Two Cardinal Portraits By Scipione Pulzone In The Harvard Art Museums And Their Related Versions, Danielle Carrabino
Two Cardinal Portraits By Scipione Pulzone In The Harvard Art Museums And Their Related Versions, Danielle Carrabino
Museum of Art: Books
Book abstract:
The visual legacy of early modern cardinals constitutes a vast and extremely rich body of artworks, many of superb quality, in a variety of media, often by well-known artists and skilled craftsmen. Yet cardinal portraits have primarily been analyzed within biographical studies of the represented individual, in relation to the artists who created them, or within the broader genre of portraiture. Portrait Cultures of the Early Modern Cardinal addresses questions surrounding the production, collection, and status of the cardinal portrait, covering diverse geographies and varied media. Examining the development of cardinals' imagery in terms of their multi-layered identities, …

Satire In Swift And Voltaire: Towards A Humanist Dialectic, Ola Kittaneh, Fuad Abdul Muttaleb
Satire In Swift And Voltaire: Towards A Humanist Dialectic, Ola Kittaneh, Fuad Abdul Muttaleb
An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)
This article examines how the Enlightenment writers Jonathan Swift and Voltaire’s attitudes and works resonate with our modern writers’ concepts on the role of the humanist intellectual. Informed by Edward Said’s recent theoretical concepts on the humanist intellectual, the article compares the way the two writers use the power of satire to achieve a humanist end that focuses on the pitfalls of identitarian thinking which often leads to national or religious fanaticism. There is certainly a need for Swift and Voltaire to be repositioned in relation with the broad contours of modern writers’ notions of the intellectual. By reading the …

Grameen Method Of Microfinance As A Poverty-Alleviation Tool: Short And Long-Term Effects On Women’S Empowerment In Egypt, Zeina M. Shalaby
Grameen Method Of Microfinance As A Poverty-Alleviation Tool: Short And Long-Term Effects On Women’S Empowerment In Egypt, Zeina M. Shalaby
The Undergraduate Research Journal
Many people suffer from poverty globally, and economic tools used to combat it have varied from one country to another with some enacting noticeable change. The topic of micro-credit attracted attention after the Grameen Bank’s microfinance method was recognized for decreasing poverty in rural Bangladesh by granting loans to women almost exclusively. This paper explores the application of the Grameen method of microfinance in Egypt by reviewing the specific conditions surrounding women’s poverty in Egypt and the economic and social outcomes of past Grameen microfinance efforts in Egypt. While the Grameen method of microfinance successfully improved well-being indicators and economic …

Narrating Egyptian Women’S Prison Experiences - El Saadawi And Bakr, Nour El Captan
The Undergraduate Research Journal
The research attempts to discover what Egyptian women prisoners’ experience was like in the 1980s and 90s through studying two major texts which fall under the genre of prison literature: Twelve Women in a Cell by Nawal El Saadawi and The Golden Chariot by Salwa Bakr. Through a thorough reading and analysis of the works, similar tropes and different attitudes can be found in the texts. Both works discussed class, comradery, and the patriarchy but differences exist when it comes to their different portrayals of prison.
A Forgotten Woman Writer: Representations Of Women In Faridah Ahmad’S Creative Writings, Sylvia Azmy
A Forgotten Woman Writer: Representations Of Women In Faridah Ahmad’S Creative Writings, Sylvia Azmy
The Undergraduate Research Journal
In her creative writings Farida Ahmad (1939-2018), an Egyptian woman writer and journalist excluded from the Arabic literary canon, subtly presents a different narrative about the leftist movement in the seventies and eighties. This research argues that Ahmad’s works, which present that women’s liberation and nation’s liberation are different, faced structural marginalization. She presents that in her novella, Akhāfu ʻalayka Minnī, using the relationship dynamics between two intellectual leftist activists, Mustafa and Nadia. Mustafa marginalizes Nadia from the political sphere through his patronizing attitude. Moreover, he utilizes the sexual (nation) liberation rhetoric and conservative rhetoric to convince Nadia to be …
Is Nietzscheanism An Extension Of Kant’S Moral Philosophy? A Nietzschean-Kantian Dialectic For Morality, Sami Shaheen
Is Nietzscheanism An Extension Of Kant’S Moral Philosophy? A Nietzschean-Kantian Dialectic For Morality, Sami Shaheen
The Undergraduate Research Journal
In contrast to mainstream philosophy, this paper argues that Nietzsche’s philosophy allies itself with Kantian thought despite his explicit resentment towards Kant’s emphasis on metaphysical interpretations of morals. Although Nietzsche’s criticisms towards Kantian philosophy are motivated by his attempts to originally as well as creatively distinguish his thought towards morality from Kant’s metaphysical assertions, it could be argued that Nietzsche’s fear from the advent of nihilism requires a transcendentalist framework to regain value for existentialist concerns. The first section of this paper will argue that Nietzsche’s claims against Kant are nothing more than a broader concealment of Nietzsche’s admiration for …

