Roots And Refuge: A Critical Exploration Of Nature In Black Visual Narratives, Desiree Cueto, Wanda Brooks, Susan Browne

College of Education Departmental Research

This article examined the underrepresentation of Black characters in children’s picture books, particularly in natural settings, and its effect on Black children’s relationship with nature. Through an analysis of four contemporary picture books, the study revealed how visual depictions challenge these exclusions and expand narratives about Black engagement with the natural world. Utilizing visual semiotics and the theory of Black Aliveness, this research underscores the transformative power of illustrations by Black artists in enriching children’s literature and advancing joy.

Book Review - Black Folk: The Roots Of The Black Working Class, Michael Bean

LWLC Faculty Research

Blair Kelley's Black Folk: The Roots of the Black Working Class offers a comprehensive examination of the experiences of working-class African Americans from the Reconstruction era to contemporary times. The book challenges prevailing stereotypes associated with the working class, particularly the imagery that often excludes black Americans, and emphasizes their central role in labor movements and the quest for dignity in work. Through extensive historical research and personal narratives, Kelley highlights the struggles faced by newly emancipated African Americans, who encountered devaluation of their labor and systemic discrimination in the workforce. The narrative intertwines individual stories with broader themes of …

Antropologi Indonesia

This lecture is given in honour of A.B. Lapian whom I had the good fortunate to know. He was a notable scholar whose knowledge of the maritime world of Nusantara was exemplary. As an historian, he had a clear understanding of the broad contours of regional maritime history but equally, he had a concern for the illuminating details of that history. He had a special interest in the Bajau as a maritime population and in their crucial historical role in the trepang trade. I was fortunate to have participated in the International Seminar Professor Lapian organized on the Bajau in …

Middle East Journal of Communication Studies

The article aimed to reveal the level of Arab media coverage of specialized scientific topics and to know the actual need for such programs, especially with the tremendous developments in various fields of life. The descriptive analytical approach was adopted, and a questionnaire tool was used, which was distributed to (205) Arab academics and researchers who were selected by a simple random sampling method.
