Benefit Concerts: Truly For The Benefit Of The Cause?, Emma C. Gardner

Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal

Benefit concerts have been used as a fundraising method for urgent issues for centuries, beginning in 1749 with concerts put on by George Handel. The first modern benefit concert was the Concert for Bangladesh in 1971, which proved that these concerts could raise large amounts of money for their cause. Live Aid was put on by Bob Geldof in 1985 Live Aid in response to the famine in Ethiopia. The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness in 1992 was staged following Freddie Mercury’s death and worked to raise money for awareness and a cure for HIV/AIDS. The Concert for …

A Critical Evaluation Of Governance, Democracy And The Rule Of Law In Africa, Bimbo Ogunbanjo Sep 2024

A Critical Evaluation Of Governance, Democracy And The Rule Of Law In Africa, Bimbo Ogunbanjo

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

African leaders came to the conclusion at their summit in Sirté that creating a new organization would be the best way to resolve differing views over the reform of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). The proclamation of Sirté was released on September 9, 1999. The African Union’s Constitutive Act was ratified in 2000 in Lomé at the Heads of State and Government Assembly. Following that, an extraordinary OAU summit took place in Sirté in 2001, and the implementation plan was produced during a meeting in Lusaka. The acceptance of the declaration of establishment meant that in order for the …

Assertion Of Identity In Chicano Poetry, Ruqaya Ibrahim Mohammed, Aida Thamer Salloom Sep 2024

Assertion Of Identity In Chicano Poetry, Ruqaya Ibrahim Mohammed, Aida Thamer Salloom

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The late 1960s witnessed the rise of Chicano Movement as part of the Civil Rights Movements in the United States of America. A Chicano is someone born in the USA with Mexican descendant. Thus, Chicano represents a cultural identity that is neither fully American nor Mexican, exemplifying the in-between nature of cultural hybridity. Chicano literature emerges as a response to the discrimination and prejudice conduct affected Mexicans who migrated into the United States after the 1900s. Although, they are citizens of the United States for over one-hundred years, the Mexican-Americans have always been characterized in a negative manner by U.S. …

The Quadruple Helix Of Strategic Alliances And Its Application For Community Development In Las Acequias De Atrisco, Jorge Garcia Sep 2024

The Quadruple Helix Of Strategic Alliances And Its Application For Community Development In Las Acequias De Atrisco, Jorge Garcia

Regeneración: A Xicanacimiento Studies Journal

In today’s society, the development of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) is imminent yet, large segments of the world remain marginalized. I contend that peer-to-peer and inter-institutional networks can be used to connect local with global systems to close this divide. Using today’s virtual and digital technologies the gap can be bridged using collaboration platforms using different knowledge systems that do not simply replicate the same information. The suggested model represents forming strategic alliances for information sharing and collaboration to empower and support local knowledge systems. The examples discussed show our efforts toward an inclusive approach with communities in full partnership, …

Myth And Monument In Old Town Albuquerque: Southwest Pietà And The War Of Presiding Histories, Eric Castillo Sep 2024

Myth And Monument In Old Town Albuquerque: Southwest Pietà And The War Of Presiding Histories, Eric Castillo

Regeneración: A Xicanacimiento Studies Journal

Luis Jiménez’s Southwest Pietà (1984) intended to combat cultural amnesia that obscured Native Americans’ and Mexicans’ contributions to the state. Jiménez’s Pietà sought to counter the iconography that shaped New Mexico’s colonialist heritage. But Old Town Albuquerque shrouds Native American and Mexican contributions to the region. Albuquerque’s public art has often been deployed as a wedge to write and rewrite narratives about land inhabitants, but the city’s public art tells a powerful story about race and place in New Mexico. This essay explores the socio-historical battle of land memorialization in Old Town Albuquerque and provides a geo-racial perspective about the …

The Holodomor: Death By Hunger, Marco Spann Sep 2024

The Holodomor: Death By Hunger, Marco Spann

Undergraduate Research Symposium

The Holodomor was a man-made famine used by Stalin’s regime against the nation of Ukraine. This deliberate famine was both politically and ethnically motivated for the purpose of progressing the Communist Revolution. Stalin believed there was a growing issue of separatism in Ukraine which threatened the unity of the Soviet Union. Stalin’s regime used collectivization, a system of violent seizure of land, people, and resources, to boost industrialization within the Soviet Union as well as to terrorize Ukrainians into submission. The Soviet Union enacted strict censorship of the Holodomor, setting back conversations on it by decades. The attack on the …

Gender And Genocide: Rape As A Weapon Of War In Darfur, Ella Woods Sep 2024

Gender And Genocide: Rape As A Weapon Of War In Darfur, Ella Woods

Undergraduate Research Symposium

In instances of genocide, gender and ethnicity intersect in such a way that women of a persecuted group undergo a distinct experience from men. This is evident in the case of Darfur, where women of the region have been subjected to rape, forced pregnancy, and more by the Janjaweed and Sudanese government. This gendered violence is not unique to the genocide in Darfur, but examining its details reveals how the international community can better protect not only women in Darfur, who continue to face violence to this day, but also women who are victims of genocide throughout the world.
