19th-Century Medical Saddlebag: An Analysis Of The Contents And A Conservation Treatment, Lorna J. Brundrett Sep 2023

19th-Century Medical Saddlebag: An Analysis Of The Contents And A Conservation Treatment, Lorna J. Brundrett

Art Conservation Master's Projects

The medicinal contents found within a mid-1800’s saddlebag were investigated using multimodal imaging techniques, micro-transmission Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (transFTIR), pyrolysis Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy (pyGCMS), X- Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF), Raman Spectroscopy and the reference collection of the SUNY Buffalo State Eckert Herbarium. Housed within glass vials and paper packets, the medicinal samples from seventeen different containers were analyzed and their results compared with historical references. Medicines with probable identification were found to be of both mineral and botanical origins: mercurous chloride, lead acetate, magnesium carbonate, iron oxides, gum arabic, ground croton seeds, benzoin resin, Fabaceae senna and Arctostaphylos …

Nassau Hall Stair: The Analysis And Conservation Treatment Of A Gelatin Silver Dop Photograph, Emily J. Mercer

Art Conservation Master's Projects

Nassau Hall Stair by photographer Elizabeth G.C. Menzies, was brought into the Buffalo State College’s Garman Art Conservation Department for examination and treatment. Conservation imaging was utilized during examination and documentation. Nassau Hall Stair was attached to a window mat which was found to be significant due to graphite and ink inscriptions. The photograph exhibited puncture-like damage and undulations while the window mat showed similar undulations and brown tidelines. Nassau Hall Stair was identified as a gelatin silver developed-out-paper (DOP) print with X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF) and went through a series of solvent and aqueous baths which reduced tape adhesive …

The St. Patrick Lithograph: Research, Analysis, And Treatment Of A Nineteenth-Century Print, Meredith French Sep 2023

The St. Patrick Lithograph: Research, Analysis, And Treatment Of A Nineteenth-Century Print, Meredith French

Art Conservation Master's Projects

Lithographs featuring religious subject matter were not uncommon in nineteenth-century America. The print that is the focus of this research, however, is an unconventional depiction of St. Patrick from that historical period. Research into the development of lithography in Europe and its spread in the United States, as well as American lithography houses, technology, and materials helped to explain the historical context of this print. This study revealed that the object is likely influenced by the work of Currier & Ives, as well as other American and European lithographic firms. Multimodal photographic examination and analytical techniques including X- ray fluorescence …

A Lifetime Of Stress: Analysis And Treatment Of An Inlaid Chinese Box, Katherine Mcfarlin Sep 2023

A Lifetime Of Stress: Analysis And Treatment Of An Inlaid Chinese Box, Katherine Mcfarlin

Art Conservation Master's Projects

Inlaid wooden objects are complex and intricate mixed media assemblages that can provide significant challenges to the conservator, as the properties of the individual materials can conflict and complicate treatment options. For example, traditional inlay materials such as ivory and mother-of-pearl are particularly susceptible to shifts in moisture and acidity, and the hygroscopic nature of historic proteinaceous adhesives can exacerbate dimensional changes in the surrounding wood. This paper describes the research and subsequent treatment to stabilize and restore a Qing dynasty wooden tabletop chest inlaid with ivory, mother-of-pearl, and various siliceous minerals. A combination of adhesive failure along multiple joints …

Ambivalent Scales: Methods For Reading Scenes Of Sexual Violation, Natalie Ruby Sep 2023

Ambivalent Scales: Methods For Reading Scenes Of Sexual Violation, Natalie Ruby

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The importance of unveiling rape in the #MeToo era has unintentionally obscured encounters that lack the clarity of “yes” or “no.” However, desire can be ambiguous even in unambiguous cases of assault. Feminist activists and scholars have started to address ambiguity by arguing for a new epistemology of rape, what Linda Alcoff calls “grey rape.” In this thesis, I interrogate the “grey” embedded in ordinary sexual encounters by looking at ambivalence as an example of everyday desire evident across the seduction plot and the novel tradition. Rather than seeking to make consent more inclusive to oppressed groups, I read between …

“No Place Is So Dear To My Childhood”: Evangelicalism, Nostalgia, And The History Of An American Hymn, Christopher D. Cantwell Sep 2023

“No Place Is So Dear To My Childhood”: Evangelicalism, Nostalgia, And The History Of An American Hymn, Christopher D. Cantwell

