Overview:

This book is intended to facilitate the development of aural skills in a variety of ways over the course of a two-year ear training course. Included are sixteen chapters of exercises that progressively develop the reader's abilities in the areas of: interval recognition, rhythmic pattern detection and performance, rhythmic sight-reading and dictation, scale degree recognition, melodic sight-singing and dictation, chord recognition, and harmonic dictation. Hymn tunes with choral settings and lyrics are also included to further develop the sight-reading ability and musicality.

This honors thesis investigates best practices for teaching Spanish in K–12 settings by conducting qualitative interviews with Spanish teachers at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The study focuses on identifying effective strategies and classroom activities that promote student engagement and language proficiency while examining how teachers continue to develop professionally. Conscious of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages’ (ACTFL) Five C’s—Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities—the research highlights communication as the central pillar of language learning. Although 1775 is indisputably the birth year of the US Army, two events occurred on June 14 of that year to which the Army can credit its birthday. One is the adoption by the Continental Congress of the collective militia forces from several colonies outside Boston to form a Continental Army, of which Congress appointed George Washington the commander in chief on June 15, 1775. In addition, the US Regular Army officially dates its beginning to June 14, 1775, when the Second Continental Congress directed 10 companies of expert riflemen to be raised immediately in Pennsylvania, …

Reclaiming Identity: Miné Okubo's Self-Portraiture And Authorship In Citizen 13660, Caroline E. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I argue that Miné Okubo's repeated self-portraiture in Citizen 13660 asserts her authority of the soul author of the text, forcing her reader to acknowledge the perspective in which the story is being told. Through the images of herself, she makes clear the fact that the story is filtered through her personal experience, rather than the widely accepted understanding that the novel is a universal story. While the written account strives for a sense of objectivity, the images of Okubo, especially when analyzed through the context of her contemporaries, including comics and photographers, shows how her work …

Domestic violence is a nationwide social plague that effects millions of women each year and has increased in severity since Covid-19 (2020-2022). In the state of Georgia, 37.4% of women report experiencing some sort of physical violence by an intimate partner (NCADV, 2020). Severity and frequency of domestic violence increases drastically if the victim is living in a rural location. Qualitative studies conducted in Iowa, North Carolina, and Virginia all report that on average, women living in rural areas report 150% more domestic violence experiences at a higher severity than their urban counterparts and must travel on average 300% further …

Temperance is often misunderstood as simple self-denial or restraint, but it is a profound virtue that aligns desires with reason to foster moral balance and harmony. This paper explores temperance through the frameworks of Aristotle and Aquinas, arguing that it is essential for achieving a virtuous life. Aristotle’s concept of temperance as a mean between excess and deficiency emphasizes balance, while Aquinas builds on this by framing temperance as a causal virtue that actively integrates desires into rational and ethical goals. Hieronymus Bosch’S Purgatory In In Bruges, Yalet Yanar

In this paper I analyze the critically acclaimed film _In Bruges_, directed by Martin McDonagh, arguing that the film transforms the town of Bruges into a narrative embodiment of the Purgatory depicted in Hieronymus Bosch’s medieval paintings. The Boschian transformation is achieved through the use of medieval symbolism, themes of sin, repentance, and the afterlife, as well as visual references to Bosch’s characters, scenes, and his Last Judgement triptych in Bruges.

Defined Places, Contested Memories: An Analysis Of Historical Memory In La Ascensión, Chihuahua, Mexico, Joel Gonzalez Parra

La Ascensión, a town in Chihuahua, Mexico, was founded between 1871 and 1872 and represents a unique case of Mexican repatriation after the Mexican-American War. Its settlers underwent a double relocation, first from Doña Ana, New Mexico, in 1850 and again after the Mesilla Riot of 1871. While the Mexican government saw the town’s formation as a strategic emigration to modernize and defend the frontier, historical memory has largely overshadowed this foundational event, favoring the town’s role in the Mexican Revolution of 1910. Joyce Carol Oates is the editor of a 2023 collection entitled A Darker Shade of Noir: New Stories of Body Horror by Women Writers. Her own story in the collection, “The Chair of Tranquility (from the Diary of Mrs. Thomas Peele, Trenton, New Jersey, 1853),” takes on a fuller meaning when considered in a dialogic relationship to Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s 1892 story “The Yellow Wall-Paper.” By first outlining how Gilman’s and Oates’s stories can be seen as sister stories, then analyzing some essential differences operated in Oates’s story, the author is finally able to discuss the dialogic effect of …

“Sympathize/don’t rage” was Joyce Carol Oates’s call as she concluded a tweet on the rights of people who are transitioning (20 February 2023). This statement could well be considered a prism through which we might see her work. Indeed, the author depicts a variety of characters handling situations very differently – and readers are left dealing with their own sympathy with them. Babysitter (2022) is a case in point in this regard: Hannah, the main female character, appears as a submissive figure replete with gender and class prejudice and lacking agency. Juliana, the protagonist of Joyce Carol Oates’s 2018 novella “Night, Neon,” is portrayed as a confident, empowered young woman who appears to embody the postfeminist ideal of “having it all”—autonomy, agency, and adherence to traditional feminine norms like marriage and motherhood. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes evident that Juliana’s sense of empowerment is largely performative, concealing deep-seated vulnerabilities and unresolved traumas. Through a series of flashbacks revealing Juliana’s troubled past, Oates critiques the postfeminist tendency to reinterpret traumatic experiences as tools for self-empowerment and resilience, suggesting that such a framework may obscure the systemic and pervasive nature of …
