Mythprint is the monthly bulletin of the Mythopoeic Society, a nonprofit educational organization devoted to the study, discussion, and enjoyment of myth and fantasy literature, especially the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and Charles Williams. To promote these interests, the Society publishes three magazines, maintains a World Wide Web site, and sponsors the annual Mythopoeic Conference and awards for fiction and scholarship, as well as local and written discussion groups.

This article offers an interdisciplinary study of the French Catholic philosopher Jacques Maritain during World War II in order to provide an historical resource for understanding the global dimensions and possibilities at work in modern Catholicism. In 1941, while living in New York City, Maritain helped to cofound and lead the École Libre des Hautes Études (the “Free French University”). An initiative primarily created by American and French intellectuals, the university became an important hub for rescuing and employing nearly two hundred individuals from across the world. The Ministries Of New Communities In The Ivory Coast Scrutinised Under The Lens Of The Theological And Magisterial Vision Of The Church, Joseph Loïc Mben Sj

The goal of this article is to show that the ministries of new communities are in conformity with the theological and magisterial vision of the Church and that, in many cases, they contribute to its enrichment. Following some lexical clarifications, it makes particular use of the schema of the threefold offices of Christ in which the members of new communities partake as the baptized, to show how the ministries realize each of the dimensions of Christ’s office.

The Meanings Of The Hospital De San Lázaro In Seventeenth-Century Manila, Francis Galasi

The Hospital de San Lázaro was a specialized health facility in the early modern Philippines, dedicated to the care of lepers and sufferers of other contagious diseases. While it was established for this specific purpose, its role in colonial society varied. This versatility reflected the distinct priorities and commitments of the groups pulled into its orbit, as each charged San Lázaro with a unique meaning. This article explores how and why these groups—the indigenous Filipinos, the Spanish residents and the Discalced Franciscans—understood San Lázaro in their own way. In The Pregnancy ≠ Childbearing Project: A Phenomenology of Miscarriage (2017), I argued the need to ‘disentangle the plot’ of pregnancy as it has a naturalised and uncritical access to heteronormative gender privilege. In this paper, with the premise that, ‘whiteness is property,’ as argued by Cheryl Harris in 1993, I extend this work to how birthing is only a story for the white entitled few, and as an entitlement, is tied to the making and preserving of the ‘nuclear family’ and ‘family values.’ As this history of birth privilege as white privilege is also a trauma history, I include …

Bryan Spaulding, also known as Letta the Queen, is a 22 year-old drag

performer known for both adult and children’s performances in Southern Maine. In this interview, he discusses his family, including his close relationship with his mother and two sisters; coming out; and friendships and chosen family. He then talks about the meanings of drag and drag performance, as well as his own roles within that genre. He also discusses how drag can serve as a powerful form of political activism. The threat posed by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is a neglected and under prioritized problem across the US government, requiring a dramatic change of approach. Most proposals for Goldwater-Nichols reform focus on geography, either increasing or decreasing the number of geographic commands. Based on our personal experience as Joint military planners at strategic-level headquarters, we argue that the change needs to go further, focusing on global national security problems instead of geography. This article’s analysis and conclusions will provoke conversation across the national security enterprise about how the United States competes with multiple global threats.

Shahida Keen is a 63 year old lesbian real estate agent originally from California but she grew up mainly in New Hampshire and Maine. She currently resides in South Portland, Maine and attended the University of New Hampshire. She worked as a massage therapist before getting into real estate and finding her love for helping women, families and members of the LGBTQ+ community find their home. Throughout her life she has been involved in many organizations in various capacities such as AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, Dyke Marches, Pride Marches, Sexual Minorities Action Committee and Seacoast Response to AIDS.

This research project attempts to explore the perceptions and experiences of Christian religious education leaders regarding the role of Sunday Schools in forming the socio-religious identity of Christian students in Karachi. Employing case study design within the qualitative paradigm of educational research, this study seeks to explore how leaders visualize their role and contribution in shaping the socio-religious identities of the children through Sunday Schools. The data was collected from the three participants through semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis of the data facilitated an understanding of the dynamics of leadership function, including challenges, limitations, and opportunities. The findings highlight the need …

This paper was presented in the Bioethics Section of the Evangelical Theological Society. It explores how arguments for elective abortion and also for some forms of euthanasia treat personhood (and thus the sanctity and sacredness of that individual life) as something that is merited by possessing certain functional capabilities and behaviors. By contrast, this paper argues that in the Bible this personhood is conferred by grace apart from meritorious capacities. Thus the first mimics legalism while the second reflects the principles of Gospel salvation. Academic military historians, government institutions, and defense practitioners have unique purposes for advancing the study of war that influence the way they consume and produce history. Although there is substantial scholarship covering how the discipline of military history has changed since the late nineteenth century, the literature surrounding why it changes and how it is used is less plentiful. Using primary and secondary sources to contextualize debates between historians, this study traces major developments in military historiography, considers the US Army’s relationship with its history, and explores potential connections between a history’s purpose and its use for military professionals.

Parents and physicians often grapple with the agonizing decision of whether to continue life-sustaining treatment for critically ill infants. In this paper, we introduce a novel framework called the Fundamental Conditions Approach (FCA) to guide these difficult choices. Building on S. Matthew Liao’s work, the FCA evaluates whether an infant possesses or can develop the fundamental capacities necessary for engaging in basic activities that constitute a good life. These capacities include the ability to think, respond to facts, develop interpersonal relationships, and interact with one’ environment. We argue that if an infant lacks nearly all of these fundamental capacities and …

The Vietnam War was an inescapable part of life for Americans in the 1960s. This thesis serves to tell the story of one Arkansas boy’s life who serves as a microcosm of the American boys sent overseas to fight in a war that they largely did not understand. The information within the project is drawn from primary source materials collected by the Jacksonville Museum of Military History and the possessions of John Wayne Acosta sent home from Vietnam.
