‘A Mirror For Fellow-Citizens’: Cicero’S Proto-Transformational Leadership Ideal Of The Rector Rei Publicae, Evan Rw Dutmer

In this article, I situate Cicero’s discussion of the rector rei publicae and orator perfectus in the De republica and De oratore in the context of James MacGregor Burns’s theory of the transformational leadership in his influential 1978 Leadership. I then consider how Cicero’s rector rei publicae would exhibit leadership behaviors of the Full Range Leadership Model, a popular operationalization of transformational leadership theory. Throughout, I also consider the limitations of applying transformational leadership as an interpretive frame for an ancient Roman leader such as Cicero. Cicero’s vision, I contend, can only succeed in being proto-transformational. The result of this …

Minor Characters, Major Shifts: The Cases Of Pholoe, The Cretan Slave (Aen. 5.281-5), And Cretheus, The Bard (Aen. 9.774-7), Lien Van Geel

Although Pholoe, the Cretan slave (Aen. 5.281-5), and Cretheus, the bard (Aen. 9.774-7), have both received some scholarly attention, I demonstrate that there is additional significance in their fleeting appearances. Virgil’s seemingly rushed treatment of these two characters has larger implications than initially may seem the case, especially when placing them next to Virgil’s use of Homeric epic in the particularly intertext-heavy Books 5 and 9. I demonstrate how these minor characters function as Virgil’s illustrations of Aeneas’ movement away from the Homeric world, as the text progresses towards the proto-Roman project that features prominently in the Aeneid’s narrative.

Despite the burgeoning e-commerce and organised retail sectors, unorganised retail remains a preferred shopping choice for many consumers.

This project, in response to the theological retrieval of desire conducted by Anglican theologian Sarah Coakley in her God, Sexuality, and the Self, descriptively analyses the place of “desire” in the language of the Daily Office and Eucharistic liturgies of the Episcopal Church’s Book of Common Prayer--the regula of Anglican Christians. In Ukraine, soldiers’ psychological resilience is of paramount concern. Therefore, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have developed a new intervention, Combat Path Debriefing, designed to address combat stress and promote unit readiness for soldiers returning to combat. This article outlines the components of Combat Path Debriefing and discusses how it is rooted in principles of combat and operational stress control and the unique characteristics of Ukrainian military life. This perspective offers US and allied leaders real-world experience that can inform future efforts to support soldiers’ mental health and combat performance.

The Dynamics Of Us Retrenchment In The Middle East, Paul K. Macdonald, Joseph M. Parent

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

This article argues that conditions favor American retrenchment from the Middle East because the United States can shift burdens to capable states in the region, there are few areas where US commitments are interdependent, and the local conquest calculus favors defense. Forward military deployments do not positively influence potential threats in the Middle East, and maintaining deployments there will detract from meeting challenges from China. Through comparisons to prior cases of great-power ordinal decline, this article puts America’s modest decline in historical perspective and finds that retrenchment policies will likely have positive consequences.

Domestic Violence: Lived Experiences Of Female Counselors, Franchesca Angelique Ortiz

This qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological research study involved exploring how effective heterosexual female counselors who have survived domestic violence (DV) are at counseling female clients experiencing DV. The goal was to gather rich firsthand data regarding lived experiences of female counselors. This study involved using in-depth semi-structured synchronous interviews with six counselors, listening to lived experiences, reading transcriptions, taking and reading notes in a journal during and after interviews, and analyzing data. Findings revealed female counselors who are survivors of DV are effective in their counseling roles within the profession. Themes that emerged from findings were intergenerational cycles, power and control, …

Researching migrants in various geographical and social environments necessitates the use of culturally sensitive and contextualized modes of understanding. Migrants’ perspectives, lifeways, and knowledge need to be recognized through proper historical and cultural perspectives. This article discusses the use and potential application of culturally contextualized method(ologie)s in conducting insider research in migration and music sociology, both of which have traditionally been dominated by Western methodologies and scholars. This paper considers a large mural of “The Modern Woman” painted in France by the American artist Mary Cassatt for the Woman’s Building at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. It focuses in particular on the large central panel of the mural titled Young Women Plucking the Fruits of Knowledge or Science that depicts women and girls apple-picking. Prior to 1917, the character of the ideal woman throughout Russian history was that of wife and mother. This cultural image for women had been upheld by centuries of legislation and tradition. During and immediately after the Bolshevik Revolution, though, the relegation of women to the home began to be considered bourgeois. Consequently, from the revolutionary era to the rise of Stalinism, the Soviets sought to drastically transform gender roles in Russia. Preaching to his Boston congregation in 1670, prominent Puritan theologian Increase Mather told his listeners that "the Toleration of all Religions and Perswasions [sic], is the way to have no Religion at all." This teaching, notoriously applied in the form of persecution and discrimination to any outsiders or dissenters, illustrates one-half of an interesting paradox that existed within seventeenth- century New England Puritan society. The other half of the paradox can be seen in a sermon delivered by Mather in 1682. In 1598, after the pronouncement of the Edict of Nantes by French king Henry lV, some French Catholics obeyed the edict and afforded religious tolerance to Huguenots (French Protestants} in parts of France. For the most part, ruling elites tolerated small Protestant communities that did not challenge their authority. However, as the seventeenth century progressed, issues of religious tolerance, concord and persecution became increasingly pertinent. Catholic communities often ignored many of the concessions afforded to religious minonttes by the Edict. When Muhammad began preaching publicly in 613 CE, he encountered little opposition from local Arabian tribes. It was not until the Prophet began to denigrate the tribal deities-al-Lat, al-'Uzza, and Manat-that opinion turned against him. Meccan leaders from the influential Quraysh tribe worried that Muhammad's vociferous call for monotheism would decrease the number of travelers making the lucrative pilgrimage to pagan shrines at the sacred sanctuary of Ka'ba. They gave the Prophet several chances to recant or make peace, but he obstinately refused and their persecution of him continued.
