Alan Goff has turned up an interesting article in the 1978 Jewish Quarterly Review entitled "The Breaking of the Bow." It appears, from ancient Babylonian sources, that bows were symbols of political power. One thinks also of Odysseus bending the bow to prove himself. An overlord would break the bow of a disobedient vassal to symbolical ly put the rebel in his place.

Metals are mentioned frequently in the Book of Mormon. Gold, silver, iron and copper were important parts of the material culture during both Jaredite and Nephite times (Eth . 10:23, Hel. 6:9). There have been few metal artifacts, though, recovered archaeologically from Mesoamerican sites. This has led some specialists to insist that metallurgy was unknown in the region before late classic (A.D. 700 to 900) times.

Lynn and Hope Hilton, seasoned travelers along the Saudi Arabian peninsula, have for several years explored it from the perspective of Lehi's travels. In particular, they have compiled various travelers' descriptions of the short strip of verdant coastline called Salalah that lies along the otherwise barren and forbidding coast of South Arabia. The directions given in 1 Nephi lead a traveler to precisely this region.

A convenient and commendable collection of articles about Book of Mormon people is now off the press. It Begins with a Family, published in January by Deseret Book, reprints twenty-three articles that appeared in the Ensign from 1976 to 1978. The articles, by prominent authors and scholars, discuss the lives and characters of Lehi, Nephi, Jacob, Benjamin, Alma, Ammon, Korihor, Moroni, and other significant Book of Mormon figures.

A dinner to note the completion of the two-volume By Study and Also by Faith: Essays in Honor of Hugh Nibley on the Occasion of His Eightieth Birthday was held on September 7. In attendance were Brother and Sister Nibley, over half of those who contributed articles to the volumes, members of the administration at BYU, and Elder Neal Maxwell of the Quorum of the Twelve.

Facsimile #2 of the Pearl of Great Price is an Egyptian hypocephalus. Anciently such documents were placed under the head of a deceased person before burial. In a series of twelve lectures recently sponsored by F.A.R.M.S. and delivered at BYU, Hugh Nibley discussed "what the Egyptians themselves said about the hypocephalus," "what Joseph Smith said about it," and the facsimile's meaning and importance.

However, evidence from the ancient world indicates that many sacred works have been delivered to men by angels or other heavenly beings. A popular article recently published in the Canadian magazine Equinox contains a nice summary of current issues in regard to voyages from the Old World to America before Columbus. The writer, John Barber, handles the technical matters well and includes points from hitherto unpublished interviews with important scholars on the topic. Balance is maintained between the opposing sides in the argument over such voyages; no claim is made that colonizers positively made their way between the continents, yet the reader comes away realizing that significant evidence exists to support the notion.

The second volume of By Study and Also by Faith: Essays in Honor of Hugh W. Nibley has just been published by F.A.R.M.S. and Deseret Book. This completes a landmark 2-volume set of essays by fifty scholars. This volume contains many essays that will interest Latter-day Saint readers. Edited by Dr. John M. Lundquist and Dr. Stephen D. Ricks, the volume is divided into two parts. The section on the "Scriptures of the Latter-day Saints" contains ten articles- fully half the volume-that deal specifically with the Book of Mormon.
