Historical Evidence For Infant Baptism, John D. Frey Jun 1958

Historical Evidence For Infant Baptism, John D. Frey

Bachelor of Divinity

Shortly before He ascended into heaven, Jesus gave this command: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. The Book of Acts presents this command in action. “So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls” But nowhere in Scripture do we find the specific command, "Baptize infants.” Nor do we find a statement which specifically says that infants were baptized. This has caused many people to wonder about infants. Are they also to …

The World Of Jesus In The Words Of Jesus, Robert L. Einspahr Jun 1958

The World Of Jesus In The Words Of Jesus, Robert L. Einspahr

Bachelor of Divinity

The scope of this thesis is limited to the words of Jesus as found in a Red-letter edition of the Authorized Version of the Bible. From these words of Jesus, terms and phrases were chosen that had, or appeared to have allusions to the world of the first century after Christ. These terms and phrases were then arranged into related categories as indicated by the chapter headings. Intensive reading was then done in the works and writings of missionaries and travelers in Palestine, of professional archaeologists and Orientalists. In this reading special attention was given to data which shed light …

An Historical Study Of The Lutheran Sources Of The Book Of Common Prayer Of 1549, Arthur A. Preisinger Jun 1958

An Historical Study Of The Lutheran Sources Of The Book Of Common Prayer Of 1549, Arthur A. Preisinger

Bachelor of Divinity

The question is, of course, how much influence did the German Reformers exercise over the English? Were their principles of liturgical reform the same? It will be the purpose of this research to try to discover just how much the Reformers in England depended on the influence of Lutheran reform; how much they actually took over into the Book of Common Prayer from the German service books. It cannot be denied that the Lutheran Reformation exerted a tremendous influence in England. Was this merely apolitical influence? Or did Lutheran theology penetrate deeply into the English system at that time?

Origen's Doctrine Of God As Relected In De Principiis, Carl A. Volz Jun 1958

Origen's Doctrine Of God As Relected In De Principiis, Carl A. Volz

Bachelor of Divinity

Although Origen's theology in the narrow, sense can hardly be called a synthesis of Christian dogma in the third century, yet an appreciation of him as a systematician requires an acquaintance with the theology of his predecessors. De Principiis did not evolve spontaneously from the mind of this great Alexandrian, but consciously or unconsciously drew upon the speculations and the formulations of the Fathers. For this reason a section has been included giving in very brief detail the theological atmosphere of the century preceding Origen, ending with his great North African contemporary, Tertullian.

The Interdenominational Relations Of The United Lutheran Church In America, Carl Bornmann Jun 1958

The Interdenominational Relations Of The United Lutheran Church In America, Carl Bornmann

Bachelor of Divinity

Among the various American Lutheran bodies, the United Lutheran Church in America is one of the best examples of a large communion which officially acknowledges the Symbols of Lutheranism and at the same time maintains a relative extensive series of relationships with various interdenominational Christian groups. This study will ignore the simple question: do these activities constitute unionism? Instead, this study will ask more objective question which cannot be answered with a simple (and often dogmatic) yes or no.

The History Of Lutheran High Schools In St. Louis (1855-1946), Dean Greunke Jun 1958

The History Of Lutheran High Schools In St. Louis (1855-1946), Dean Greunke

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this study is to give to the reader a history of Lutheran secondary education as it developed in St. Louis. The study may prove to be a review for those who are acquainted with the Lutheran high school question in this city, and, at the same time, it may fill certain gaps within the framework of the entire picture for those who are not familiar with it.

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of the research presented in the following pages is to enable the writer to serve in a better capacity as a missionary in a foreign country. Another purpose for this research is to bring the history of our Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod’s India Mission to a close. Missionary Elmer E. Griesse presented a thesis to Washington University, St. Louis, on the history of the …

A Brief History Of The Baptists Of Louisa County, Virginia To 1865, Roscoe Ashburn Musselwhite

Master's Theses

This is a brief history of the Baptist of Louisa County, Virginia, to 1865. It would be impossible to gather all the impressions made on Virginia society and the American way of life by Louisa Baptists. The author of this paper has not always been a Baptist, but is a Baptist by conviction. Much of the tradition and color of the old days is still noticeable in the Louisa County Baptist Churches. Louisa County has been and ever shall be a better county in which to live because of Louisa Baptists.

Some Representative Contemporary Concepts Of The Manifestation Of God In History And Creation, Herman Otten Jun 1958

Some Representative Contemporary Concepts Of The Manifestation Of God In History And Creation, Herman Otten

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis does not pretend to be an exhaustive study of the entire issue of God’s manifestations and natural theo1ogy. Few Missouri Synod Lutherans have concerned themselves with the problem. Jaroslav Pelikan refers to the “problem of natural theology" in his From Luther to Kierkegaard. He believes that Kant has rendered a great service to Lutheran theology by ridding it of Aristotelianism.

Education In Meaningful Worship For The Confirmation Class, Paul Wagner Jun 1958

Education In Meaningful Worship For The Confirmation Class, Paul Wagner

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The problem undertaken by the thesis is tied to this need for meaningful worship and the lack of materials. While books and articles have appeared from time to time, they have all been concerned primarily with phases of parish education other than the confirmation class. In Missouri Synod circles there have been only a very few significant works on worship education at any level. The purpose,, therefore, was to survey as many works in this area as time would permit and synthesize the findings into a workable approach toward the teaching of worship and the Liturgy in the confirmation class.

