The Vertac Superfund site in Jacksonville, Arkansas was a man-made disaster that affected the city in multiple ways socially and economically. It began with the start of World War II, and the construction of the Arkansas Ordnance Plant in 1942. After the end of World War II, Reasor-Hill bought and reused the area for chemical production. While the company created jobs, it also began to create the setting for an environmental disaster, as more chemical companies traded the site around for chemical production, including the components for Agent Orange. It is inextricably connected to the Arkansas Ordnance Plant, the reuse …

El objetivo principal del trabajo es explorar y mapear la dimensión pedagógica del arte contemporáneo michoacano expuesto en dos instituciones culturales clave: el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Alfredo Zalce y el Centro Cultural Clavijero. Se investiga cómo estas instituciones participan en prácticas simbólicas y educativas que conforman una cartografía cultural. El estudio busca demostrar que el arte contemporáneo no sólo tiene una función estética, sino que actúa como agente pedagógico en la construcción de identidades culturales, históricas y territoriales.

Reading The Prologue Of John's Gospel As Midrash With A View To Examinging A Local Parting Of The Ways, Joseph Mukuna

This dissertation attempts to read the Prologue to John’s Gospel as midrash with the view to examining a local parting of the ways. It is argued that the midrash technique in the Prologue serves to persuade the audience to perceive itself as a religious other. Through John’s use of the midrash technique in the Prologue, there is an engaged effort to create boundaries and construct a new identity for his community. The choice of vocabulary and theological claims are essential markers of how the author intends to construct a new identity. Using rhetorical analysis, the dissertation claims that the Prologue …

The article is devoted to the issue of reforming the Soviet Security Services and their network of agents during the period of de-Stalinization (1953-1956). The directions of this reform were studied, and how these reforms affected changes in their activities in the religious sphere was traced. Based on a study of the KGB reporting documentation, as well as the personal files of KGB employees, the structure of the anti-religious division of the KGB and its peripheral offices was revealed for the first time, the main directions of its activities were indicated, the pseudonyms of secret agents working in these areas …

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the degree of alienation and the prevailing academic identity patterns among Palestinian students at the University of Haifa, and to identify the predictive power of alienation on their academic identity patterns. The study used a descriptive quantitative methodology through random social survey, which was deemed appropriate for the study’s purpose. This paper aims to study the linguistic landscape in the virtual domain of online language instruction. It analyzes the various semiotic forms used by language teaching Facebook pages in their materials and advertisements. The corpus of the study consists of 10 Thai Facebook pages that teach German as a foreign language. The analysis includes 36 profile pictures, 59 cover photos and a total of 1,879 posts. The findings indicate that the majority of these pages predominantly use semiotic elements that index Germany when teaching or discussing German, despite the fact that German is also an official language in Austria and …

This thesis focuses on aesthetic cognitivism, especially the cognitive value of fiction. I mainly discuss two topics. One is whether we can learn from art, and the other is what the learning conditions are under different circumstances. I focus on acquiring propositional knowledge from fiction. My goal is to establish that the cognitive value of fiction is to a certain extent unsafe, although there might be strategies we can take to reduce such unsafeness. Yet, we should not blindly hold an optimistic attitude towards the cognitive value of fiction until more empirical evidence gives us reasons to. I distinguish between …

Comparative Philosophy
The global ecological crisis has posed unprecedented survival challenges to human being. Consequently, ecological issues have naturally become central concerns in philosophy. From the methodological perspective of constructive engagement in comparative philosophy, we have chosen to compare the ecological thoughts of two thinkers—Karl Marx and Lao Zi (老子)—who are separated by vast spans of time and cultural tradition. We argue that Karl Marx holds a mild anthropocentric ecological view, while Lao Zi holds a transcendental ecological view. Many philosophers have refused to recognize Chinese traditions as genuinely philosophical. The conceptual foundations of these exclusionary efforts appear in Aristotle’s dividing philosophy from rhetoric, then associating philosophy with truth, and rhetoric with metaphor. The Chinese have frequently been defined as metaphorical thinkers, in contrast with the logical, scientific, or literal pursuits of Occidental traditions. Because metaphor is classed with rhetoric, and Chinese was associated with metaphor, critics had a way to say that the Chinese weren’t participating in philia-sophia as rational inquiry into truth. I draw on two strands of 20th century philosophy to move us beyond this …

In recent years, comparative scholars and commentators have attempted to find ways to best characterize the opposition between Confucianism and Legalism. For example, it has been argued that Confucianism exemplifies “idealism”, whereas Legalism is a version of “realism” and that their dispute can be construed as a clash between the broader philosophical frameworks of idealism and realism. This article articulates and defends an “interdisciplinary” approach to Confucian political theory and presents Confucianism as a living, dynamic entity rather than merely a reservoir of ideas contained within a set of texts. It argues for a methodology that transcends traditional textual analysis, advocating for an intersectional approach that melds normative, emancipatory, and practical dimensions. This approach seeks to capture the evolving essence of Confucianism as influenced by cultural, institutional, and individual interactions. This paper aims to develop a Chinese feminist philosophy while positioning a transcultural approach as an alternative to transnational and national feminism. It focuses on Chinese feminist scholarship from the mid-1990s to the present. My main argument is that the intellectual development of Chinese feminist scholarship in the past three decades has been significantly influenced by U.S.-centric global feminism and international feminism, while at the same time being drawn from an existing history of feminism in China and reflections on the complicated relationship between global influences and local Chinese conditions. A realist Daoism is best illustrated through contrasting with something less robust. Chad Hansen’s Daoism may be understood as a linguistic constructivism and is thus a good candidate. I challenge his interpretation of the Zhuang-Zi and respond with a realist understanding of daos. The resultant realist Daoism is to be understood given a Daoist realism from Lao Zi’s Dao-De-Jing, whose realist flavour is constituted by some dao sometimes, if not always, outrunning us.
