For years the writer has been very interested in the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His work as a teacher, employed by the LDS department of education, has been with the youth of the church. His teaching experience has taken him through a chronological consideration or sequence of events of the church from its origin down to the present. However, the absence of historical data during the period of 1846-1852 grew into a problem in the writer's mind. Tonal Balance Within The Concert Band: An Objective Approach To Augment Subjective Theories, John L. Evenson

The school band has become one of the foremost means of evaluating the program of music education in the public school. Although a school music program has many assets which cannot possibly be made articulate to the administration, school board, and public through a performing unit such as the concert band, the music educator is under pressure to produce fine results in his performing unit, and should strive to make every appearance of the group as musically perfect as possible. Good tonal balance is essential in obtaining this result.

Since the introduction of instrumental music into the public schools there has been a noticeable lack of suitable literature for the beginner at the elementary level in class-type instruction, especially for those groups in which miscellaneous instruments are included and where the players possess a wide range of abilities. Further, the difference in rate of learning among children and the relatively small amount of time which one may justifiably devote to such group serves only to point up the need for music literature arranged and designed especially for the beginning player at the elementary level. The proposed elementary string class method embraces the following classical instruments: the violin, viola, violoncello (cello) and double bass (string bass, contrabass or bass). An elementary class may consist of any group of grade school or junior high students, or any group of beginners. The Q approach recommended may also be called the white key (piano terminology) or natural scale approach. This system may be better understood by a study of the discussion to follow.

With the rapid expansion of instrumental music in both the secondary schools and colleges of this country, there arises a need for more good literature to serve as training material for the smaller groups of the instrumental music programs. In the past, there has been a certain amount of music transcribed for ensemble groups, but a great deal of this transcribing has been done on a commercial basis without an accompanying systematic study of style.
