Sadomasochistic Sensations: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Black Ontology, Embodiment, And Transcendence, Sam Forrey
Sadomasochistic Sensations: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Black Ontology, Embodiment, And Transcendence, Sam Forrey
Master's Theses
Over the past fifteen years, feminists have challenged the notion that sexual sadomasochism perpetuates racial and gender-based violence, and instead claim that the practice can be a powerful site to control and subvert oppression. In this thesis, I contribute to this growing discourse and argue that sensations experienced during practices of Black sexual sadomasochism and attention to the feelings and affects that arise from them can be used to mediate Black being in a violently antiblack United States. Through applications of Black feminist thought, Black anti-humanism, and phenomenology, I claim that antiblack oppression denies Black people the experience of tactile …
Jesus, The Temple, And Early Christian Memory, Scott K. Brevard
Jesus, The Temple, And Early Christian Memory, Scott K. Brevard
Dissertations
Jewish identity during the Second Temple period (515 BCE – 70 CE) was complex, multifaceted, and variable, but many studies of this period treat Jewish attitudes toward one key feature, the Jerusalem temple, as simple and uniform. I aim to complicate this notion by examining early Christian traditions of Jesus’s relationship with the temple. Early Christian memory constructed, transformed, and transmitted traditions about the past into their present contexts. Examining early Christian memory, as represented by canonical and non-canonical gospel traditions in the first three centuries CE, allows scholars to ask how certain figures, institutions, or beliefs were remembered and …
Multiracial Congregations: Transformative Or Status Quo?, Michelle Dodson
Multiracial Congregations: Transformative Or Status Quo?, Michelle Dodson
Dissertations
This dissertation aims to begin to clarify whether Protestant, multiracial churches are in fact challenging racism and, if so, how. To this end, my study turns its attention to social engagement. What role, if any, do these churches play in their larger social contexts? Are they socially engaged in ways that challenge racial injustice? Do they foster this type of social engagement in those who attend? These are some of the questions this study begins to answer. This is an ethnographic study of four congregations in Chicago, IL. Through a careful study of each congregation’s racial discourse and their understanding …
Warm Bodies, Strong Attachments, And The Search For Better Bonds: The Politics Of Human-Animal Entanglements In U.S. Fiction And Media, John Charles Hawkins
Warm Bodies, Strong Attachments, And The Search For Better Bonds: The Politics Of Human-Animal Entanglements In U.S. Fiction And Media, John Charles Hawkins
Dissertations
This dissertation describes human-animal relationships as sites of political longing and meaningful failure in the context of twentieth and twenty-first U.S. fiction and media. I locate three tendencies of imagination prevalent in writing about bonds between humans and other animals: collaboration in regional modernity, refamiliarization in consumer capitalism, and transformation in rationalist patriarchy. These expressions of desire for a different way of relating, I argue, open important windows into the places where current power structures generate suffering and distress. I also emphasize the compelling but imperfect nature of these expressions. The texts and images in this dissertation offer attempts to …
A Womanist Narrative Ethics Of Survival: An Exploration In African American Meaning Making, Lashaunda Janeice Reese
A Womanist Narrative Ethics Of Survival: An Exploration In African American Meaning Making, Lashaunda Janeice Reese
Dissertations
This project creates a womanist narrative ethics of survival framework using literary analysis, sociological and theological comparisons, and reflections on moral dilemmas in fiction and history. Steeped in the African American woman’s experiential perspective, this framework provides an alternative viewpoint through which to examine and analyze ethical issues arising in the context of marginalized bodies. Integrating the Christian faith, the history of chattel slavery in the United States, and the expanding field of African American literature and literary theory, this work posits that fiction provides a rich platform to work through thick moral dilemmas, affording a concrete ethical framework to …
