Theological Issues At Evanston, F. E. Mayer
Theological Issues At Evanston, F. E. Mayer
Concordia Theological Monthly
The second assembly of the World Council of Churches will be held at Evanston, Ill., August 15-31, 1954. The 161 member churches will be represented by 600 official delegates, 600 accredited visitors, 150 theological consultants, 120 youth consultants, fraternal delegates, and official observers from nonmember churches. The Christian world is vitally interested in the Evanston assembly, because the chief concern of this gathering will be to agree on the "Christian message" which the member churches of the W. C. C. will proclaim to the world. This message comprises a main theme and six subthemes, which will receive intensive study in …

A History Of Hat Creek Presbyterian Church, 1742-1953, Sydnor Franklin Foster
A History Of Hat Creek Presbyterian Church, 1742-1953, Sydnor Franklin Foster
Master's Theses
All the records of the early history of Hat Creek were destroyed in a very unfortunate fire in 1854. The first two volumes of the present records are kept in storage at the Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. The third volume, covering the period from 1902 to 194o, will probably be sent there for safe storage in the very near future. Em ploying every available source, the writer has attempted to give a chronological account of the events surrounding Hat Creek from ifs founding in 1742, through the end of 1953.
A History Of Virginia In The Spanish-American War, Virginia Rowe Christian
A History Of Virginia In The Spanish-American War, Virginia Rowe Christian
Master's Theses
Half a century ago, on February 15,1898, the United States Battleship Maine was destroyed by a mysterious explosion as she lay peacefully at moorings in Havana Harbor. At the time, the sympathy of the United States citizens lay strongly with revolutionists in Cuba who were then attempting to secure their freedom from the galling yoke of Spanish rule. The episode of the Maine gave added impetus to the trend which was inevitably drawing the United States and Spain into a state of war and the final breach occurred on April 19,1898, when the United States government recognized the independence of …
A Study Of Tennyson's Historical Trilogy, Robert Caudius Markham
A Study Of Tennyson's Historical Trilogy, Robert Caudius Markham
Master's Theses
Although Alfred Tennyson ls not one of the great dramatists of English Literature. I feel that a study of his historic trilogy is worthwhile and beneficial. Probably we shall never understand completely the mystery of his turning to the form of the drama at the age of sixty-five. We can, however, recognize his growth and development in this field of literature and perceive hie political fervor and religious opinion from the trilogy.
The purpose of this work is to present a study of Tennyson's trilogy demonstrating the degree of dramatic development he achieved.
A Study Of The Mysticism Of Plotinus And Augustine, R. Baine Harris
A Study Of The Mysticism Of Plotinus And Augustine, R. Baine Harris
Master's Theses
Three major subjects are the concern of this study: Mysticism, Plotinus, and St. Augustine, any one of which would allow elaborate investigation. Here, we have made no attempt to deal with any one of these comprehensively, but have been concerned only to make a comparative analysis of the mysticisms of Plotinus and Augustine.
The writer's interest in Plotinus stems from the fact that Plotinus is both a first-rate philosopher and a mystic, being generally regarded as "the father of Western mysticism." The significance of Augustine in the history of Western Civilization and the fact that he is both a convert …
A Study Of Chaucer's Influence On English Literature Through Dryden, Elder Blair Apperson
A Study Of Chaucer's Influence On English Literature Through Dryden, Elder Blair Apperson
Master's Theses
Geoffrey Chaucer is one of the greatest poets of our English literature. If Shakespeare stands apart as our greatest, then it is John Milton who must dispute with Chaucer the honor of second place. Milton undoubtedly surpasses Chaucer in the grandeur of his imagination and the sublimity or his poetic style; but "he cannot equal him in the range and variety of his art." On one hand we have Chaucer, the grave and serious poet.always keenly conscious that "our human life is a shifting quicksand of mutability, that lasting happiness can never be our earthly portion;" whereas we have but …
A History Of The Chesapeake Bay Ferries To Virginia's Eastern Shore Prior To The Civil War, Clarence Lee Beebe
A History Of The Chesapeake Bay Ferries To Virginia's Eastern Shore Prior To The Civil War, Clarence Lee Beebe
Master's Theses
The decision of the Pennsylvania Railroad Authorities to abandon the ferry service of the Elisha Lee, prior to the boats annual inspection by the United States Coast Guard in March, 1953, created a bit of excitement on the part of the Eastern Shore Inhabitants. This ferry service connected the Shore with Old Point Comfort and Norfolk, Virginia. The ferry made two trips a day across the Bay, carrying the mail, freight, cars, and passengers.
