Dress To Impress: New Composition Instructors' Interpretations And Embodiment Of Professionalism As Displayed Through Dress, Jacqueline C. Cano Diaz

While previous research in rhetoric and composition investigates how novice composition instructors negotiate the boundaries of professionalism and identity (Dall'Alba; Grouling; Restaino), the role of dress, or "performative strategic attire" (Mckoy), in crafting these teaching personas has not yet been explored. Viewing everyday dress choices through the lens of embodied rhetoric allows for a deeper understanding of the complex decision-making process of choosing what to wear (Woodward). Further, analyzing dress choice through embodied rhetoric showcases how clothing becomes a tool to craft a persona and inhabit an identity or role. In her new book entitled Jews, Food, and Spain, Hélène Jawhara Piñer seeks to demonstrate both the process through which the Jewish cuisine of the Iberian Middle Ages acted as a cultural identifier, and how this culinary culture has been maintained in the modern Sephardic communities. In the United States, hair salons remain unofficially segregated by race, reflecting broader patterns of systemic inequality with deep historical roots and contemporary manifestations. This dissertation examines Black hair not merely as a physical attribute but as a profound aspect of cultural identity and personal expression. It aims to illuminate the broader implications of salon segregation, challenging the notion that it is a natural outcome of human preferences or tendencies. Instead, it argues that this segregation is the result of entrenched social processes, deliberate structural racism, and discriminatory policies that cause significant harm to Black individuals. In May–June 2024, a trial excavation was conducted along the southern margins of Nahal Hevron, approximately 600 m north of Tel Be’er Sheva’ (Permit No. A-9823/2024; map ref. 184707-5060/573003-337; Fig. 1), in advance of the planned expansion of the ‘Omer wastewater treatment plant. The excavation was carried out on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority and funded by the ‘Omer Local Council. The excavation was directed by A. Ecological models of competition have provided great explanatory power regarding synonymy in derivational morphology. Competition models of this type have certainly shown their utility, as they have demonstrated, among other things, the relevance of frequency measures, productivity, compositionality and analyzability when comparing the development of morphological constructions. There has been less consideration of alternative models that could be used to describe the historical co-development of suffixes that produce words with sometimes similar forms or meanings but are not inevitably or solely in competition. The symbiotic model proposed in this article may help answer larger questions in linguistics, such as how …

The United States established internment camps during World War II, detaining families from Latin American Countries for national security, with a focus on German, Italian, and Japanese ethnicities (Roosevelt 1941). However, German ethnicity families living in Latin America who were taken to internment camps in Crystal City, Texas, are less visible in history, Jane Jarboe Russell’s book “The Train to Crystal City” made some of the internees’ stories more visible. I will contend that the principal reason for Peru’s collaboration in the U.S-Latin American Internment Program was to obtain economic, political and social benefits from the United States which would …

This introduction provides a valuable overview of the life and accomplishments of Taner Akçam, a Turkish-American historian and sociologist. An international authority on the Armenian Genocide and a leader in human rights, Akçam is the first scholar of Turkish origin to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide and to publish groundbreaking research on this topic. Imprisoned in 1976 for criticizing injustices in Turkey and the government’s treatment of minorities, especially the Kurds, Akçam escaped and fled to Germany. Amnesty International adopted him as a “prisoner of conscience” and the German government granted him asylum. He eventually obtained citizenship in Germany, where he …

Mentoring within the community of faith is a disciple-making process. Yet, research reveals bringing people together for shared learning experiences is a rarity. A four-week mentor training project at Mount Olive Baptist Church was developed to address the perceived need. Senior adult leaders received mentorship and training to engage with young adults. Although the statistical analysis was inconclusive, the project training sessions and qualitative feedback revealed positively a quest for other efforts in this direction.

The distribution and circulation of independent films are fundamental but often neglected aspects in film studies. This article presents a distribution experience followed by the author of the text himself: the case of the independent documentary Maka. Produced thanks to an academic grant and the collaboration with two Italian production companies, Maka was screened at numerous international festivals and received several awards. Distribution involved both traditional cinema circuits and independent digital platforms. The film has been screened in academic and associative contexts, in Italy and the United States, encouraging debates on social and cultural issues. The participation of the protagonist, …

Increasingly, higher education institutions are investing in a booming microcredentialing industry. These flexible, self-paced courses often promise to improve learners’ hireability through teaching skills that meet market and employer demands. This paper investigates the perceptions of microcredentials within the context of hiring entry-level workers who recently graduated from undergraduate technical and professional writing academic programs. Our qualitative research study reports on the findings from 4 interviews with hiring managers and recruiters in a U.S. metropolitan area. In the guided interview protocol, participants were asked to reflect on their reactions to two sample résumés that included different qualifying credentials. The findings …
