The World Council Of Churches: A Theological Appraisal, F. E. Mayer, Richard Z. Meyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Throughout the history of the divided Church there have been earnest efforts to reunite the separated communions. The impetus for such a reunion usually was strongest in a period either of prosperity or of opposition. At the beginning of the nineteenth century the Church experienced an era of revivalism and expansion, and shortly the former confessional boundaries were ignored, and in spite of divergent doctrinal views denominations united in organizing the several national Bible Societies and large Missionary Associations. When shortly afterwards a wave of secularism swept over the world, the various communions again set aside their confessional differences and …

The Confirmation Instruction Of Children, Harold Dorn Mar 1953

The Confirmation Instruction Of Children, Harold Dorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

Purpose. We are all interested in improving our confirmation instruction. It was thought that one of the most practical ideas to find out how we might improve our individual techniques would be to make a survey of what our brethren were doing in the field. Such a study would indicate what materials and procedures were in use, our principal difficulties, and such matters that needed special study. The study might also point up new ideas and trends.

The Origin Of The Utah State Agricultural College, Joel E. Ricks Mar 1953

The Origin Of The Utah State Agricultural College, Joel E. Ricks

Joel Ricks Collection

In 1888, Representative Anthon H. Lund of Sanpete County introduced the bill to create a college in Utah. The idea of education for the people of rural Utah came to him while he was on a mission to Denmark. July 29, 1889 upon the sagebrush and wild grass-covered bench of Old Lake Bonneville, high enough above the valley to provide a marvelous view, the founders laid the cornerstone of a building to be used for the education of western democracy - a rural college for the masses.

The Metaphorical Image In The Poetic Tragedy Of Federico García Lorca, Jack Edward Tomlins Mar 1953

The Metaphorical Image In The Poetic Tragedy Of Federico García Lorca, Jack Edward Tomlins

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Admittedly, to present another study on Lorca appears at first to be a futile task. Critics in Spain, Latin America, England, and the United States have in no way allowed the poet to fall into oblivion; quite the contrary, in numberless articles and critical analyses, Lorca has been praised, applauded, and very nearly deified--often by those who obviously were striving to make political capital of his untimely death. This voluminous output of Lorquian criticism--which is many times composed on an elegiac note and based on high-sounding generalities--prompts the present investigation. This study will explore the reputation which Lorca has earned …

Television And Government, Julie Richards Mar 1953

Television And Government, Julie Richards

Student Scholarship

Television and Government explores the rapid evolution of television in the United States and the intricate regulatory relationship between the industry and the federal government. Writing at a pivotal moment in broadcast history, Richards argues that television is destined to be the dominant medium of mass communication and a powerful democratic force, combining the immediacy of radio with the visual appeal of motion pictures.

The paper provides a detailed overview of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), established by the Communications Act of 1934 to manage the public domain of the electromagnetic spectrum. It examines the complex administrative and quasi-judicial functions …

Puritan Opinion In The House Of Commons, Jacquelyn Cheney Mar 1953

Puritan Opinion In The House Of Commons, Jacquelyn Cheney

Student Scholarship

The religious and political landscape of early seventeenth-century England was defined by the evolving friction between the Stuart monarchy and a growing Puritan faction within the House of Commons. While the English Reformation under the Tudors was primarily a political schism rather than a doctrinal one, it left a legacy of religious unsettledness that Elizabeth I managed through political expediency. By the time James I ascended the throne in 1603, the Puritan movement had transitioned from a purely religious group seeking to purify Anglican ritual into a sophisticated political force. This transformation was solidified through a strategic alliance with common …
