It is an attempt to get a broad overview of Anthroposophy rather than concentrating on any one of its phases. It is an exploratory study of a preliminary nature, and in no measure does it try to be definitive on any part of the movement.

This study is occasioned by the fact that the fourth chapter of the treatise “De Unitate Ecclesias,” written by the Bishop of Carthage, St. Cyprian, about 251 A.D., has come down in two quite different forms. One version apparently bases the unity of the Church in explicit terms on the primacy of Peter over and above the authority of other bishops, while the other version speaks in more cautious and general terms of Peter as a symbol of unity and power in which all bishops share equally.

In this study, the time element will deal especially with the later medieval period, looking briefly at the times under Alfred the Great (ca. 900), and more closely at the time under the Normans, from 1066 on to immediately before the Reformation Century.
