In Defense Of Moving From A Music Production Curriculum To A Commercial Music Curriculum, Jeff Mccoy, Christopher Andrew Brown
In Defense Of Moving From A Music Production Curriculum To A Commercial Music Curriculum, Jeff Mccoy, Christopher Andrew Brown
Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education
The music industry has significantly evolved in recent years, largely due to the growth of newer forms of technology, such as distribution platforms and music production tools. With technological changes, academic institutions must understand the need to alter their curricula to better prepare students for the growing field of commercial music. Traditional music education programs emphasized classical music, music theory, and instrumental and vocal skills; however, students wanting to enter the world of commercial music need a broader range of knowledge, including business, marketing, copyright law, self-publishing, and music licensing as well as skills in operating various kinds of hardware …

A history of the development and changes of ORU’s field test over the last 50 years is presented followed by previously unpublished percentile values for N=14,076 recent prepandemic (2017–2019) field-test times for the distances for 1-mile, 1.5-mile, and 2-mile field tests for college students aged 18.9 years (N=2,198; 58.3% female), 19.1 years (N=1,574; 58.0% female), and 20.5 years (N=10,304; 57.3% female) respectively. The aim of this study is to establish an updated set of standard field test times that can serve as a valuable benchmark for assessing the cardio-vascular fitness levels of college students.
Toward A Spirit-Empowered Framework For Encouraging Intellectual Conversions In Doctoral Students, Daniel D. Isgrigg
Toward A Spirit-Empowered Framework For Encouraging Intellectual Conversions In Doctoral Students, Daniel D. Isgrigg
Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education
This article demonstrates how the five-fold gospel paradigm in Pentecostal theology can provide Spirit-empowered graduate theology students with a framework for understanding key growth moments (or intellectual conversions) in the transformational learning process that takes place in scholarly research. This five-fold paradigm utilizes the spiritual transformation concepts of conversion, sanctification, empowerment, healing, and hope correspond to intellectual conversion moments in the lives of students who are changed by their research. These five key moments can be seen as a transformational tool that allows students to be intellectually transformed by the research process.

On Becoming A Woman: A Body Horror Examination Of Dance Nation, Marley Goldman
On Becoming A Woman: A Body Horror Examination Of Dance Nation, Marley Goldman
Crossings: Swarthmore Undergraduate Feminist Research Journal
This paper explores how the darker recesses of the human body’s potential, that of blood and seeping carnage, have long been associated with the feminine; and women themselves find dark catharsis in the genre of body horror. The concept of the monstrous feminine has been studied extensively in fields of gender studies, media studies, and psychoanalysis, all seeking to explain why the gendered experience can be portrayed so aptly through horror. The paper close reads Dance Nation, a feminist play exploring puberty and gendered anger, alongside two works of body horror: Jennifer’s Body (2009) and Hatching (2022). The paper …
Landmarks: “Throwing Like A Girl: A Phenomenology Of Feminine Body Comportment, Motility, And Spatiality” And A Room Of One's Own Applied, Grace Benson
Crossings: Swarthmore Undergraduate Feminist Research Journal
This essay seeks to understand the author’s relationship to her body through theoretical feminist texts. It uses Iris Marion Young’s “Throwing Like a Girl: A Phenomenology of Feminine Body Comportment, Motility, and Spatiality,” Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own, and the author’s own life to examine the relationship between perception, queerness, and self-confidence. The account put forward here applies Young’s discussion of feminine bodily comportment and spatiality to the author’s experiences learning to fight and subsequently accept her own body. Tying Young’s comparison of the body to feminine existence to Woolf’s discussion of a room of one’s own, …
Multispecies Kinship In Fabrizio Terranova’S Haraway: Story Telling For Earthly Survival, Nicole Daly
Multispecies Kinship In Fabrizio Terranova’S Haraway: Story Telling For Earthly Survival, Nicole Daly
Crossings: Swarthmore Undergraduate Feminist Research Journal
This piece examines how director Fabrizio Terranova's 2016 documentary Haraway: Story Telling for Earthly Survival argues for embracing a framework of multispecies kinship between humans and non-human others. While telling the story of Haraway's life and her contributions to feminist scholarship, his documentary highlights various "contact zones" between humans and non-human animals in ways that destabilize the human/ non-human animal hierarchy and urge viewers to pay attention to the inevitability of non-human animal involvement in the process of becoming(-with). In my analysis of the film, I incorporate a variety of Haraway's works in addition to ideas from theorists of feminist …