The Sacrements And Sacremental Actions In The Works Of August Friedrich Chrisitan Vilmar, Edward Peters Jun 1958

The Sacrements And Sacremental Actions In The Works Of August Friedrich Chrisitan Vilmar, Edward Peters

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This paper is limited in its main part to what August Vilmar had to say about the Sacraments and what he termed “sacramental actions" ( sakramentale Handlungen). It is difficult, in a few words, to determine just what Vilmar included under these terms because in keeping with the Lutheran Symbols he did not categorically limit the Sacraments to a certain number and exclude all other acts of the Church. In certain contexts he spoke of seven and more Sacraments, and in other contexts, of only two Sacraments, placing the lesser acts of the Church into the category “sacramental” actions." In …

The Study Of The Messianic Secret In St. Mark, Robert Strickert Jun 1958

The Study Of The Messianic Secret In St. Mark, Robert Strickert

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The general purpose of this thesis is to provide an historical survey of the hidden Messiahship of Jesus in the Gospel According to St. Mark. At the beginning of the present century William Wrede gave this theological problem the appropriate label, "The Messianic Secret." In the almost sixty years that have passed since the time of Wrede, this problem has presented a challenge to a number of scholars. These scholars have offered various answers and solutions. The approach in this thesis will be to present the views that have been held by some of these men.

An Experimental Course For Adult Confirmation Structured By The Nicene Creed, Paul Malte Jun 1958

An Experimental Course For Adult Confirmation Structured By The Nicene Creed, Paul Malte

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Through involvement as an instructor in the adult confirmation process of the Missouri Synod, and being aware of the obvious openness of the American citizen to religious conversation, the writer has undertaken a study of the needs and opportunities om this area. Specifically, the research and creative activity embodied in this thesis has been worked out in the direction of materials and course outlines for the adult confirmation process. An attempt has been made to survey representative courses shaped by pastors in the Missouri Synod and popular presentations of the basic Gospel written by men of other denominations. This exploration …

He Learned Obedience, Hebrews 5:18, Charles Froehlich Jun 1958

He Learned Obedience, Hebrews 5:18, Charles Froehlich

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this paper has been to arrive at the meaning of Hebrews 5:7-10 and more specifically. To answer the question: What does it mean when the text says that “Christ learned obedience” (verse 8)? Was Christ “sufficiently human”·to learn anything? If so, what was He able to learn?

The Tennessee Synod--It's History And Church Polity, Alvin Kollmann Jun 1958

The Tennessee Synod--It's History And Church Polity, Alvin Kollmann

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In considering the factors that played an important role in causing the establishment of the Tennessee Synod, it is necessary to consider the conditions in the Lutheran Church in .America especially during the years between 1800 and 1820. The conditions that must be considered are, in the order in which they will be treated in this chapter, rationalism, unionism, the language problem, the training of pastors, education and literature available at the time, and revivalism. A few observations on the pros and cons about the Tennessee Synod joining the General Synod or remaining out of that organization will then conclude …

The Christology Of The Seven Letters In Revelation Chapters Two And Three, With Special Reference To Possible Relationships Between The Author's Self-Designations And The Subject Matter Of The Letters, Ewald Otto Jun 1958

The Christology Of The Seven Letters In Revelation Chapters Two And Three, With Special Reference To Possible Relationships Between The Author's Self-Designations And The Subject Matter Of The Letters, Ewald Otto

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study does not attempt to add to the material on the history of the congregations or to the analyses of their graces and defects, zeal and lukewarmness. Rather, a portion of what: has been written was restudied from the standpoint: of the relationship between the self-designation3 and the contents of the letters against the backdrop of the Christology of the Apocalypse.

The biologist and the physicist must begin with certain assumption~. To claim otherwise reveals ignorance and vanity. The theologian, too, must begin somewhere. This study assumes that the Bible is the Word of God, that an inspiration without …

Racisim And The Chrisitian World Mission, Joseph Ellwanger Jun 1958

Racisim And The Chrisitian World Mission, Joseph Ellwanger

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The thesis may be divided into four main parts. Chapters II and III deal with the history of racism. Chapters IV and V show, the interaction of the Church's world mission and racism upon each other. The goal of the thesis is reached in Chapter VI, where the Christian world mission in a world of racism and counter-racism is outlined. And the special study on South Africa in Chapter VII is an application of the findings of the thesis to the most crucial area of Western racism at the present time.

Some Problems Of First Peter, Robert E. Boyette Jun 1958

Some Problems Of First Peter, Robert E. Boyette

Graduate Thesis Collection

This study is an introduction I to some of the problems found in First Peter. The first chapter will be devoted to the presentation of the traditional view of authorship. Does the epistle come to us with the authority of the chief of the apostles? Tradition says yes. The second chapter questions the traditional view. Some scholars have questioned or rejected the verdict of tradition. In the third chapter the problem of the spirits in prison will be considered. Scholars disagree relative to this interpretation. What is meant by preaching to the spirits in prison? Who are these spirits? What …

A Critique Of The Orders Of Matins And Vespers And The Offering Of A New Musical Setting, Robert Bergt Jun 1958

A Critique Of The Orders Of Matins And Vespers And The Offering Of A New Musical Setting, Robert Bergt

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The present thesis directs special attention to the last point. The musical settings of The Lutheran Hymnal are borrowed from Anglican and Gregorian traditions. This is not to say that Anglican and Gregorian chant per se are bad and unusable. Those responsible for putting the texts, tunes and accompaniments together did something adequate a generation ago. The present author believes that we have outgrown these and need to offer what will set off a new spark, a new life and love for Matins and Vespers. New musical settings may assist the renaissance.

After a brief historical background is given to …
