America, Listen And Live! A Special Lutheran Hour Address, Oswald C. Hoffmann Dec 1959

America, Listen And Live! A Special Lutheran Hour Address, Oswald C. Hoffmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

It is not my purpose to comment on the political results of Mr. Khruschchev's visit to the United States. I am a firm adherent of the doctrine of two realms, limiting the spheres of church and state. It is a Biblical truth, as well as a fact of human history, that God rules in both realms, although He does so in different ways.

Fasting And Bodily Preparation - A Fine Outward Training, Walter F. Fischer Dec 1959

Fasting And Bodily Preparation - A Fine Outward Training, Walter F. Fischer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The statement, "Fasting and bodily preparation are indeed a fine outward training," was used by Luther with immediate reference to preparation for Holy Communion. However, to understand this statement in its proper perspective, we need to consider the purpose of fasting as it appears in the Scriptures and in the worship of the church. This paper is an attempt to present such a survey with conclusions as to the specific purposes and benefits of Eucharistic fasting.

The Theology Of Synagog Architecture (As Reflected In The Excavation Reports), Martin H. Scharlemann Dec 1959

The Theology Of Synagog Architecture (As Reflected In The Excavation Reports), Martin H. Scharlemann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The origins of the synagog are lost in the obscurity of the past. There seem to be adequate reasons for believing that this religious institution did not exist in pre-Exilic times. Whether, however, the synagog came into being during the dark years of the Babylonian Captivity, or whether it dates back only to the early centuries after the return of the Jews to Palestine, is a matter of uncertainty. The oldest dated evidence we have for the existence of a synagog was found in Egypt in 1902 and consists of a marble slab which records the dedication of such a …

Plato's Political Philosophy (Abstract), Ludwig Edelstein Dec 1959

Plato's Political Philosophy (Abstract), Ludwig Edelstein

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Plato had one consistent theory of politics; the Republic, Politicus, and Laws form a unity, complementary rather than contradictory. These dialogues are all theoretical, none provides a blueprint for political action. Political theory establishes the standard by which we must judge and thus allows us to act according to an aim.

The Contribution Of A "Layman" To The Restoration Movement, Allan J. Hunter Dec 1959

The Contribution Of A "Layman" To The Restoration Movement, Allan J. Hunter

Graduate Thesis Collection

The name of Tomas Wharton Phillips, (1835-1912), occurs quite frequently in the history of the Disciples of Christ. Probably his family name is best known by its association with Phillips University, Enid, Oklahoma. There has also been a renewed interest in him through the recent completion of the "T.W. Phillips Memorial Library" in Nashville, Tennessee, now the headquarters of the Disciples of Christ Historical Society.

This general interst generated into a special interst, when, during the lectures on the history of the Disciples of Christ, a remark was made to the effect that "there was a need for a more …

Translators have rendered doxa as "opinion", "belief", and "judgment", among other renderings. All three translations are subject to criticism. We analyze doxa as prompted by a present perception or by a past perception registered and resuscitated. There is also a doxa prompted by a Form, or complex of Forms.