History: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article tracks the surprising history of a love ballad about a lost sweetheart that went on to become a celebrated gospel hymn about the rural roots of America's greatness. Titled “The Little Brown Church,” but sometimes called “The Church in the Wildwood,” the song's evolution speaks to the ways in which nostalgia became central to the social and religious imagination of those American Protestants call themselves “evangelicals.” Though it first appeared in college songbooks after its publication in 1865, “The Little Brown Church” eventually became a favorite of evangelists, revivalists, and other gospel singers at the dawn of the …

Orthodoxy In The Face Of Contemporary Challenges: The Ukrainian Context, Olena Predko, Ihor Maksymenko Sep 2023

Orthodoxy In The Face Of Contemporary Challenges: The Ukrainian Context, Olena Predko, Ihor Maksymenko

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The article explores Orthodoxy in Ukraine as represented by the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. It also highlights the equivocal position of Filaret (Denysenko), who previously represented the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate and continues to attempt to influence the country's Orthodox configuration. Despite the inherently anti-war rhetoric espoused by the leaders of the Orthodox Churches, who view war as a manifestation of evil and violence, they each harbor unique motivations that shape their respective stances on the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war. On one hand, their argumentation often relies on ethical principles derived from canonical …

Take Back The Power: The Fall And Rise And Fall Of New York City's Transport Workers Union Local 100, 1975–2009, Marc Kagan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Take Back the Power: The Fall and Rise and Fall of Transport Workers Union Local 100, 1975-2009 tracks the history of this strategically significant union from the onset of New York City’s fiscal crisis in 1975 to the end, in 2009, of a second attempt to free transit workers from the grip of neoliberal economic austerity.

The first effort began in 1978 and culminated with the eleven-day 1980 transit strike, initiated by union dissidents over the opposition of the union president, but abruptly ended by him before a decisive victory could be won. That president, and his successors, reconciled themselves …

Publishing The Pan-Jewish: The First Hebrew Newspaper And Its Modernities, Philip E. Keisman Sep 2023

Publishing The Pan-Jewish: The First Hebrew Newspaper And Its Modernities, Philip E. Keisman

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Publishing the Pan-Jewish emerges from a question about sites of synthesis between claims of sacred continuity and novel forms of communication. It centers on the first ten years of Hamagid (1856-1866), acknowledged within the historiography as history’s first Hebrew-language newspaper. Eliezer Lipman Silberman, an Orthodox butcher founded Hamagid in East Prussia as a bulwark of his vision of traditional Judaism. The first chapter of this dissertation examines the formal elements of the newspaper as a medium, demonstrating the myriad ways in which it presented novel experiences for its reading public. Chapter two narrates an untold history of the newspaper’s early …

“I Passed First-Year Writing—What Now?” Adapting Strategies From First-Year Writing To Writing In The Disciplines, Amy T. Cicchino Sep 2023

“I Passed First-Year Writing—What Now?” Adapting Strategies From First-Year Writing To Writing In The Disciplines, Amy T. Cicchino

Publications

This chapter foreshadows challenges you can experience as you adapt your writing beyond your first-year writing course to become a writer in your discipline.1 The essay contains a student scenario, defines key rhetorical concepts within discipline-specific writing situations, and gives you strategies for adapting these rhetorical concepts to new writing situations. After reading this chapter, you will better understand how the concepts introduced in first-year writing connect to the writing you will encounter in your upper-level, disciplinary courses and identify strategies that will help you intentionally adapt writing knowledge to new discipline-specific contexts.

The Poetry Of Abstraction: Mental Objects, Private And Public, In Post-Reformation England, Esei Mace Murakishi Sep 2023

The Poetry Of Abstraction: Mental Objects, Private And Public, In Post-Reformation England, Esei Mace Murakishi

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, certain English poets concerned themselves with the creation and manipulation of abstractions—objects that stand in the mind only. This dissertation examines: the “idea” that, on Philip Sidney’s account, a poem is; binary patterns realized in weak and strong syllables, meter and rhythm, as conceived and employed by Sidney and Edmund Spenser; and dramatis personae, the quasi-human beings whose status is among William Shakespeare’s subjects in The Winter’s Tale. I allege that the Word of God—as it had been described by the Protestant reformers and, preeminently, by William Tyndale—was prototypical of the poets’ abstractions. Tyndale …

