Selecting Authority: The Compiler And Female Mystical Sources In Speculum Devotorum, Caitlin J. Branumthrash Jun 2023

Selecting Authority: The Compiler And Female Mystical Sources In Speculum Devotorum, Caitlin J. Branumthrash

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

The fifteenth-century Speculum devotorum, or Mirror to Devout People, is best known for incorporating the texts of mystical women into its narrative of the life of Christ, likely because it has an explicitly stated female audience—a nun of Syon. Rather than considering how the female audience may have perceived the female sources in Speculum devotorum, this article investigates the compiler’s views of his female sources based on how he incorporates them into his work. I argue that the compiler treats his female sources as full auctores, but he only includes their works when he addresses what he considers female …

"Oiez Mon Aventure": Cuer D'Acier's Nonbinary Gender In Perceforest, Brooke Heidenreich Findley

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

The character of Cuer d’Acier, or Heart of Steel, in the 15th century French romance Perceforest, has a complex gender identity that does not fit easily into a gender binary. First appearing as the courtly maiden Neronés, the character later lives and is read as a man. The romance uses both “he” and “she” pronouns to refer to Heart of Steel, often using both in the space of a single paragraph or even a single sentence. While Heart of Steel is again dressed as a woman at the end of the romance, the character’s own actions and statements …

Endogenous Political Legitimacy: The Tudor Roots Of England’S Constitutional Governance, Avner Greif, Jared Rubin Jun 2023

Endogenous Political Legitimacy: The Tudor Roots Of England’S Constitutional Governance, Avner Greif, Jared Rubin

ESI Working Papers

This paper highlights the importance of endogenous changes in the foundations of legitimacy for political regimes. It focuses on the central role of legitimacy changes in the rise of constitutional monarchy in England. It first defines legitimacy and briefly elaborates a theoretical framework enabling a historical study of this unobservable variable. It proceeds to substantiate that the low-legitimacy, post-Reformation Tudor monarchs of the 16th century promoted Parliament to enhance their legitimacy, thereby changing the legislative process from the “Crown and Parliament” to the “Crown in Parliament” that still prevails in England.

Wilfrid Sellars And Phenomenology : Intersections, Encounters, Oppositions, Daniele De Santis, Danilo Manca

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

Wilfrid Sellars tackled the difficult problems of reconciling Pittsburgh school–style analytic thought, Husserlian phenomenology, and the Myth of the Given.

This collection of essays brings into dialogue the analytic philosophy of Wilfrid Sellars—founder of the Pittsburgh school of thought—and phenomenology, with a special focus on the work of Edmund Husserl. The book’s wide-ranging discussions include the famous Myth of the Given but also more traditional problems in the philosophy of mind and phenomenology such as the

status of perception and imagination
nature of intentionality
concept of motivation
relationship between linguistic and nonlinguistic experiences
relationship between conceptual and preconceptual experiences

Moreover, …

Flat Out Rebellion: The Rule-Breaking Career Of Designer-Illustrator Seymour Chwast, Danielle Ridolfi Jun 2023

Flat Out Rebellion: The Rule-Breaking Career Of Designer-Illustrator Seymour Chwast, Danielle Ridolfi

Mendel Sato Research Award Projects

Graphic designer and illustrator Seymour Chwast evades crisp categorization. His trailblazing, seventy-year career began at midcentury, during a time of drastic change in the graphic arts. During the late 40s and 50s, American illustration was dominated by the simulated small town charm of Norman Rockwell, and the slick but false assurances of the Westport School. The Westport illustrators produced fiction illustrations and advertisements for magazines like Ladies’ Home Journal and The Saturday Evening Post. The approach was stylish but often anodyne. According to Chwast, the careful rendering of a Westport picture belied artificial narratives. “They were the enemy,” Chwast proclaimed. …

An Ambiguous Hermeneutic: Doubleness In Ingmar Bergman’S Quest For Self, Ingy Aziz Jun 2023

An Ambiguous Hermeneutic: Doubleness In Ingmar Bergman’S Quest For Self, Ingy Aziz

Theses and Dissertations

One of the functions of art in all its forms is to provide the means for self-exploration and, in this way, to enable us to relate cultural representation to the question of meaning. The beauty of cinematic art is that it gives voice to our deepest and most profound concerns and enables us to bridge the gap between personal psychology and public understanding. As interpreters, we do not always unearth the answers that we seek, but we certainly gain more insight through delving into the minds of major filmmakers in the canon of modern cinema. This thesis is on the …

Squeezed Out By The Market, Seeking Strength In The Network: Makeshift Temples And The Spatio-Affective Logics Of Survival In Singapore, Quan Gao, Orlando Woods, Lily Kong Jun 2023

Squeezed Out By The Market, Seeking Strength In The Network: Makeshift Temples And The Spatio-Affective Logics Of Survival In Singapore, Quan Gao, Orlando Woods, Lily Kong