Quotidian Black life is characterized by our ability to alchemize violence into generative life-sustaining properties of matter. In this paper, I will measure Black matter based on anything produced and engaged by Black collectives. While Black existence is not tied to white violence, descendants of enslaved Black people enter our worlds of worlds greeted by a white captor. It is not until we consciously recognize that we are in his dream that we can work to escape the white captor’s circadian rhythms. Through this paper, I will tease out the contradictions of our Black living-unliving. I will employ an anti-methodological …

Enrico Pea And The Awareness Of Never-Ending Detachment (Alexandria, Egypt 1896–1914), Stefano Giannini
Enrico Pea And The Awareness Of Never-Ending Detachment (Alexandria, Egypt 1896–1914), Stefano Giannini
Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship
This chapter analyzes the postcolonial discourse in Italy, through the voice of the novelist and playwright Enrico Pea (1881–1958). Living outside of Italy, Pea gained a unique awareness of the notion of multi-ethnic societies, of the concepts of nationality, borders, and boundaries. Alexandria, Egypt, is Pea’s referential space. It is a center, and at the same time, a marginal place. Alexandrea ad Egyptum, that is, the door to Egypt, as it was known in antiquity, this city brought together Arab and European artistic experiences that converged on, and were triggered by, its multicultural profile. The history of political exile …

Letter recognition plays an important role in reading and follows different phases of processing, from early visual feature detection to the access of abstract letter representations. Deaf ASL–English bilinguals experience orthography in two forms: English letters and fingerspelling. However, the neurobiological nature of fingerspelling representations, and the relationship between the two orthographies, remains unexplored. We examined the temporal dynamics of single English letter and ASL fingerspelling font processing in an unmasked priming paradigm with centrally presented targets for 200 ms preceded by 100 ms primes. Event-related brain potentials were recorded while participants performed a probe detection task. Experiment 1 examined …
The Blank White Paper As A Disobedient Object, Yiying Wu, Karthikeya Acharya
The Blank White Paper As A Disobedient Object, Yiying Wu, Karthikeya Acharya
Nordes Conference Series
On November 24, 2022, the White Paper Protests were started by Chinese people to protest against China’s strict zero-COVID policy and excessive censorship during the pandemic lockdown. In the protests, blank white papers were used as a means of protest. Framing the blank white paper as a ‘disobedient object’, our paper intends to capture a glimpse of the aesthetic composition of the protest movement. For this we collected responses from 42 Chinese citizens about their views of ‘white paper’. Based on the data, we interpret the aesthetic composition of the protest movement in three parts, ‘Blank Means:’, ‘Blank Fiction’ and …
Nothing About Us Without Us: The Journey Of Digital Accessibility In The Making, Luciana Terceiro
Nothing About Us Without Us: The Journey Of Digital Accessibility In The Making, Luciana Terceiro
Nordes Conference Series
This exploratory paper aims to discuss and reflect on digital accessibility practices in developing projects and products, focusing mainly on design activities. Digital accessibility is a characteristic of digital products and services like websites that allows people with disabilities to access and use them. Although its relevance, accessibility is not present in many technological objects. When tech practitioners and companies are asked why accessibility is not a priority, several reasons are mentioned, like costs and the available development time. What would lay below the most apparent arguments? What constitutes an organisational culture that leaves factors such as accessibility behind? The …
Missing Species: Discursive Design Activism, Margaret Rynning
Missing Species: Discursive Design Activism, Margaret Rynning
Nordes Conference Series
Through a design case, “Missing species”, this article presents how design activism can be applied to a discursive design project and proposes a model for discursive design activism. The case study addresses the issue of biodiversity and invading plants due to humans’ interaction with nature and suggests how design may inform and engage societies and individuals through critical imageries, possibly leading to local engagement. Design activism and presenting design outside of galleries and spaces for designers may lead to a larger and more targeted audience for discursive design.
Conversations With The Body Of The Other: A Three-Step Dialogical Process, Nesli Hazal Oktay, Danielle Wilde, Kristi Kuusk
Conversations With The Body Of The Other: A Three-Step Dialogical Process, Nesli Hazal Oktay, Danielle Wilde, Kristi Kuusk
Nordes Conference Series
Embodied design ideation methods rely on subjective —first-person— experiences of the designer to bring new ways of designing into being. Shifting the embodied design ideation method to the body of the other, we propose a three-step process that makes the experiences of a dancer accessible to a designer for the ideation of remote intimacies. To support the access to the dancer’s experiences, we facilitate embodied, dialogical exchange over three phases: i) observation of embodied explorations between the dancer and a set of tangibles, ii) analysis of phase (i) visual documentation, and iii) a semi-structured interview with the dancer, using phase …
Guiding Students To Become Better Designers And Co-Designers Of Inner Sustainability: A Framework For Higher Education, Kirsten Bonde Sørensen
Guiding Students To Become Better Designers And Co-Designers Of Inner Sustainability: A Framework For Higher Education, Kirsten Bonde Sørensen
Nordes Conference Series
The COVID-19 pandemic was a wake-up call for humanity. The resulting slowdown demanded existential reflection and a need to reframe industrial values related to the acceleration and growth logic of the capitalist economy. The pandemic and the blank space it produced have initiated radical changes to respond to both human and planetary health challenges. In response, this paper suggests a life-centered design framework that includes a life-centred design attitude and a 4- foci model aimed at inner and outer sustainability. The 4-foci model entails an inner focus, an outer focus, an outer praxis/ business focus and an outer planetary/world focus. …
The Illusive Type: Hunting Typographic Simulacra, Kyle Rath
The Illusive Type: Hunting Typographic Simulacra, Kyle Rath
Nordes Conference Series
Typically, when evaluating iconic typefaces, we investigate the degree to which they communicate well-established connotative narratives. Helvetica, for example, is an icon of simplicity and clarity and so, is applied across various designs to exude similar tones. Bodoni, a showpiece of Neoclassicism, detailing and adornment facilitated by technological advancement during the 18th century Industrial Revolution, often appears in designs suited to premium brands. Iconic typefaces such as these are tied to their symbolism; it appears that their symbolic ‘myths’ have ‘always been so.’ As I demonstrate however, there are examples of iconic typefaces whose myths are in fact entirely fabricated, …
Building A Pedagogy Of Idea Generation And Embodied Inquiry, Kate Joranson
Building A Pedagogy Of Idea Generation And Embodied Inquiry, Kate Joranson
Art History Pedagogy & Practice
What futures become possible when we center questions, inquiry, and affective responses in research processes? What does it mean to support encounters with new ideas? In this article, I explore non-extractive models of teaching and learning, sharing ways of making space for idea generation, an under-described part of research and creative practice. The coming-up-with-ideas part of creative and scholarly work can be challenging to articulate, share, and teach. What if we paused and stretched this part out, making it more visible? By browsing physical collections of books in community with one another, during “curated browsing” experiences, we give ourselves — …

