A Conversation On Feminist Digital Humanities, Jessica Frazier, Tamar Carroll, Shweta Sachdeva Jha, Leandra Zarnow

The forum below came into being out of a curiosity to learn more about feminist scholars’ creation and use of digital humanities projects, platforms, and media to forward their research and teaching. Participants discussed the possibilities and perils of feminist digital humanities projects as they shared their unique experiences and perspectives. Larger trends in the conception, design, and operation of feminist digital humanities are visible in the conversation that follows—notably all three participants expressed a desire to work with digital media as a means of producing and sharing feminist knowledge and resistance narratives with broader audiences.

Feminist Digital Center: Building An Online Hub For Undergraduate Feminist Scholarship, Julie Shayne, Tessa Denton, Denise Hattwig

This paper is about The Feminist Digital Center (FDC). We begin by briefly theoretically situating our project in discussions of feminist and open pedagogy, high impact practices, and digital scholarship. Next, we discuss how the FDC came to be, institutionally and digitally, with particular emphasis on the assignments students did to fill the site. We close with why the site matters. We hope readers will attempt some version of this project at your institutions and find value in the model we share.

Without Microphysical Causation, Not Just Anything Can Begin To Exist Just Anywhere, Daniel Linford

According to the Causal Principle, anything that begins to exist has a cause. In turn, various authors – including Thomas Hobbes, Jonathan Edwards, and Arthur Prior – have defended the thesis that, had the Causal Principle been false, there would be no good explanation for why entities do not begin at arbitrary times, in arbitrary spatial locations, in arbitrary number, or of arbitrary kind. I call this the Hobbes-Edwards-Prior Principle (HEPP). However, according to a view popular among both philosophers of physics and naturalistic metaphysicians – Neo-Russellianism – causation is absent from fundamental physics. Terms, Conditions, And Responsibility: Who Is Responsible?, Dara Schoolcraft

In this thesis I explore the dynamics of responsibility in the context of terms and conditions agreements between corporations and consumers. I begin by highlighting how the burden of understanding terms and conditions has been shifted onto consumers and examine real-world conflicts arising from this shift, such as the wrongful death lawsuit involving Disney and data-sharing practices by General Motors. I argue that consumer responsibility, rooted in Kant’s Categorical Imperative, is not a reasonable solution due to barriers like low literacy levels and information asymmetry. This work compares the chapter on Lenten observance in the Rule of the Master and the Rule of Saint Benedict. Textual analysis reveals Benedict’s aversion to the Master’s strict and austere instructions for the Lenten fast, preferring instead to offer moderate guidelines that cultivate in the monk a joyful longing for the Easter celebration.

This essay analyzes idolatry from the context of both the early Christians before the 3rd century as well as the interpretation of the modern day through looking at the early Christian martyrs and their defiance of Rome as an act of abstaining from the sin of idolatry while seeing how contemporary Christians can abstain from idolatry in the modern era, learning from ancient wisdom how to battle this sin.

Can We Ever Arrive At A Conclusive Interpretation Of Scripture?, Jarrod Julian Lee

The Church today is highly fragmented, with thousands of denominations. Unsurprisingly, there is much disagreement on how to interpret Scripture, even within the Catholic Church. This piece examines if an objectively right answer on how to interpret Scripture is possible, focusing on the Gospels, especially Luke’s, and three candidates that can play such an arbitration role between competing interpretations – historical truth, experts and the author’s intention. While no conclusive answer can be obtained, radical skepticism is not an inevitability; the broad parameter that is our community’s intuitions can play a ‘loose’ arbitration role.

This piece examines the beatitude of poverty of spirit, dispelling notions that it necessarily means material poverty. The author proposes that poverty of spirit is for a person to be a beggar of spirit in complete trust and abandonment to God’s will and mercy. It is an awareness that nothing can be gained in this lifetime without God’s help, and nothing will transform us without the saving power of God.

Tangled Up In Red: The Smith Act, Cold War Repression, And The Trials Of Communists In New York And Detroit, Alan Sangster

A comparison of the 1949 Smith Act trial of Communist Party leaders in New York and the 1952 Smith Act prosecution of six Detroit communists shows that Cold War anticommunism in the United States was not uniform; instead, it was shaped by local political contexts. While some New York communist leaders had ties to Soviet intelligence, they were ultimately prosecuted for their political speech which, under the Smith Act, rose to a crime. Conversely, the Detroit defendants had no clear ties to any Soviet intelligence officers and were simply prosecuted under the Smith Act for their political speech and local …

In every season, I visited the Bear Mountain Bridge and captured the same view of a southbound Amtrak train gliding along the east side of the Hudson River on its journey to Penn Station in New York City. Traveling alongside the Hudson, Amtrak forms an essential part of the passenger commute between places like Burlington, VT; Chicago, IL; Albany, NY; and New York City. This thesis presents Homiezation as a practical framework for building transformative relationships across cultural and racial boundaries, focusing on intercultural engagement for scholars, educators, and community practitioners. Based on community research in Marin County, California, it draws on interviews with Latino/a immigrants, first-generation Latino/a citizens, and one non-Latino BIPOC community member. I coined the term ‘Homiezation’ during my community work to describe the process of fostering care, trust, and shared humanity within Third Spaces, where diverse cultures interact and learn from one another.

Six interconnected themes—showing up, trust, social awareness, cultural humility, humor, and compañerismo—form the foundation of Homiezation. These …

Vocational ministry leaders are at an increased risk of burnout due to the demands of their roles in ministry, which can result in burnout. The problem this project addressed was the mitigating effect of the spiritual habits of resting in solitude and the disciplines of prayer, fasting, study and meditation of Scripture, and Sabbath to aid in mitigating incidents of burnout for vocational ministry leaders within South Florida church communities.
