Passages is a collection of wood sculptures and drawings by Arden Carlson, exploring a mesh of southern intimacies and queer musings; underpinned by the logics of belief, grief, and love. The result is a tender field of angelic birds fixed in flight over gnawed surfaces of grain and graphite. The following dissertation details the artist’s logic during the construction of the visual art thesis exhibition, Passages. The writing is composed in an autoethnographic format, backed by supporting anecdotes and creative methodologies that help to route the operational modes used. I use textiles, everyday objects, and my own studio archive to create assemblages that are both abstract and familiar. I follow my body, operating without preconceived notions as to what the materials are or how they should act, creating a liberatory practice of working intuitively, embracing play, and challenging my own conceptions of what’s possible. In my thesis exhibition, Pillowfort Logic, this methodology of reimagining what already exists is fundamental. Porous presents sensory modalities to convey the theme of memories, creating an active site that resists erasure as an immersive art installation. Through a collage of multichannel video performances, Porous is an assemblage of fragmented, abstract, and non-linear aspects of memory. These videos are portals to sites of resistance, collaged and entangled as the essence of memories. All videos touch slightly on the wall, displaying their interconnectedness. The videos coexist with layered audio and live water ambient noise.

Late to the Party is a multi-channel installation that addresses the feelings of desire and alienation that result from the unrestrained image and object production of contemporary life. In this state of total consumption, our personal anxieties are magnified, resulting in a deflated experience where it feels difficult to know yourself as an individual; where the performance of yourself, your peers, and the world becomes an obsessive experience. This installation asks how one can persist in a time defined by its flattening of the human experience.

Quantification frames the world in terms of hierarchies, reputation, and status, thereby making important indicators comparable, and subsequently stripping them of their context, history, and meaning. Numerical knowledge is essential, yet if it is not closely connected to more qualitative forms of knowledge, it leads to oversimplification, homogenization, and the neglect of the surrounding social structure. Overpowered is a temporary installation of a tiled living room, modeled after my own living room in a rental apartment in Fayetteville, Arkansas. It takes its name from a kind of sci-fi electro-disco love song released in 2007 by Roísín Murphy, who breaks down romantic attraction into preprogrammed meanings, chemical needs and matching data - and her sense of losing control, succumbing to the overwhelming forces at play. This interdisciplinary project is designed to explore both the compositional qualities of beer during the brewing process and its impact on society from a cultural, economic, and social viewpoint. Comparing various styles of beer against each other in a historical, societal, and chemical lens allows for a deeper understanding of what creates a beer’s identity, and what makes it different from other styles. Here we analyzed two different styles of beer, a bock lager and a saison ale, in order to determine their chemical composition through their developmental stages to their final product. This paper examines the representation of Irish storytelling in Conor McPherson’s 1997 play The Weir. Drawing on postcolonial theory as well as the historical context of Ireland during the play’s release, I argue that The Weir is uniquely positioned at the intersection of traditional and modern values. Further, I assert that fairy legend is a tool used by the play’s characters to both understand and escape a fluctuating cultural landscape, and ultimately, a way to articulate their own values. Reflections On Linear B, (Part 3): The Egyptian Cat-God Mau, Gerald Leonard Cohen

The cat figure in Linear B sign 80 (with antecedents) likely derives ultimately from the nightly defeat of the Egyptian god of chaos (Apep, aka Apophis) by the sun god Ra, who took the form of the divine cat Mau. An alternative interpretation is set forth in Ferrara and Weingarten 2022, which sees the cat portrayals for wool or woolen products in Cretan Hieroglyphics as traceable to the cat sound /ma/ appearing by coincidence in Greek μαλλός ‘wool’ (possibly of pre-Greek origin). Perhaps both factors played a role (multiple causation).

The Russian writer Ivan Shmelyov (1872-1950) is acclaimed not only in Russia, but also widely throughout Europe for his novels, short stories, and fairytales written with a marked depth of meaning, beauty, and expression. He wrote and published throughout his entire life ~ from the pre-revolutionary years in Russia, into the years of the Revolution, and eventually as an émigré in Europe. Although Shmelyov is celebrated throughout Russia and Europe both in academic and public circles, he is little known to the American people, and English-speaking peoples. In academic circles, scholarship on Shmelyov in the English language is extremely limited. …
