National Elements In The Poetry Of Guatemala, Grace Nichols May 1951

National Elements In The Poetry Of Guatemala, Grace Nichols

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Throughout the history of Guatemala, poetry has been a constant outlet for the spirit of the land. Guatemalan writers share the Latin Americans' inclination toward expression in verse which has been called the "enfermedad latinoamericana." Rare is the educated Guatemalan who at least in his youth has not contributed his quota of verse. Guatemalan poetic proclivity is the more apparent when one considers that the poetry of that land has been produced by only a small part of the population since the non-contributing indigenous peoples form the majority of the three million inhabitants.

A Study Of The Legend And Cult Of The Boy Martyr, Saint William Of Norwich, Helen B. Scrivner May 1951

A Study Of The Legend And Cult Of The Boy Martyr, Saint William Of Norwich, Helen B. Scrivner

History ETDs

For some years following the death of Saint William the cult flourished and many people came to the tomb of the boy saint to worship and seek miraculous help. It is the aim of this study to follow the diffusion of the story and its impression on those who it reached. We will plot the geographical range of the cult for the twenty-eight years covered by the chronicle. We will also consider other historical evidence of the story having reached localities not mentioned in the narrative. We will suggest ways that the information may have been carried. Besides following the …

Tourism In New Mexico: The Promotional Activities Of The New Mexico State Tourist Bureau, 1935-1950., Mary Irene Severns May 1951

Tourism In New Mexico: The Promotional Activities Of The New Mexico State Tourist Bureau, 1935-1950., Mary Irene Severns

History ETDs

The growth of the tourist business has been a stimulus to social and economic life in New Mexico. Tourist attractions are natural to the state, yet except for upkeep and preservation, tourism does not have to be cultivated to any great extent with high capital expenditures to produce results. The very attractions which please the tourist may become a permanent source of pleasure to the people of New Mexico. Few residents of the state do not profit in some way, either directly or indirectly, from the tourists.

An Analysis And Interpretation Of The Structural Elements In Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Archie Bussell May 1951

An Analysis And Interpretation Of The Structural Elements In Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Archie Bussell

English Language and Literature ETDs

Very much and very excellent and scholarly work has been accomplished in the field of Chaucerian criticism; but this criticism, in the main, has been in such fields as technique and interpretation of Chaucer's poetry, Chaucer's pilgrims, tale-order, in the structure and explication of the original tales, and in special studies like the "Marriage Group" or "preestes.thre." It should be said in the beginning that this study does not pretend to throw any light upon such problems as have already been thoroughly investigated. My approach is to examine the structural elements between and among the tales which bind the tales …

Fernando Ortiz, Cuban Intellectual, Lorenzo B. Sanchez May 1951

Fernando Ortiz, Cuban Intellectual, Lorenzo B. Sanchez

Latin American Studies ETDs

Although of all the Latin American states, the insular republic of Cuba has maintained the closest contact with the United States, there is nevertheless one aspect of that country's culture of which we have but little understanding. This aspect is the penetrating influence that the Negro has on Cuba's cultural development. Until recently even the white population of Cuba did not fully recognize the role that the Negro had played and is playing in its culture. Cultural traits that revealed definite Negro influence were frequently attributed to aboriginal sources, or their origin was politically ignored or treated with indifference. This …
