Moderate Physical Perspectivalism, Emily Adlam
Moderate Physical Perspectivalism, Emily Adlam
Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research
Recent developments in the foundations of physics have given rise to a class of views suggesting that physically meaningful descriptions must always be relativized to a physical perspective. In this article, I distinguish between strong physical perspectivalism, which maintains that all facts must be relativized to a perspective, and moderate physical perspectivalism, which maintains that all empirically meaningful descriptions must be relativized to a perspective. I argue that scientific evidence and philosophical considerations support moderate physical perspectivalism over strong physical perspectivalism. In particular, motivations connected to epistemic humility and the social nature of science are more compatible with the moderate …

Examining State Development In West Africa, Through Senegal And Nigeria, Kasandra L. Housley
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper studies the relationship between the state and armed conflict in West Africa with an emphasis placed on the value, influence, and role of social institutions on the long-term stability of the West African state. The countries of the Republic of Senegal and Nigeria represent the primary focus of the paper. Comparisons are made of the history of each country/state and experience with socio-political conflict in an effort to explain the penultimate place of social as opposed to legalistic or political influences responsible for the long term survival of the independent state in West Africa. The central question explored …

African Women Custodians: Teaching, Toponymy And Tacit Reverie In Heritage Education, Tokie Laotan-Brown
African Women Custodians: Teaching, Toponymy And Tacit Reverie In Heritage Education, Tokie Laotan-Brown
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
This paper investigates the critical role of women in African cultures as guardians of cultural heritage. It explores their central function in transmitting traditional ecological knowledge and practices across generations through established pedagogical methods, toponymic knowledge systems (place-names within cultural landscapes), and the cultivation of tacit knowledge. The paper emphasizes the significance of women's contributions to environmental education, often overlooked or undervalued within Western scientific paradigms. This marginalization restricts access to resources and participation in decision-making processes. It argues for the integration of traditional knowledge systems, informed by women's expertise, into formal education and pedagogy. This inclusion serves to validate …

Editorial: Defying Heteropatriarchal Currents, Bekeh Utietiang Ukelina
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
The strong cultural and political systems that constrain women's autonomy and progress, often rooted in colonial and imperial histories, have shown troubling resilience despite over a century of diverse women's global activism to dismantle them. In the face of these multifaceted attacks on the rights and self-determination of women and LGBTQIA individuals, particularly in the Global South and within marginalized communities globally, it is not the time to retreat into familiar frameworks. Instead, we must resist by taking strong intellectual positions that center postcolonial feminist frameworks, recognizing the diverse and often interconnected forms of oppression women face.
Kamala Harris As Durga: United States Presidential Elections And The Goddess In The Imagination Of Hindu Diaspora, Anisha Saxena
Kamala Harris As Durga: United States Presidential Elections And The Goddess In The Imagination Of Hindu Diaspora, Anisha Saxena
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
The Hindu diaspora in the United States has been one of the most educated and highest earning immigrant groups. They exert considerable influence in the arenas of culture, economy and recently politics. They are attempting to institutionalize Hinduism and “educate” Americans about the religion through creation of lobby groups and the use of social media. Motivated by these recent developments, the article examines the processes of creation, reimagination, and consumption of images of the South Asian goddess in the public sphere, and how these images are perceived by the Hindu diaspora.

Challenging The Glass Ceiling: Gender And Identity In Kanan Devi’S My Homage To All (2013), Raju Rana, Lipika Kankaria, Sutanuka Banerjee
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
This paper deals with the Bengali stage and screen actor Kanan Devi’s autobiography titled Shobarey Aami Nomi (originally published in 1973) which was translated as My Homage to All (2013) and tries to analyse the concept of glass ceiling in terms of her myriad experiences over the course of her career. The paper situates the transitions taking place in the 1920s and 1930s in the cinematic space and the emergence of female actors in the public sphere. Against this background, the paper attempts to examine how Kanan Devi defied the prevalent patriarchal set up of the theatres and studios and …

