"It is a gloomy moment in history. Not for many years, not in fact in the lifetime of most men who are here, has there been so much grave and deep apprehension; never has the future seemed so incalculable as at this time. In France, the political cauldron seethes and bubbles with uncertainty; Russia hangs, as usual, a cloud, dark and silent, upon the horizon of Europe; while all the energies, resources, and the influences of the British Empire are sorely tried and are yet to be tried more sorely. It is a solemn moment, and no man can feel …

Barth's Conception Of The Authority Of The Bible, Thomas Coates
Barth's Conception Of The Authority Of The Bible, Thomas Coates
Concordia Theological Monthly
The Barthian theology has often been defined as a "theology of the Word of God." The Word of God is indeed central in Barth's theological system, and to understand his conception of the Word of God is to hold the key which opens the door to all his theological thinking. Is this conception something new in the realm of Christian thought, or is it merely a rcpristination of the Reformation doctrine? Does the Barthian doctrine remain within the mainstream of the Christian tradition, or does it meander off into the slough of a new and disguised rationalism and empty itself …

The Social And Political Conflict In Prussia 1858-1864, Eugene N. Anderson
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
T HE present study developed out of a desire to understand the character of liberalism and conservatism in Prussia on the eve of German unification. Who were the liberals? Who were the Conservatives? What were their ideals and how did they conduct themselves in public? How powerful was each group in the state? In conflict throughout the Nineteenth Century, the opponents reached the peak of their antagonism in the years between 1858 and 1866, the the years of the New Era, the constitutional conflict, and the first two wars of German unification. Fundamental social, economic, and political ideals were at …

Graham Greene: A Study Of Absolute And Relative Concepts Of Morality, Ruth E. Galen
Graham Greene: A Study Of Absolute And Relative Concepts Of Morality, Ruth E. Galen
English Language and Literature ETDs
Graham Greene did not receive serious critical attention as a novelist until the publication of Brighton Rock in 1938. Even then, because he chose to subtitle it an "entertainment" many critics refused to consider it a serious novel at all, although it treats of evil working through a boy. Anyone who reads Brighton Rock immediately after "entertainments" such as A Gun for Sale or The Ministry of Fear cannot help noticing a deepening awareness of values in the author.
