Tax Policy And Foreign Direct Investment: Evidence From Sub-Saharan African Countries, Lulu Kafunda

This study explores the relationship between tax policy and foreign direct investment (FDI) in sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries, differentiating between two major components of FDI, namely greenfield investment and cross-border merger and acquisition (M&A). Using longitudinal data on 32 SSA countries across 16 years and a mixed effect model approach, I find that corporate income tax (CIT) rates aren’t a key factor for FDI inflow in the region. Instead, the study finds that trade openness, governance quality, and natural resources promote overall FDI inflow, while GDP growth and governance quality particularly attract greenfield FDI. This interdisciplinary project investigates the therapeutic impact of Studio Ghibli films, with a particular focus on themes of resilience and healing. By conducting an in-depth analysis of My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), and Princess Mononoke (1997), the study examines how director Hayao Miyazaki employs motifs such as magical realism, transcendental beauty, and the interconnectedness of humans and nature to craft narratives that evoke profound emotional responses. These motifs not only shape the narrative structure but also create immersive experiences that facilitate emotional catharsis, self-discovery, and a deeper connection to the natural world.

US-funded military dictatorships repressed Islamists as an extension of the policy in most of the Arab world for most of the first decade of 2000. This study explores how Memon women exercise their reproductive agency within the context of patriarchal family structures in the Memon community. The study investigates decision-making dynamics in Memon women’s everyday lives from their educational and professional choices to their interpersonal relationships with their husband and in-laws as well as discover the intricacies of how women arrive at their reproductive choices regarding children, contraceptives, child-rearing, and more. The performance of participants in the Miss Gay Muchakang Pangkalawan [Miss Ugly Gay Universe] in Quiapo, Manila, reflects characteristics of the flamboyant and effeminate bakla. However, these stereotypical depictions may not always be consistent with how participants view themselves. This study argues that an introspective understanding of how participants make sense of their identity work engendered by ever-turning tropes reveals slippages that can liberate them from existing oppressive stereotypes. By utilizing personal narrative and ethnographic reflexivity, this study deconstructs the participants’ performances, revealing identity-making that may reinforce or resist dominant discourses on the bakla under which these narratives are …

Skepticism about moral freedom appears to be on the rise. This essay attempts to blunt the force of the recent growth of free will skepticism by appealing to a form of rational faith in free will. With a compelling account of the nature of faith (borrowed from Lara Buchak), we can see that even someone convinced by Pereboom-style skeptical arguments could nevertheless rationally accept and act on the claim that we enjoy moral freedom. Given an underappreciated aspect of P. F. Strawson’s famous paper “Freedom and Resentment,” this result should be less surprising than we might have thought. Further, this …

Seventh-day Adventists are not usually known for taking authority over sickness or taking a person by the hand and saying, “In the Name of Jesus of Nazareth, arise and walk.” And rightly so, for Adventists have been counseled that when praying for the sick “our prayers must take the form, not of command, but of intercession” (White 1942:230, 1915:218). Why, because only God knows what is right and best (White 1948:148, 149). A major theme of both the Old and New Testaments is that of healing and restoration. The Old Testament teaches that it is God who heals (Deut 32:39; Exod 15:26), while the New Testament presents Jesus’ ministry as one of healing and restoration (Luke 4:18-19). Healing was clearly a major theme in Christ’s earthly ministry with biblical scholars reporting that approximately one fifth of gospel texts relate stories of Christ’s healing miracles. This article addresses the trauma of Stalinism from the standpoint of a missiological reading of Luke 4:16-21. This programmatic sermon of Jesus at Nazareth, whose meaning is unfolded in the larger context of Luke-Acts, is of primary importance for the current Russian culture, which is suffering from the consequences of a time when its culture was warped by the forces of the demonic realm. The rationale for using Luke-Acts in a post-Soviet theology of mission and the cluster of theological theses that underlie Jesus’ program of liberation are both foundational for a missiological paradigm intended for post-totalitarian Russian society.
