The Devil In The Machine: The Doctor Travels Through Time In Chris Bush’S Faustus: That Damned Woman, Verna Foster
The Devil In The Machine: The Doctor Travels Through Time In Chris Bush’S Faustus: That Damned Woman, Verna Foster
English: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Chris Bush’s Faustus: That Damned Woman (first performed in 2020) is a feminist and contemporary adaptation of Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus. The magus is a woman who travels through time from the seventeenth century to the far distant future. In the process, Johanna Faustus becomes a brilliant scientist who attempts to create digital immortality by uploading the minds of billions of human beings to the Cloud. When a power failure destroys almost all of humanity, it is uncertain whether the universal outage is caused by Mephistopheles (in accordance with the expectations of Faustian fantasy) or is simply an unforeseen but …

Celebratory Queer Space: Innovation Beyond Safe Space, Ezra Hebron, Adriane Sparks
Faculty & Staff Research & Creative Activity
"Safe space" refers to a place "free of bias ... or potentially threatening actions [or] ideas ... "* Simply, it is a place where one is accepted. A "celebratory space" is a safe space, but it is ALSO a place that reaches out to queer patrons to make them feel that they are not only accepted by the community, but that they are a part of the community.

How does one begin to talk about the end? Contemporary artistic and literary responses to climate change frequently invoke Romantic traditions, in part because many theorists attribute our current crisis to historical developments in the Romantic period, but also as means of representing how climate change collapses the familiar orderliness of time. This essay is about the narrative forms that emerge when our place of safety is revealed to be as unstable as melting permafrost. It centers on Mary Shelley’s 1825 essay about a frozen Englishman reanimated during that especially warm summer. I read Shelley’s essay anachronistically alongside contemporary climate …

Diversifying Community Connections, Courtney Belt
Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
The focus of this reflective commentary is building authentic relationships with a wider variety of community partners toward greater collective impact and equity in community experiential learning. During my time as Clinical Coordinator in the University of Dayton undergraduate music therapy program, we have added 11 new practicum placement sites with one additional starting Spring 2024. The addition of several of these sites stemmed from music therapy faculty discussions about the desire to serve a greater diversity of clientele in our music therapy practicum courses and expand learning opportunities for music therapy students. "The Words We Do Not Yet Have." A Creative Inquiry Into Human-Plant Relationships, Maliheh Ghajargar
Art Faculty Articles and Research
Climate change, loss of plant biodiversity, and ocean pollution signal the drastic changes in our ecology that call us to attend to the needs of more than human forms of life on Earth. Sustainable design and HCI research are responding to this call by offering methods and approaches to design more sustainable products and systems and recently, more than human design is building momentum. This agenda seeks to reform traditional design processes by decentering the creative agency of the dominant socio-economical group of humans and foregrounding those of diverse Others. In this paper, I focus on plants as a nonhuman …
