For better and for worse, classic fairy tales have come under severe criticism as paradigms of sexist patriarchy in recent decades. Likewise, C. S. Lewis has been viewed as sexist, even misogynistic. While many fairy tale and Lewis fans might be tempted to dismiss all of these criticisms as nonsense, gender is one of the predominant discourses of our time, our questions and the varied answers are significant, and in this essay I consider how Lewis’ development of the fairy tale genre in The Chronicles of Narnia offers timeless, possibly even surprising, Christian wisdom. Lewis’ desire that his young readers would recognize and practice these virtues as signs of the “childlike faith” Jesus expects of his disciples (Mark 10:15; Luke 18:17).92 Conversely, adults are generally shown to be owners of an obtuse conscience and a recalcitrant will.

Three recently discovered letters from C. S. Lewis provide a window through which we can observe the Oxford don as he is first coming into national prominence during, and immediately after, World War II. They are a 1942 letter from C. S. Lewis to Archbishop William Temple and two 1946 letters from him to Canon Lewis John Collins. Lewis is seen in these letters struggling with the issue of calling or vocation, and this gives us a glimpse into his decision making at critical times both in his career and in the life of his country.

Hookup culture is not primarily about sex, pleasure, connection, or freedom. Hookup culture is about power—how power is used, distributed, and desired. Previous work in hookup culture discusses a discourse of desire; however, the root and nature of this desire are unclear. I posit that hookup culture, as it currently exists, is strongly related to rape culture. In this thesis, I will explicate my anecdotal, qualitative, and quantitative evidence supporting this hypothesis.

This thesis provides an overview of what hookup culture is at a broad level. It then focuses more specifically on defining it at DePauw and considering the impact …

Legal scholars have been grappling with how to handle legal cases concerning battered women since the 70s. Lenore Walker argued that battered women have a condition called battered woman syndrome that alters their perceptions. The cases by themselves do not fulfill requirements for self-defense, a justification doctrine nor duress, an excuse doctrine. I argue that battered women should be excused, not through using battered women syndrome to support pre-existing claims, but instead by using other psychological research to support Morse’s partial excuse doctrine. On October 6, 1969, long-time St. Louis Cardinals' center fielder Curt Flood was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Major League Baseball labor system bound a player to one team, with the team being able to trade players at will and set their salaries. Flood, who was involved with entrepreneurial and philanthropic efforts in St. Louis, rejected his trade to Philadelphia and sued Major League Baseball. This paper examines the implications of Curt Flood’s lawsuit against Major League Baseball on sports labor and compares that to other labor movements in the United States. Keating by their agent John King, and Jeremiah Dietz of Genesee (Potter County, Pennsylvania). King agrees to sell to Dietz 100 acres of land adjoining his father’s, “as soon as he shall have complied with the customary conditions of settlement.” The reverse shows receipts of payment on account, 1844-1853, from Cyrus Cooper, and an assignment by Cooper, 25 February 1864, of his rights under the contract to Nelson Peabody.
