The purpose of this study is to give the story of the first twenty-five years of Webb City, Missouri, "The Town That Jack Built," and the background for the formation of this typical midwestern mining town. The material for this study has been collected from libraries, histories, newspapers, photograph collections, scrapbooks and other souvenirs treasured over the years, and personal interviews with formerly prominent mining men and descendants of the early settlers.

Graham Greene did not receive serious critical attention as a novelist until the publication of Brighton Rock in 1938. Even then, because he chose to subtitle it an "entertainment" many critics refused to consider it a serious novel at all, although it treats of evil working through a boy. Anyone who reads Brighton Rock immediately after "entertainments" such as A Gun for Sale or The Ministry of Fear cannot help noticing a deepening awareness of values in the author.
