Women Talking (directed by Sarah Polley) is a film that was released in 2022 and is based on Miriam Toews’ 2018 novel of the same name. Both the film and the novel are, in turn, based on events that took place in the early 2000s in Manitoba Colony, Bolivia, where Old Colony Mennonite men raped and assaulted women and girls in their own community. This review contextualizes the movie by explaining Old Colony Mennonite beliefs, religious practices, and migrations, and then it summarizes the film and offers some thoughts about outsiders’ fascination with the film. The Lily of Appalachia series—the first series by Conservative Mennonite novelist Emily Steiner—is set in the Appalachian coal-mining country of Kentucky and West Virginia. The timeline follows Lily Burchett from schoolgirl to middle years, set in (as close as I could tell) the mid-1920s through the late 1930s. Taken together, the three books, Under the Bridge, Under Fire, and Under the Juniper Tree make a full circle, where the dreams and ambitions of the first book are not realized until the last book. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, a group of about 2.5 million Russia Germans immigrated to Germany, benefiting from the German law that recognizes citizenship to ethnic Germans who arrived in the territory as late ethnic Germans resettlers. Including their children, this subset of Germany’s population now numbers about 3.5 million, and about 350.000 Russia Germans have a Mennonite background. Of the 500.000 Plautdietsch-speaking people worldwide, about 200,000 of them live in Germany. There is relatively little linguistic research on the language spoken by the Swiss Amish community of Adams County, IN. The language is remarkable for various reasons. First, it is a kind of a mixed language with closely related parental languages which has so far not been found elsewhere in the languages of the world. Second, it is an example of a complex linguistic inner-Amish separation. This study explores the underlying motivations of consumers’ usage of online dating applications after the breakup of romantic relationships. The experiences of young-adult consumers who went through post-breakup grief are investigated through in-depth interviews. Findings resulted in twelve categories of motivations that participating consumers had regarding their usage of dating apps, in relation to managing the grief after breakup. Motivations are grouped under the categories of coping, updating, and desiring. Moreover, findings also demonstrated diverging pathways in using dating apps for emotional resolution. This paper analyzes Sauron’s “original” name, “Mairon,” in its various contexts (textual, temporal, and linguistic) and then applies it to a reading of the character in order to produce a “capsule characterization” or “minimyth” for the Lord of the Rings himself. The name “Mairon” appears only in a note to a single entry in a list of Eldarin roots, not published until 2007 in the journal Parma Eldalamberon. This niche location suggests one of the many ways in which this name is marginal: typographically, linguistically, narratively, and historically (as in the Secondary World). Poetry spaces provide a place where young people can express themselves and develop skills like critical thinking, empathy, and creativity. They empower young people, particularly those at the margins of society. I organized an extracurricular poetry club, Yo Misma, with Latina adolescents in which we read the work of ten Latin American women poets. As a result of the experience, club members made connections between the poems and their own lives. Furthermore, reading poems by poets they identified helped the girls to find their own voices, both as readers and writers.

Lee Konitz’S Use Of Standards’ Melody In Improvisation, Gonçalo Pazeres, Ricardo Pinheiro

The IASJ Journal of Applied Jazz Research

The main goal of this article is to examine the mechanisms through which Lee Konitz uses the melody of jazz standards in his improvisation process. Beginning with the transcription and comprehensive analysis of five improvised solos, and using the thematic analysis method, we identified melodic ideas coming from the songs on which the saxophonist builds some of his solos. Our conclusion is that Lee Konitz, besides clearly quoting the melody of jazz standards on which he improvises, also frequently uses some of its notes as target-notes, and develops melodic motifs inspired by that same melody.

This analysis of Naima is intended to provide useful conceptual tools for those who are interested in analyzing the harmonic language of modal jazz. The goals: to demonstrate the value of thinking about jazz harmony using slash chords, to suggest specific scale choice options to fit each chord in “Naima,” and to offer an explanation of how jazz composers can use modal harmony to create a sense of harmonic tension, release, and motion. Such an approach can provide a useful framework which will open new vistas of harmonic and melodic vocabulary for jazz composers, performers, and educators.

The Audiotactile Music Theory offers new perspectives for considering the issues associated with the institutionalization of jazz education and the gradual transition from informal transmission situations to formalized curricula. The aim of this article is to show how certain central the concepts of the ‘Audiotactile Music Theory’ can be used in a dual historical and pedagogical perspective, to overcome certain dichotomies that structure discourses on jazz teaching at different times: written/oral, formal/informal and art/popular music. The Audiotactile Music Theory also allows us to question the place of jazz in music teaching institutions today, and our own pedagogical practice.
