Conceptualizing Nazism In America Through Alternative History Media, Matthew Fear
Conceptualizing Nazism In America Through Alternative History Media, Matthew Fear
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Even before the United States' entry into World War II, there has been a unique fascination regarding the prospect of the triumph of Nazism over the collective Allied powers. While every work exists as a product of its time, all share common themes and examine historical facts with an allohistorical lens to imagine a world wherein Hitler and the German Reich were successful in their schemes of world domination and the Final Solution. Despite plenty of historical narratives available for review and analysis, the idea of Nazism surviving beyond the confines of a doomed Germany has remained the most explored, …

The 1904 Saint Louis World’s Fair, known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, has long been known for its significant impact on America and the world. This research explores the intended purpose of the 1904 World’s Fair’s United States Government Building and its exhibits of the War and Navy Departments. Furthermore, this analysis investigates the visitor experience of the Government Building’s characteristics and exhibits. The Failed 1971-1973 Redevelopment Of Pruitt-Igoe, Rachael Heriford
The Failed 1971-1973 Redevelopment Of Pruitt-Igoe, Rachael Heriford
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Majority of public housing in the United States is a failure of cyclical nature. Historians have examined the collapse of public housing either at a local level via the examination of a specific housing project or through a federal level by researching HOPE VI, the current federal housing policy since the 1990s that encourages demolishing and privatization of public housing. Up until the 1990s, demolition wasn't as common as it is today, and became more normalized after the demolition of Pruitt-Igoe in 1973. Pruitt-Igoe is one of the more notable examples of how badly public housing can fail. However, the …
Recognition Promotes Sodomy: Gay Lib Vs. The University Of Missouri, Micah Hillier
Recognition Promotes Sodomy: Gay Lib Vs. The University Of Missouri, Micah Hillier
Undergraduate Research Symposium
In the spring of 1971 Larry Eggleston, president and founder of the Gay Lib student organization at the University of Missouri, submitted the proper documentation for formal recognition of his club. The dean, and subsequently the executives of the University of Missouri, denied the club’s petition. What followed was a contentious game of chess between the university and its gay student population, the outcome of which would span seven years and litigation that rose all the way to the supreme court. What motivated the University of Missouri’s decision to ban gay student organizations in the 1970s? The answers can be …
Gangsterism, The Urban Ruling Elite, And The Guomindang: Power Sharing During The Early Years Of The Chinese Republic, 1927-1937, Evan Boyle
Undergraduate Research Symposium
China’s Republican era, prior to the Japanese occupation and while under the authority of Chiang Kai-shek and the Guomindang (c. 1927-1937), has in many respects been underexplored by historians. The Shanghai Massacre, Chiang’s subsequent military campaigns against the Communists, the factious divisions within the Guomindang, and the ongoing Japanese campaign to annex parts of the Chinese mainland are often highlighted. In my presentation, rather than focusing on the various foes of the Guomindang, I plan to focus on the political alliances Chiang forged. In particular I will explore his ties to, and alliances with Organized Crime (specifically Du Yuesheng and …

Conflict And Race In Literature & Law. The Case Of Americanah, Emanuela Ignatoiu Sora
Conflict And Race In Literature & Law. The Case Of Americanah, Emanuela Ignatoiu Sora
Comparative Woman
In Americanah, the 2013 novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, there is a scene when one of the characters, Laura, speaks of her Ugandan classmate who did not get along with an African-American colleague. Laura is surprised as, for her, all persons of color are similar, with no understanding for their differences in background, personal stories and experiences. The novel depicts and critiques this very categorization of race, which flattens differences, conflating groups and individuals who might share very little, if anything. For a long time, law (with its stipulations, precedents and rulings) has operated in a similar manner, disengaging …
Against Conflict, Against Occupation: Protest Songs In India And Kashmir, Mridula Sharma
Against Conflict, Against Occupation: Protest Songs In India And Kashmir, Mridula Sharma
Comparative Woman
The establishment of All India Progressive Writers’ Association in colonial India encouraged artists to articulate and examine social realities. Literary-cultural productions, particularly popular songs in Hindi films, in independent India continued to remain preoccupied with social conflicts such as religious bigotry and communalism. Sahir Ludhianvi’s “Yeh Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaye” (trans. “What can one gain, even if one gains this world?,” 1958 ) and “Yeh Kiska Lahu Hai, Kaun Mara” (trans. “Whose Blood Has Spilled? Who Died?,” 1961) are early examples of a lasting tide of pessimism owing to communal violence during the 1947 India-Pakistan …