style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">We are living through an information revolution connected with automated information processing and artificial intelligence. Previous information revolutions, connected with information agencies and information artifacts, resulted in cities—described by Jacques Ellul in style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">The Meaning of the City style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">as artificial and autonomous systems—and libraries, which augment human intelligence through technological systems as well as related formative practices. The library remains an important institution and infrastructure for confronting challenges and opportunities associated with the latest form artificial agency, AI. Stolen Votes And Silenced Voices: An Overturned Colorado Election And The Suppression Of Free Speech, David Hosansky
Stolen Votes And Silenced Voices: An Overturned Colorado Election And The Suppression Of Free Speech, David Hosansky
History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
Against the backdrop of violent labor disputes in Colorado’s mining districts, a pro-labor Democratic candidate in the 1904 gubernatorial race appeared to oust the Republican incumbent by 10,000 votes. But amid widespread allegations of fraud, Republicans used legal and political maneuvers to seize the governorship and establish control over the General Assembly, the state supreme court, and even local offices in the traditional Democratic strongholds of Denver. When U.S. Senator Thomas Patterson, a Colorado Democrat and publisher of two Denver newspapers, reacted with scathing commentary about the Colorado Supreme Court’s role in the takeover, the court fired back, fining Patterson …

Proceedings Of Nordes 2023: This Space Intentionally Left [Blank], Vanessa Rodrigues, Carl Westin, Stefan Holmlid
DRS Conference Volumes
This volume is the proceedings of the 10th biennial Nordes conference, hosted by Linköping University, 12 – 14 June 2023. All contributions relate in different ways to the overall theme, ‘This Space Intentionally Left [Blank]’.
A blank space—a silence, pause, interstice, gap, in-between, opening, punctuation, negative space—can be deliberately or incidentally devoid of content. A space left blank is as much an invitation to notice the void and the structure that surrounds it, as it is a question as to why and how they are per- ceived. Such absence can remind us to seek out conscious or unconscious intentions hidden …
