Remedios Varo (1908-1963) wrote numerous surrealist texts that dialogue with her prolific artistic production. Alchemy, feminism, and psychoanalysis have been studied as central themes in her paintings, yet this paper focuses on humor and parody in Varo’s written works –including her letters, short stories, and dreams– to uncover the seminal ideas and images that emerge in her visual art. Humor and parody are fundamental links between Varo’s narrative and paintings. She embraces the spontaneity of the surrealist écriture automatique and the illogical amor fou but at the same time pushes the limits of surrealist dogma and creates a uniquely nonpatriarchal …

A Liturgy for Wholeness emerged from the opportunity to “shape ecclesiastical culture that reimagines the holistic flourishing of vocational pastors.” The research suggests that many pastors are not flourishing but surviving. Unrealistic expectations, comparison, an unreasonable number of needed competencies, and long work weeks contribute to this challenge, often resulting in burnout or moral decline. Reimagining pastoral work within the life arenas of divine calling, daily well-being, formational relationships, and resilience creates a significant opportunity for pastors to thrive holistically.

The Turkana people of Kenya are primarily oral learners, processing information in oral ways. Oral learners are completely reliant on what they hear, see, and experience because they cannot or choose not to read.¹ Missionaries from highly literate western cultures unwittingly burdened these oral learners with literacy dependent teaching methods and discipleship practices. This item is a copy of the typescript unpublished memoir of Abraham Miller (1888-1965) from Janova in present day Lithuania. Miller immigrated to the United States, arriving in Alabama in 1909. Abe and his wife Minnie ran a small dry goods store in Mobile until 1945. His memoir describes his family in Russia, the journey to America, getting started in business, and a family trip he took with Minnie later in life.

Mark’s use of sighing/groaning language ([ἀνα-]στενάζω) in 7:34 and 8:12, when set alongside the LXX and other NT use of the terms, provides a powerful glimpse of the mystery of the Incarnation, as the Son of Man groans in solidarity with humanity and creation and the Son of God groans in concert with the Father and the Spirit in the eschatological work of liberation, healing, and restoration.

Early American Methodism inherited a staunch abolitionist position from John Wesley. Bishops Francis Asbury and Thomas Coke strongly opposed slavery. Under their leadership, the early minutes and disciplines included a series of rules that required preachers to free their slaves and ameliorate the effects of slavery. They also waged an ongoing “war” with the various state legislatures that allowed slavery. After a strong backlash threatened Methodism’s ability to minister to slaves, enter plantations, and work in the South, the church prioritized the evangelistic mandate over the cultural mandate. The use of “exile, alien, and stranger” language by New Testament writers in their descriptions of the church provides important insights into the appropriate self-understanding (identity) and the ultimate allegiance of Jesus’ followers. The lived experience of North Atlantic believers can make it hard to hear and internalize this apostolic language for the church; reading in the company of Majority World Christians can open up the possibility of deeper understanding and embodiment of these realities.
