelitian ini menganalisis makna leksem makara yang terdapat di dalam bahasa Arab dan Al-Qur’an, dan makna kata makar yang terdapat pada bahasa Indonesia. Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi leksem makara yang diserap ke dalam Bahasa Indonesia tidak memiliki makna ‘menjatuhkan Pemerintah’ atau berasosiasi dengan politik. Untuk membuktikan leksem makara tidak memiliki makna ‘menjatuhkan Pemerintah’, seluruh leksem makara dan derivasinya di dalam Al-Qur’an yang berjumlah 43 tidak memiliki makna tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui mono no awareness yang terdapat dalam film “Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni” atau “In This Corner of the World” dengan bantuan teori mise en scène. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan metode analisis deskriptif. Lima adegan dengan empat belas foto terlampir dari film ini digunakan sebagai sampel data untuk analisis. Hasil analisis yang diperoleh menunjukkan bahwa seluruh data yang diambil dari film tersebut mengandung mono no awareness di dalamnya. Towards the end of his writing career, Bienvenido Santos published two autobiographies, Memory’s Fictions and Postscript to Saintly Life—a departure in a writing life mostly devoted to penning fictional works. This paper focuses on the last autobiography which mainly looks at Santos’s experiences as a pensionado in America. It pays attention to how Santos writes about his Philippine home while in exile, taking part in a program that is part of the American colonial period. This research aims to explain the hidden narrative in the slametan of the ulur-ulur ritual at Telaga Buret, Sawo Village, Campurdarat District, Tulungagung Regency. In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the long sequences of ulur-ulur rituals were summarized by only conducting slametan. This indicates that the main foundation of the ulur-ulur ritual is slametan. To find the core ideology of slametan, this study employed the ethnographic approach. Data were obtained through participatory research and in-depth interview. The collected data were then transcribed and analyzed using related theories. This study examines the concept of coming out as part of queer narrative within Shimanami Tasogare (2015), a manga by Kamatani Yūki. Although coming out has become an important concept within LGBTQ, previous related research tends to see coming out as a one-time achievement. This study analyses the significance of coming out in Shimanami Tasogare by using the queer narrative approach. This study applies Klein et al.’s theory (2015) which argues that coming out is a dynamic and non-linear social process. This article report the study of traditional dance in Siguntur Dharmasraya, West Sumatra. Marhasnida, a cultural activist from Nagari Siguntur, created the toga dance. This article explains how the dance was created, developed, and performed from stage to stage and passed on to the younger generation for preservation. This historical research observed and analyzed the actions of an individual closely related to the development of toga dance. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, and tracing of personal archives pertaining to various aspects of the dance, including its history and movements. Totemism is a belief in an animal or plant’s guiding spirit that is linked to a person’s character and destiny. Totemism manifests itself in tattoos as body decoration and symbols of hope, such as Yakuza tattoos (irezumi). This research aims to reveal the representation and meaning of totemistic irezumi worn by three Yakuza characters (Kazuma Kiryuu, Akira Nishikiyama, and Goro Majima) in two Yakuza-themed game series: Yakuza 0 (2015) and Yakuza Kiwami 1 (2016).