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This paper offers an understanding of the spatio-affective workings of religious organisations – and the marketplaces they operate in and through – that go beyond capitalist logics. We do so by examining how makeshift temples representing various forms of ‘Chinese religion’ survive in Singapore. Capitalist logics fail to explain how such marginal and precarious religious organisations, which might be ‘squeezed out’ by the market, nonetheless manage to survive amid competition. Moreover, scarce attention has been paid to how religion as a social-affective system might mediate the functioning of a religious market. This paper fills the lacuna by bringing an understanding …

The Fight Against The Threat Of Witchcraft And Paganism In Anglo-Saxon England, Russell I. Knapp May 2023

The Fight Against The Threat Of Witchcraft And Paganism In Anglo-Saxon England, Russell I. Knapp

Lux et Fides: A Journal for Undergraduate Christian Scholars

Unlike the general assumption that England was completely Christianized after Augustine’s mission to the island, witchcraft and paganism thrived all throughout the Christian period of Anglo-Saxon history. Sources condemning witchcraft and paganism increased during the Danish raids in the mid-ninth century and beyond due to an increased sense of a perceived threat of paganism. King Alfred himself reacted to this threat by doing everything he could to strengthen his people in their Christian beliefs through education reform and his law code. The Church battled against the perceived threat through penitentials–which they used to discourage pagan practices. Lay-people fought against …

The Success Of Project Mercury Through The Persona Of The Mercury Seven, Cameron D. Reagan May 2023

The Success Of Project Mercury Through The Persona Of The Mercury Seven, Cameron D. Reagan

Lux et Fides: A Journal for Undergraduate Christian Scholars

There has been no shortage of literature written on the Mercury Space Program, focusing on many different aspects ranging from the personnel, technology, politics, and achievements of the program. The prevailing discussion of the space program focuses on the astronauts themselves as they gained celebrity status long before they had done anything to merit it. The vast body of scholarship on the topic takes the popularity of the Mercury Seven astronauts as matter-of-fact rather than viewing it as manufactured by NASA in order to bolster support for a largely unproven space program. By emphasizing the “everyman” aspect of the astronauts, …

Wirtschaftswunder: A Macroeconomic Study Of Germany, Connor M. Dollarhite

Lux et Fides: A Journal for Undergraduate Christian Scholars

The German economy is currently known to be an economic powerhouse of the present, but it is a mystery to most as to why this is so. By investigating historical examples, we can determine whether proposed economic policy will work, and Germany proves useful to this idea through the continued historic usage of Eucken and Erhard’s economic theories that generated the German economic miracle (Wirtschaftswunder). Germany has survived dark economic collapse and become thriving economic powerhouse today. This proliferation of success is through the three consistent pillars of their macroeconomic profile, balanced fiscal budget, maintaining price stability, and always allowing …

Protecting Youth From Mexican Drug Cartel Recruitment: The Prospects Of Educational Interventions, Lisa Hochstetler May 2023

Protecting Youth From Mexican Drug Cartel Recruitment: The Prospects Of Educational Interventions, Lisa Hochstetler

Lux et Fides: A Journal for Undergraduate Christian Scholars

This investigation considers the impact of Mexico’s War on Drugs since 2006 and the influence of widespread cartel networks on the youth population. As both victims and perpetrators of drug-related crime, the young individuals of Mexico are the center of this research. The goal of this investigation was to determine how education in Mexico’s grade schools could be leveraged to protect its youth from drug-related violence and cartel recruitment. Therefore, the study examines both the challenges suffered by the education system due to the Drug War and the prospects for educational interventions to strengthen and protect youth over and against …

Traditional Chinese culture is profoundly influential. As the society attaches more and more importance to cultural identity, projects themed with cultural revival are emerging. Yet, people have almost always only focused on formal art categories. Traditional craftsmanship that does not belong to the mainstream rarely receives much attention. Things have changed because of the increasing prominence of the creative economy in recent years, the renewal of the market and population structure, and the rise of social consciousness. Traditional folk crafts are now hot items in the cultural and creative industry, thanks to their unique cultural character, the distinguished technical skills …

Theme - Reinvigorating The Soul Of Traditional Chinese Formal Wear

SIGNED: The Magazine of The Hong Kong Design Institute

In Chinese traditions, the clothing system under Confucian rites and etiquettes is a symbol of civilisation, which is best represented by the formal attires of the royals and dignitaries. However, such tradition has faded with the succession of dynasties and the evolution of history. Very often, any residual legacy is only retained verbally by folk artisans. Chinese people do have a few more national costumes. The "Zhongshan suit" (or Mao suit) came from a Japanese imitation of European military uniforms. The more popular derivative known as "Tang suit" (or Zhong suit) is somehow restricted to a certain format and rather …
