Further Evidence From The Book Of Mormon For A Book Of Moses-Like Text On The Brass Plates, Jeffrey D. Lindsay
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Students of the Book of Mormon have long mined the Old Testament as a rich source of influence on Nephite writers. However, surprising recent finds suggest that an ancient text related to the Book of Moses may have been an especially significant influence as well. That possibility was raised in Noel Reynolds’s early analytical paper, “The Brass Plates Version of Genesis.” He found thirty-three proposed parallels between the Book of Moses and the Book of Mormon, some of which pointed to a one-way connection with the Book of Moses as the source. Μαλακοί And ΆρσενοκοῖΤαι In 1 Corinthians 6:9-10: Reception History And Its Applicability To Modern Homosexuality, Taylor Patz

This thesis is arguing that μαλακοί and ἀρσενοκοῖται in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 should not have a place in the formation of modern Christian theological stances on homosexuality because neither μαλακοί nor ἀρσενοκοῖται conceptually align with modern homosexuality. Chapters one through four cover background context on Jewish, Greek, and Roman views of sexuality. This background information is to provide context, based on the literary evidence we have today, on what Paul could have conceptually intended by μαλακοί and ἀρσενοκοῖται. In 2018, the New York Times Bestseller I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter (2017) by the Mexican American poet, novelist and essayist, Erika L. Sánchez was translated into Spanish. Two editions were published: La hija que no soñaste in Mexico and Yo no soy tu perfecta hija mexicana in the United States. Although the paratextual information of each edition differs–that being the title and the brief resources on mental health–the body of the translation is the same. The target audience of each edition lives in a different country which implies understanding different cultural references. This thesis examines the original …

Relationships between people are influenced by what they share, their commonalities. Empathy is an important commonality enabling people to internalize each other’s well-being and create empathetic networks that can provide important economic and social advantages. Shared antipathy for another person or group is another commonality enabling people to create cheap networks. Cheap networks are inexpensive to create, but they are unlikely to provide the economic and social advantages of empathetic ones. Cheap networks focus mainly on defensive and destructive acts that often produce costly consequences. In addition, they can be taken over by strong leaders who use them to pursue …

Geologists As Colonial Scouts: The Rogers Expedition To Otavi And Tsumeb, Namibia, 1892–1895, Selby Hearth
Geology Faculty Research and Scholarship
From 1892 to 1895, the South West Africa Company (SWACO) expedition led by geologist Matthew Rogers conducted the first geologic mapping in Namibia’s Otavi Mountains, including the now world-famous Tsumeb Mine. This paper uses archival documents from the Rogers expedition to trace his geologic contributions and to illustrate important themes in the relationships between 19th century colonial geologists, Western colonizing governments, Indigenous communities, resource extraction, and corporations. To carry out his mapping, Rogers performed a continuous balancing act between British and German colonial powers and local African leaders. The local leaders and communities he interacted with variously resisted his incursions, …

Geology Faculty Research and Scholarship
Mineral wealth has motivated and funded extractive empires, often at the expense of local communities, workers, natural environments, and public health. Yet those connections are not recorded in traditional mineral catalogues, which divorce specimens from context. This article examines the roots of those omissions and situates mineral cataloguing in the larger body of literature on knowledge organization systems and their relation to power. We examine how colonial ideologies of land and people become entrenched in mineral cataloguing practices, and how this reinforces the ways that contemporary geologists think about their work. We don’t often think of identity as a choice, but rather something we are born into by circumstance of birth and inheritance. This paper addresses identity by assertion. Virtual worlds afford the opportunity for a more fluid concept of self: identity with intent. Understanding this approach can empower our actions and results in the virtual and natural worlds. The authors draw on fifteen years teaching this topic in the virtual world of Second Life as part of a class on collaborative online engagement. Kossi Efoui’s sixth novel, Une magie ordinaire, constitutes his intellectual autobiography in that it follows the reconstruction of an “intellectual development” (Paul Ricoeur, 1995) by retracing his own trajectory as a writer in exile, born and raised in a dictatorship, forced to live the last days of his mother’s life away from her. This study explores the role played by private life, history, and literature in the reconstruction of the writer’s trajectory that unfolds in this novel. Dany Laferrière’s chronicles which make up Les années 80 dans ma vieille Ford (2005), are presented in the form of snapshots around situations and personalities that marked him in Haiti, and in North America where he took refuge in June 1976 (Montreal followed by stays in New York and Miami). He talks about colleagues from Le Petit Samedi Soir or intellectuals he portrayed in New York for Haïti-Observateur, with whom he crossed swords on more than one occasion. Based on Les corps glorieux des mots et des êtres. Esquisse d’un jardin africain à la bénédictine, this text would like to analyze, at the confluence of sociology and rhetoric, the modalities (with their variations and their extensions) by which V. Y. Mudimbe broadens intellectual autobiography to other modes of writing and functions as a dialogic space between poetry and prose, experience and fantasy, reality and imagination. Retracing his pathway, Mudimbe makes his text a journey within oneself, a quest for the “absolute elsewhere” or a quest for the total Self. A feeling of lack emerges which explains this …

In this study of autobiography by French-speaking writers, we propose to construct a syntax for the genre, after recalling the great difficulty of tackling such a vast subject for so long. From then on, any study of autobiography implies confronting it with other related forms, such as essays, memoirs, autofiction, testimonies or diaries, all characterised by the assumed subjectivity of the “I” narrator, who recounts a life journey as well as a personal reflection on world events. This article aims at two closely linked objectives : on the one hand, to show how the philosophical essays of V. Y. Mudimbe carry autobiographical sequences which complete or explain certain passages of his intellectual autobiography (The glorious bodies of words and beings) and, on the other hand, to question the stakes of such a rather singular practice in African philosophy. The blues is a rich musical tradition based in the music styling of African Americans in the Deep South circa 1860. With origins in spirituals, work songs, and field hollers, the blues offers a glimpse into the lives and struggles of African Americans. One of the earliest pioneers in the blues was Columbus native, Gertrude "Ma" Rainey. Known as the "Mother of Blues", Ma Rainey left an indelible mark on audiences she performed for and musicians she worked with.