John W. "Bud" Fowler In Colorado, California, And Ohio, Mark E. Eberle
Monographs
John W. Jackson Jr., better known as John W. “Bud” Fowler (1858–1913), was a Black baseball player, captain, manager, umpire, and promoter. His baseball career spanned at least 33 years, from 1877 to 1909. In 1878, Fowler became the first known Black baseball player in the major or minor leagues, and he went on to play for a total of 18 minor league clubs with rosters composed predominantly of white ballplayers during the era of racial segregation. He played for numerous teams from New England to southern California and from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. Consequently, he …

“‘Normal Is What We Make It, Right?’ Ordinary Aesthetics And Uncanny Twists In Contemporary Tv Series.", Jeroen Gerrits
Comparative Literature Faculty and Student Scholarship
Contemporary TV shows, characterized by their complex narrative form, are designed to reveal the simple. They enable characters and viewers alike to discover the ordinary by coupling the everyday to an underworld populated by criminals, demons, vampires, and other kinds of “lowlifes.” I will argue here that the structure of the Möbius strip, or Escher twist, draws a particular aesthetic appeal at the intersection of these worlds. I call these twists uncanny in the Cavellian sense that the underworld, looking strangely familiar, has the capacity of making the ordinary look unfamiliar, inherently strange, and unstable. Rather than allowing us to …
Transhuman Bodies: A Survey Of Three Avenues Of Societal Critique From Literature With Cyborg, Android, And Clone Subjects, Wesley Sanders
Transhuman Bodies: A Survey Of Three Avenues Of Societal Critique From Literature With Cyborg, Android, And Clone Subjects, Wesley Sanders
Student Theses and Dissertations
This thesis seeks to explore three different avenues of societal critique using works in Science Fiction which have as their subjects cyborgs, androids, or clones. In the thesis, I begin by addressing the unique way SF literature comments on gender politics through the use of objectified cyborgs and androids, typically with male creators and would be male masters. Following this, I explore the concept of a semiotic liminality surrounding cyborgs and androids and illustrate how that liminality complicates conceptions of what constitutes a living creature. Finally, the thesis shifts to the commodification of the cyborg where I attempt to illustrate …

Incompatibilist Arguments And Compatibilist Rebuttals, Wai Sing Fook
Incompatibilist Arguments And Compatibilist Rebuttals, Wai Sing Fook
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
The issue concerning the compatibility between free will and determinism has long been a hotly debated topic in philosophy. The debate matters because free will is believed to be intimately related to moral responsibility. My research aims at providing a picture of the landscape of one philosophical position on this debate --- incompatibilism. Incompatibilism is the doctrine that claims free will and moral responsibility are incompatible with determinism. A major part of this thesis is a critical survey of three of the most influential (types of) arguments for incompatibilism; they are the Consequence Argument, the Transfer of Nonresponsibility Argument, and …

The Library Wants To Kill You: Places Of Information As Battleground And Sanctum In Halo, Mackenzie Streissguth
The Library Wants To Kill You: Places Of Information As Battleground And Sanctum In Halo, Mackenzie Streissguth
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Video games are often a widespread access point for studying information-seeking behaviors, as a large portion of the population (and its youth) play them. Understanding how real-world analogues, like libraries, are portrayed in games can give us insights into how they mirror conflicts of reality. By examining the depictions of information systems and accompanying curators in Halo: Combat Evolved (2001), we can begin to investigate the perceptions of libraries and their antagonism in ludonarratives. Resulting analysis reveals multiple layers of archival hostility that are ultimately upended in later iterations in the game series, changing the nature of the library itself. …

Data Lost, Forbidden Or Controlled?: The Archivists Of Horizon Forbidden West, Ashley Lanni
Proceedings from the Document Academy
This paper discusses the archival and information usage practices of characters within the 2022 video game Horizon Forbidden West. It considers how science fiction settings, particularly those based in post-apocalyptic futures with different technology and information practices, can help us reflect on how contemporary society interacts with information and determines its use. Furthermore, the paper explores the social responsibility informational professionals have toward the world around them through contrasting various groups and characters within the game, positing that the main group's actions are the most morally lauded within the game's narrative.

"I’M Mixing Comic Book Canon And Mcu Canon To Suit My Own Needs": Information Sharing As Community Building In A Fandom In Flux, Alison Harding
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Utilizing the rapidly changing landscape of the Marvel fandom on fanfiction archive Archive of Our Own (AO3) as a research site, this paper presents the findings of a combined autoethnography and digital ethnography of the Falcon and the Winter Soldier community. The work explores the ways in which a fandom community builds itself through information sharing. While the study garnered many findings, this paper primarily focuses on how tags are vital to crafting community identity, while also creating barriers to entry within the Falcon and the Winter Soldier fandom.
The results show that while the broader Marvel fandom can be …
