The Altenburg Debate, William Schmelder Jun 1960

The Altenburg Debate, William Schmelder

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study is an attempt to understand what the issues were which culminated in the Altenburg Debate of 1841. Why did it take two years to find a solution to the problems of the colonists? Were any other solutions attempted? If there were, why were they unacceptable? Against whom did Walther debate at Altenburg? What position did the opposition2advocate? What was the source of Walther's theses? These and many other questions enter the mind of the student of the early history of the Missouri Synod when he begins to evaluate the Altenburg Debate.

The purpose of this study is to …

Contributions Of The Confessions To A Lutheran Philosophy Of Education, John Mager Jun 1960

Contributions Of The Confessions To A Lutheran Philosophy Of Education, John Mager

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Because of the central place which the Confessions give to the doctrine of justification we feel that we can do nothing less than make this doctrine the unifying principle in this thesis. We do so for this reason that the unifying principle or a Lutheran philosophy of education cannot be much diverse from the material principle of its theology. If theology is the basis or the foundation upon which the superstructure of a Lutheran philosophy of education can be built up, then the two and their unifying principles are more closely related than we might assume.

The Mexicans In Their Short Story, Paul Valerio May 1960

The Mexicans In Their Short Story, Paul Valerio

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

A study of the Mexican people as seen in their short story offers several advantages. The presentations of extensive variations of the human panorama supply an autochthonous basis for insight. In these presentations, one gains an acquaintance, at times surprisingly intimate, with the people. The short-story writers do not neglect any social level. What they observe become themes for their creativeness. They include the submissive as well as the arrogant, the poor, the suppressed, the ignorant, the mentally ill; all are worthy of their consideration. One problem, one theme, is viewed from as many sides as there are writers who …

The Career Of Jeronimo De Valderrama As Visitor General To New Spain, 1563-65., Marc Simmons

Latin American Studies ETDs

This essay proposes to present a view of certain aspects of colonial government and society in New Spain in the year 1563-1565, as revealed in the correspondence and reports of Licenciado Jeronimo de Valderrama, who served as Visitor-General of the viceroyalty during this period, and in other contemporary documents. Secondarily, it will attempt to illustrate the techniques involved in a general visitation (visita). In the present paper the author will, therefore, strive to clarify, on the basis of currently available documentation, various aspects of the Valderrama visitation and the last years of the administration of Viceroy Luis de Velasco I, …
