The town of St. Joseph, established in 1835, served as a deep-water port for receiving and shipping dry goods up the Apalachicola River north along the vast network of navigable inland waterways in the southeastern U.S. during the early nineteenth century. Unfortunately, this town was hit with a yellow fever epidemic, a fire, and a series of hurricanes that, combined with the infancy of its cotton trade activities, eventually devastated its economy and population. The town disappeared by 1842, only much later to be replaced by modern Port St. Joe (est. 1909), located north of the original settlement. However, St. …

After the many global tragedies of the early 20th century, an emerging sense of social and moral urgency catalyzed the nations of the world to attempt to develop and promulgate ethical standards for clinical research. Seminal documents such as The Nuremberg Code, The Declaration of Helsinki, and The Belmont Report attempted to bridge the chasm that allowed such tragedies. The Belmont Report, specifically, pointed towards universal ethical principles that later evolved into what is widely known now as the four core bioethical tenets: beneficence, the duty to promote the welfare and good of others; nonmaleficence, the obligation to …

Millions of undocumented people live in America and roughly a million have entered every year since 2021. This is a hot-button issue in mainstream politics for a variety of reasons. However, there is an issue that tends to get overlooked which is their health care. In most states, undocumented people do not qualify for healthcare coverage of any kind. This leaves them reliant on EMTALA and emergency departments (ED). Through an examination of the various state and federal policies that pertain to undocumented people’s healthcare coverage, we can see that these people are in desperate need of assistance. The Victorian philosopher John Ruskin is primarily remembered for his political writing, as a forerunner of what we would today call Christian Socialist politics. In aesthetic circles, he is also often considered something of a punchline: a stuffy conservative who represents the worst vagaries of his day, an enemy of abstraction. Ruskin thus has a double-being in cultural memory: both an admired social reformer and a laughingstock art critic.

These views of Ruskin can be potentially reconciled by showing how his critics have misunderstood his aesthetic philosophy. Ruskin is often described as an aesthetic realist, the view on which art …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This workshop presents a mobile-friendly Web Audio application for a “technology ensemble play-along” of Terry Riley’s 1964 composition In C. Attendees will join in a reading of In C using available web-enabled devices as musical instruments. We hope to demonstrate an accessible music-technology experience that relies on face-to-face interaction within a shared space. In this all-electronic implementation, no special musical or technical expertise is required.

Norse Inspired Tales: Four Changes of Fate is a collection of four original short stories meant to act as an introduction to a broader literary world where Norse myth meets late eighteen hundred's, San Francisco. The introduction gives background on my literary journey and explains some of the choices made within these stories. Each following story reveals the characters and the world they currently inhabit.

Generally, Aesop’s The Complete Fables is considered didactic for children. In my paper, I discuss how Aesop represents nonhumans in his fables and how they could negatively affect the psychology of children aged 7-12 if we as parents, teachers and legal guardians do not become conscious of its problematic didactic function. I show that most of the anthropomorphized animals in The Complete Fables have anthropocentric and provide environmentally harmful rhetorics. Black Aesthetics is the philosophical inquiry into the objects and practices of expressions coming from people who have been racialized as black. These expressive practices then lend to the creation of the life-worlds of people subjected to racist discourses. One such author in the contemporary English society, Bernadine Evaristo, responds to anti-black racist discourses by exploring the cultural plurality of British black life-worlds. Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein features a surprisingly extensive variety of locations through which Victor Frankenstein travels, ranging from the vibrant cities of London and Oxford to the isolated Orkney islands and Arctic lands. Scholars have analyzed the roles which some of these settings, namely, the Alps and the Arctic, play in the novel, and many have noted the importance of travel to the text. However, little scholarship exists assessing how Victor’s travels as a whole impact him, as well as their collective purpose within the story. Milton, Immortality, And Obtaining Eliot's "Significant Emotion", Aaron By Gorner

In his essay Tradition and the Individual Talent, T. S. Eliot famously asserts that very few can actually access "significant emotion" in poetry, and do so by understanding where relics of the classical tradition assert their immortality. In my article, I support Eliot's claims by demonstrating two (previously undiscussed) occasions where Milton, via Paradise Lost, inserts Christianity into the classical world: Satan and Abdiel alluding to Virgil's Remulus and Ascanius, and then Eve and Adam with Virgil's Nisus and Euryalus. Ultimately it will be apparent that not only does Milton's poetry obtain Eliot's "significant emotion" and its associated immortality, …

Christina Rossetti’s “Goblin Market” is probably her most critically acclaimed literary masterpiece. It has been accepted undoubtedly as an allegory of something, but critics have not been able to come to a unanimous conclusion as to what. Some have tried to establish it as a Christian allegory of Fall and Redemption, while others as an allegory of sexual temptation. Certain critics have hinted that this poem could be an allegory of the literary marketplace during the 19^th century, which was wholly dominated by men, women’s entry into that marketplace being either restricted or marked by insurmountable obstacles. This essay explores the intersection of postmodernism and multiculturalism in Toni Morrison's novel, Song of Solomon. It delves into the destabilization of historical metanarratives by postmodernism through the theories of Jean-François Lyotard, which challenges the notion of a singular truth and questions who constructs popular historical narratives. The essay discusses the role of the victors, particularly white males, in shaping history and the process of legitimation through which historical facts are determined. It examines how Morrison's novel offers an alternative history that highlights African American perspectives and challenges the dominant white narrative. Historian Albrecht Classen’s contention that “the culture of death . provides us with a measuring stick for human society at large” is particularly illuminating when analyzing death and Christian salvation near the religious chasm of the Reformation divide. My study focuses on reckoning as it is illustrated in late medieval and early modern allegorical English drama. The Christian belief in a soul’s redemption or damnation after death was preceded by a crucial supernatural happening, a reckoning.