Using specific references to the films Kumare, An Honest Liar, as well as the life of cult leader Jim Jones, this paper investigates the tactics used, including deception, false narratives, myth, ritual, isolation, confirmation bias, social proof, love-bombing, and the …

Cultural Diplomacy And Global Challenges In G20 Indonesia 2022, Poppy Setiawati Nurisnaeny, Hendra Kaprisma, Suwedi Suwedi
International Review of Humanities Studies
Indonesia has been chosen to host the G20 summit in Bali in November 2022. Indonesia has prepared many agendas ahead of the execution of this summit. This preparation concerns the technical implementation of multilateral relations, which have undergone significant changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, Indonesia needs help hosting the G20 due to the fractured multilateral relations of several G20 member countries caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict in early 2022. As a result, Indonesia must mediate between the disputing parties to resolve this issue by selecting appropriate communication methods. Cultural diplomacy is one approach. Cultural diplomacy is a non-coercive …

International Review of Humanities Studies
This research delves into the extensive lexicon of the Javanese language, specifically focusing on expressions related to feelings of love. The presence of multiple Javanese lexicons denoting love poses a significant challenge, prompting the central question: What are the semantic nuances that distinguish each lexicon, given the absence of absolute synonyms? The research aims to elucidate the semantic fields that differentiate each love-related lexicon in Javanese. Data for this research is drawn from four distinct Javanese dictionaries, spanning various publication periods. Additionally, the study incorporates diverse data sources, including a book titled "Antologi Cerita Pendek Bahasa Jawa di Yogyakarta …

The Manifestation Of Misogyny In The Pick Me Boy Trend On Tiktok Indonesia, Ying Wang, Mina Elfira
International Review of Humanities Studies
Misogyny is hatred, contempt, or prejudice against women or girls. It is a form of sexism used to keep women in a lower social status than men, thereby maintaining patriarchal social roles. Hegemonic masculinity is the most exalted configuration of gender practices that legitimizes patriarchy. This article draws on the framework of Raewyn Connell's theory of masculinity and Kate Manne's concept of misogyny to discuss the phenomenon of Indonesian TikTok videos with the hashtag “Pick Me Boy” or #Pick Me Boy. Pick Me Boy challenge traditional masculinity to gain women's attention, and then demean women if rejected. This article uses …

Absent But Present: Propaganda Strategies Of The Japanese Occupation In Indonesia As Narrated In Kamishibai In Djawa Baroe Magazine, Rouli Esther Pasaribu
International Review of Humanities Studies
This paper investigated the propaganda strategies in kamishibai (a paper play) story telling in Djawa Baroe Magazine. This study employed text analysis methods and propaganda theories from Jowett and Donnell on the seven kamishibai and found the following propaganda strategies. First, Western powers were portrayed negatively. Second, Japan was not explicitly featured in kamishibai stories. Third, local cultural elements in Javanese culture were used to convey propaganda messages. These findings indicate that entertainment media, such as kamishibai, can be used as propaganda media and subtly inserted using specific trivial strategies.
The Concept Of The Devarāja In Leadership At The Royal Palace Of Yogyakarta, Ghilman Assilmi
The Concept Of The Devarāja In Leadership At The Royal Palace Of Yogyakarta, Ghilman Assilmi
International Review of Humanities Studies
The Yogyakarta Palace is one of the Islamic sultanates that still exists in Indonesia. Even though the Yogyakarta Palace has an Islamic style and has been influenced by modernization which has penetrated aspects of state and society, the embodiment of the God-King concept from ancient Hindu eras remains embedded in the power of the king, state life, and the obedience of the surrounding community to the palace system. This paper has a problem regarding how to apply the concept of politics and power in the Yogyakarta Palace. A historical approach is used to reveal the meaning of the palace in …