Yes, It Was My Song: The Cultural And Personal Significance Of Frank Sinatra’S “My Way”, Maren Dattomo '28
Best First-Year Seminar Writing
Regarded as one of the greatest singers of his lifetime, Frank Sinatra embodies the voice of America and of our hearts. Among his many highly recognizable songs, from “Strangers in the Night” to “You Make Me Feel So Young”, none are as popular and as embedded in the minds of those around the world as “My Way” is. This timeless song, released in 1969, tells of a man’s pride in his life as he looks back on it retrospectively. What makes the song so special to so many people is its relatable lyrics, mighty crescendo of orchestral sounds, and Sinatra's …

The Oak Springs Biker, Sarah Rogers
The Oak Springs Biker, Sarah Rogers
Master's Projects
More often than not in teen or young adult-oriented media, the characters and circumstances are ordinarily categorized into archetypes to replicate real-life conditions. Said archetypes in turn periodically portray fabricated or discrediting representations of certain individuals and characteristics, which is what prompted me to revert these representations (specifically those of adolescent characters and contexts) through an artistic, potent deliverable: a screenplay. My screenplay, The Oak Springs Biker, explores numerous adolescents' narratives within a reputable, correctional boarding school, and how these adolescents' lives intersect amid their personal growth and evolvement journeys. Procedurally, I examined six films and their respective screenplays, …

Transgender And Gender-Queer People Belong In Jesuit Higher Education, Morgan Keating, Konstantin Platonov
Transgender And Gender-Queer People Belong In Jesuit Higher Education, Morgan Keating, Konstantin Platonov
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
This paper explores the intersection of Jesuit values and the experiences of transgender and gender-queer campus community members in Jesuit higher education institutions. Despite the adoption of inclusive policies, campus climates often lack the support of minorities, leading to discrimination and deterioration of their mental health. The core Jesuit values—cura personalis, magis, discernment and reflection, service rooted in justice and love, and solidarity and kinship—are examined as the principles that should drive more active inclusion and support. The paper also suggests practical steps to align institutional practices with these values better. By embracing these measures, …

Bringing The Margins To The Center A New Model For Synodal Discernment In Parishes, Robert Choiniere
Bringing The Margins To The Center A New Model For Synodal Discernment In Parishes, Robert Choiniere
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
This article proposes a transformative approach to synodal discernment within parish communities by emphasizing the inclusion of marginalized voices. Traditional models often overlook these perspectives, resulting in a partial and sometimes skewed understanding of parish needs and aspirations. By bringing the margins to the center, this new model ensures a more comprehensive and authentic process of communal discernment. It outlines practical steps for implementing this inclusive approach, highlights the theological foundations supporting the participation of all community members, and shares case studies demonstrating the positive impact of this model. The article argues that true synodality can only be achieved when …
Key Elements Of A Holistic Approach To Communal Discernment That Promotes Synodality In Church And Society, Christina Kheng
Key Elements Of A Holistic Approach To Communal Discernment That Promotes Synodality In Church And Society, Christina Kheng
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Communal discernment is a relatively new topic in the academic and pastoral discourses of the Catholic Church. A variety of conceptions, approaches, and experiences exist to-date. Although this is to be expected and even welcomed, it has resulted in some doubt and even criticism about communal discernment. This article takes stock of the diversity of viewpoints and proposes an approach to communal discernment that would not only be consonant with a synodal church but also promote holistic flourishing in society. It elaborates four key elements which are crucial in this approach, highlighting their theological bases and offering suggestions on how …

Otra Historia Ignaciana: Incluyendo A Las Mujeres En La Historia De La Misión Jesuita, Julia A. Dowd
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Discernir Juntos En Grupos Pequeños, Franck Janin Sj
Discernir Juntos En Grupos Pequeños, Franck Janin Sj
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
