An Unlikely Duo: Injecting Art Projects In The Lower-Division Mathematics Classroom, Douglas T. Pfeffer, Christina Durón

Too often society has sterilized mathematics to the point that many view it as drab and deplete of aesthetic intrigue---in higher education, this is particularly true of students in the lower-division classroom. In this paper, we propose the use of art projects as a novel way to alter this perspective. Art projects function as a hands-on, active way to invite students to both identify connections between math and various non-mathematical disciplines as well as view math as overall more intriguing, inviting, and interesting. This paper details our implementation and discusses anonymously solicited survey data that highlights our successes.

Math Is _______: A Study On Prospective Teachers' Perceptions Of Math And Teaching Math, Kayla Mead, Katherine Baker

In this project, we examined one cohort of twenty-eight college students and their perceptions of mathematics at the beginning and end of a semester-long mathematics content course for K-8 prospective teachers (PTs). More specifically, our study explored PTs’ perceptions of what mathematics is and what mathematics teaching is, and how and why those perceptions might change over the semester-long mathematics course. PTs’ perceptions were captured through open-ended surveys and follow-up interviews. Our intention was to better understand the reasonings for changes in perceptions during the course to support teacher educators in their work of preparing prospective teachers.

Stem Major Perspectives For Humanizing Undergraduate Mathematics Classes, Kelly Macarthur, Derek Williams, Bryce Hughes

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Using the eight dimensions of the rehumanizing framework [32] by Gutiérrez, built on a sociopolitical foundation, we report on research findings about what Latin* [41], Native American, LGBTQ+ and/or women science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors at two primarily white institutions (PWI) perceive as humanizing in their mathematics courses. In analysis of interviews with twenty students, we found that the core aspects of a humanized learning experience center relationality and a caring classroom environment. We then explore tensions that arose regarding the implementation of one teaching strategy reflecting the Cultures & Theirstories rehumanizing dimension, suggesting that implementation of such …

Effective global partnerships in higher education promote intercultural awareness (Delong et al., 2011) and influence future study and work abroad experiences by articulating the value of global learning (Lewin, 2009). Seeking to broaden global engagement opportunities for minoritized students, specifically African Americans, one institution developed a virtual exchange program through a global partnership of stakeholders from Ghana, Togo, Benin, Cape Verde, and the United States. The study attempts to find out the systematic questions in the mu'allaqat of Imru’ al-Qais and Amr ibn Kulthum, relying on a number of theories, perhaps the most important of which are cultural, post-colonial, and hegemonic studies, whether political or masculine. This study guide is aimed to help students explore four documentaries about postcolonial culture in Italy: The Fourth Road, Aulò, Beyond the Frame, and Maka. It is the result of a reflection and collective work by a professor who wrote the films and a teaching assistant and previous student of a course on migration studies. This study is primarily concerned with the intersection of the moral and aesthetic theories of Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī (d. 1111). Al-Ghazālī’s theory of aesthetics has been the subject of thorough scholarly investigations and diverse interpretations in the field of Islamic art history since the 1940s. This thesis critiques the premises upon which the use of al-Ghazālī’s writings in studies of Islamic art and architecture were built. It suggests that they lead to what could be described as “the contradiction of unethical beauty.” To overcome this contradiction, it offers a comprehensive interpretation of al-Ghazālī’s aesthetics through analyzing the concept ḥusn in …

This research explores the changes in gender roles among Syrian refugee women in Jordan. Since 2011, more than a million Syrian refugees have settled in Jordan. Around 83% of Syrian refugees have resided in host communities in Jordan and around 70% of the Syrian population come from the rural areas in Syria refugees. Syrian refugees have experienced change on different levels of their lives since the beginning of the displacement.
