“Our Precious Heritage”: Catholic Subject Headings And The Assertion Of Worldview Through Cataloging, Deirdre Sullivan

School of Information Studies - Post-doc and Student Scholarship

Catholic Subject Headings, a list of subject headings focused on describing and representing Catholic belief, ritual, and culture, was first published in 1942 by the Catholic Library Association for use in Catholic libraries. The creation of a cataloging tool solely to represent and serve a distinct religious population allows for an imposition of religious worldview by those utilizing Catholic Subject Headings onto the materials they interacted with. The need for a specifically Catholic cataloging system is also revealing of the complex tensions between Catholics and Protestants and within the American Catholic community in 20^th century America.

Digital Natives, Digital Activists In Non-Digital Environments: How The Youth In Zambia Use Mundane Technology To Circumvent Government Surveillance And Censorship, Gregory Gondwe

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This study investigates the technological strategies the youth in Sub-Saharan Africa employ to circumvent government surveillance and censorship. Centered on the 2020 Zambian youth protests and informed by interviews with 37 participants, we explore the youth’s innovative use of mundane skills to build digital communities, evade government surveillance, and leverage algorithms. The findings indicate that despite limited online access and government restrictions, the Zambian youth creatively employed their local skills to build social networks, disseminate information, and mobilize for social change. However, two contrasting narratives emerge: one celebrating the innovation and resilience of these young people, with the other raising …

Finding Aids

This collection is comprised of cartoons drawn by sports cartoonist Vaughn Stewart (1919-1992). Stewart attended Anniston High School, where he played football, baseball, and basketball in the late 1930s. He went on to play football for the University of Alabama in the 1940s before being drafted into the US Army during World War II. After his honorable discharge, Stewart played two seasons of professional football with the Chicago Cardinals and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Upon his retirement from football, Stewart became a sports cartoonist for newspapers such as The Huntsville Times and The Montgomery Advertiser. Stewart is buried in Highland Cemetery, …

Exploitation, Gentrification, And Commercialization: The Evolution Of Third Spaces For Marginalized People In Post-Democratization Cape Town, Nicole Overbay

This paper explores the impact of high-cost leisure spaces that are emerging in low-income marginalized communities within the Cape Town metropolitan area of South Africa after democratization. The resilience and cultural significance of unregulated third spaces, like shebeens, despite governmental suppression demonstrates the importance of these venues to marginalized South Africans. Through the examination of the gentrification of Bo Kaap and Khayelitsha, this paper argues that the pervasive trend of commercialization (which is supposedly for economic empowerment of said areas), can exclude non-White residents and corrode the generations-long cultural significance created in third spaces. Analyzing Andrea Yaryura Clark's On the Night of a Thousand Stars, this book review essay places the novel taking place during Argentina's Dirty War and examines its quality for teaching readers about the military junta that ruled the country in the late 1970s and 80s. By examining historical events and how they affect each character in the novel, the author evaluates and compares each with how they are portrayed in history. Inspired by old jazz vinyl covers and Rene Gruau‘s fashion illustrations, it has a plain cream background with a thick pink border, mid-century styled typography, and an elegant woman in a turquoise dress. The woman is modeled off of Julie London, a prominent jazz singer from the 1940s to 1960s.

The Rise And Fall Of Caribbean Piracy: A Socio-Technical Analysis Of The War Of Spanish Succession, Maritime Innovation, And Edward Randolf’S Policy, Dominique M. Salinski

This paper argues that the mode and historical context in which piracy ascended in the Caribbean after the War of the Spanish Succession, as well as the historical interrelation between maritime technology and pirate tactics, coalesced into a diachronic Damocles Sword that resulted in the downfall of piracy in the Golden Age. Sanctioning piratical enterprises as a subconventional maritime strategy displayed a geopolitical reliance on piracy by great powers. However, the depraved treatment conventional sailors received across all major European navies generated a social stratum that eventually bore the Golden Age of Piracy, while simultaneously contributing significantly to British naval …

In Evading and Resisting the Draft, this work defines and provides examples of draft evasion and resistance by prospective draftees in the United States during the Vietnam War. This work seeks to consider the motives and actions taken by draft evaders and resisters in the context of the overarching Cold War and tumult of the Vietnam War era. Attention is given to various demographic groups from African American, rural, and working-class communities and the disparities faced by many. The social and legal status of women in Sparta differed from other ancient societies, as they were afforded more social mobility and rights to ownership of property than their counterparts in places such as Athens. While other ancient Greek societies secluded women in the home, women in Sparta were educated publicly and able to move freely in public. However, it is important to note that there is limited material and textual evidence from Sparta, which leaves much up to interpretation and requires scholars to make assumptions based on the practices of other Greek societies. Most of the research surrounding South Carolina’s Stono Slave Rebellion revolves around the planning and execution of the rebellion, the motivation of the slaves that chose to participate in the rebellion, and the immediate response of white slaveowners to the rebellion. Conversely, my research focuses on the long-term impact of the rebellion on the institution of slavery in South Carolina. Over the course of my research, I have explored the impact that the rebellion had on South Carolina slaveholders and lawmakers. I argue that the Stono Rebellion generated a fear response among whites in South Carolina that led to the …