Les Trésors De La Maison, Or L’Amour Maternel: The Technical Study And Treatment Of Previously-Restored Painting, Katherine C. Aguirre Sep 2023

Les Trésors De La Maison, Or L’Amour Maternel: The Technical Study And Treatment Of Previously-Restored Painting, Katherine C. Aguirre

Art Conservation Master's Projects

“Mother and Children” is a painting belonging to the collection of the Garman Art Conservation Program at SUNY Buffalo State College. The painting depicts a seated woman with light skin and dark hair and two children. The painting was damaged in the past, and the image was obscured by thick layers of grime and oxidized varnish. It had also been previously treated on at least two occasions. A full technical analysis and conservation treatment was completed. The methods of analysis included multi-modal imaging, x-radiography, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, and cross-sectional analysis. The goal of the analysis was …

Straight Out-Of-The-Tube: Analysis And Conservation Of George Mathieu’S Pour Une Aliénation Définitive Du Logos, Christy H. Mccutchen Sep 2023

Straight Out-Of-The-Tube: Analysis And Conservation Of George Mathieu’S Pour Une Aliénation Définitive Du Logos, Christy H. Mccutchen

Art Conservation Master's Projects

Pour une aliénation définitive du logos (96.5 cm × 195.6 cm, Buffalo AKG Art Museum, Acc.1971:7), painted in 1955 by French artist Georges Mathieu (1921-2012) is an iconic example of Lyrical Abstraction. Mathieu launched this European counterpart to Abstract Expressionism in the post-war upheaval of 1947. His unorthodox methods present a unique combination of aesthetic concerns and intrinsic material instability. Mathieu’s technique involved squeezing oil paints out-of-the-tube directly onto his canvas with rapid and spontaneous calligraphic motions. The primary condition issue for Pour une aliénation définitive du logos was the failing adhesion between this thickly applied paint and the primed …

Working With Deaf Children In Healthcare Settings, Maria E. Lombardi Sep 2023

Working With Deaf Children In Healthcare Settings, Maria E. Lombardi

JADARA

Effective and efficient health care is greatly influenced by communication between patient and provider. Federal laws require the use of a sign language interpreter (SLI) or other appropriate accommodations to ensure effective communication within the health care system for deaf children. Specialized training and certifications are available for SLIs choosing to specialize in the health care field. The training is typically geared toward SLIs working with adults rather than children. In addition, very few studies focus on the use of SLIs for children within health care settings. SLIs bring unique perspectives to their respective settings when referencing one’s skill set. …

Chinese Visions Of Self And Other: The International Politics Of Noses, William A. Callahan Sep 2023

Chinese Visions Of Self And Other: The International Politics Of Noses, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

How does China view the world? While much has been written about how China's international relations are best seen as intercultural relations that do not exclude the Other, this article examines how self/Other relations are visualized in terms of the human face in China, in particular through iconic images that construct the Chinese self with and against foreigners with large noses. It employs interpretivist methods to consider the interplay of social relations and international relations in order to see how ‘external appearance’ and ‘external relations’ inform each other in Chinese theory and practice. It mobilizes the classical Chinese concept ‘deep-set …

Faith-Based Fissures Take Many Forms, Lily Kong Sep 2023

Faith-Based Fissures Take Many Forms, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In a commentary, SMU President Professor Lily Kong discussed why religion continues to be a source of contestation over space the world over. She noted that it is important to recognise that conflicts and contestations do not just occur between religions, or between the religious and the secular, but within religions as well, and called for religious leaders to be mindful of the dynamics within their organisations and to consider how to manage potential tensions and conflicts.

From Thermopylae To Leuctra: The Evolution Of The Spartan Military Ethos, Evan M. Smith Sep 2023

From Thermopylae To Leuctra: The Evolution Of The Spartan Military Ethos, Evan M. Smith

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This paper examines the transformation of the Spartan military tradition from the Persian Wars to the Theban Ascendency. The Battle of Thermopylae marked the height of the Spartan military ethos. However, the strain of their military culture forced the Spartans to dilute their old mores over time. Their old cultural and military practices became unsustainable as military innovation increased. The Battle of Sphacteria clearly illustrated the deterioration of Spartan military ethos and the need for innovation. Straddling the line between tradition and innovation, Spartan military ethos received its death blow at the Battle of Leuctra.
