SACAD: Scholarly Activities

The Art Mindfulness Initiative was a student-led 4 week workshop focusing on providing other students with affordable ways to use art to destress, center oneself, and take a break from the hecticness of life. Each week, students gathered to learn about psychology and mental health from the NAMI and Psych Club then learned a new craft from art students. At the end of the workshop, everyone’s work was put together to make a conjoined piece to be displayed in the April Art Walk.

Animation is an integral part of our daily lives. From entertainment, to advertisements, to medical visualizations and everything in between, it permeates our world. But what makes animation so compelling? Why do we connect with it so well? And what makes it visually appealing?

Humans are story driven creatures, and so we gravitate towards time-based media—it’s the perfect vehicle for telling stories. Our goal was to explore the variety of styles and tools used in animation, research the 12 principles, understand the process of creating a work from start to finish, and successfully demonstrate the science and art of animation.

This study explores how religious beliefs and experiences evolve and impact individuals as they transition from adolescence into adulthood. It aims to gain insights into the ways in which religion influences social interactions, emotional well-being, and personal identity formation. Research on religion in adolescence into adulthood can promote understanding and tolerance of diverse religious beliefs and practices. Through this study I aim to provide a framework for the ways in which society can appreciate the plurality of religious experiences, fostering respect and empathy among individuals from different religious backgrounds. Common practice has Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet identified as a tragic love story, which has antecedents tracing back as far as Pyramus and Thisbe by Ovid. Though valid, this interpretation plumbs only a limited portion of the text. It is the position of this paper that, like Shakespeare’s later work Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet was written with a political subtext in mind. Both texts play on the social memory of the War of the Roses, as well as continuing sectarian strife between Protestant and Roman Catholic adherents contemporaneous to the era. One of the most challenging aspects of trumpet playing that pedagogues must teach is how to produce a professional tone. Trumpet students are often good musicians, play correct notes and rhythms, and even have proficient technique. However, many are unable to consistently produce a tone comparable to that of a professional. There are a number of methods that can be utilized to improve a student’s tone quality. This thesis uses the evidence concerning the design and building of the Church of San Vitale in Ravenna to reconstruct, as far as it is possible, the sequence of decisions, activities, and methods that led to the construction of the church, made of bricks and mortar, and whose interiors are covered by glorious colored mosaics and marbles. The historiography on the Church of San Vitale begins with the historian Agnellus, who wrote the Liber pontificalis ecclesiae Ravennatis in the 830s to 840s. Blues for an Alabama Sky is about a family of friends struggling with materialistic themes such as the Great Depression and the economic hardship that came after the Harlem Renaissance. As designers, Blues for an Alabama Sky is a play where it's important to show the black experience during the Great Depression and the Harlem Renaissance, create a space the audience feels they can relate closely to, and help the audience feel the emotion and the characters' need to escape from, or succeed out of, their current environment.

Culture and Language walk hand in hand. Cultural stereotypes exist abundantly, and part of that stereotype exists within the cultural language. Certain speech patterns correspond to particular behaviors. Italians, for example, are known for being very passionate, loud, and romantic. One might say that they are very ‘Italian’.

In fact, most cultures with Latin rooted languages are stereotyped for being passionate and expressive. German, Dutch and Russian cultures are known for being direct and straightforward. Japanese, Korean, and Chinese cultures are known for having more passive, non-confrontational stereotypes. Cultures with similar languages tend to have similar stereotypes.

There is evidence that color terms develop in a specific order in each language. This order can be seen in the hopscotch above. First, a term for black and white (or dark and light in general), then red, yellow and green interchangeably, blue, and then brown. The colors pink, purple, orange, and grey develop around the same time and don't display hierarchical trends. Finaly, a color term for light blue is developed. In languages like Spanish and Russian, their term for this color is completely separate from blue.
