Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My thesis and the corresponding exhibition will look at contemporary artists, specifically Jen Davis, Lauren Greenfield, Leslie Lyons and Licia Priest, who examine and oppose the negative effects that art and pop culture have had on perceptions of the female body and, especially, on women’s perceptions of their own bodies. Focusing on the last three decades, I will contextualize my exhibition by examining art historical and feminist texts that analyze representations of female bodies. My project will be informed by contemporary psychological and sociological studies of women’s attitudes towards their bodies: Joan Brumberg’s The Body Project, Naomi Wolf’s The Beauty …

Language Difference And Expansive Learning : Negotiating Concepts, Contexts, And Identities In Writing-Related Transfer Studies., Megan Jeanne Bardolph May 2015

Language Difference And Expansive Learning : Negotiating Concepts, Contexts, And Identities In Writing-Related Transfer Studies., Megan Jeanne Bardolph

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation offers a theoretical examination of current conceptualizations of writing-related transfer of learning in Rhetoric and Composition. I analyze the models presently available for understanding writing-related transfer of learning and argue that they are constrained by narrow conceptions of language use/users that do not accurately reflect the rich and varied language practices student writers perform, nor the multilingual audiences students with whom students will interact when they leave our classrooms. As a result, I argue that transfer has been difficult for writing studies scholars to pinpoint and locate. Building on theoretical models of language from applied linguistics and second …

Stars For Large Orchestra., Matt Wetmore 1989- May 2015

Stars For Large Orchestra., Matt Wetmore 1989-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

STARS is a work for full orchestra depicting four of the known stars in our galaxy. Each movement is a character piece musically illustrating a particular star by a separate pitch collection: the first movement, Sol, depicts our very own sun rising in the morning sky, blooming slowly from the lowest register to the highest, and uses elements of the pentatonic pitch collection to do so. The second movement, Sirius, shows the fun, playful, and unpredictable side of the titular dog star, also the brightest star in our night sky. Here, a version of the diatonic set that freely and …

Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye, Elizabeth Henry May 2015

Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye, Elizabeth Henry

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper studies the evacuations of schoolchildren in Great Britain during the Second World War and examines how the progress of the war affected the government's organization and implementation of these evacuations as well as the public's opinions of and reactions to them. This study focuses on the perceived need for evacuation at various points in the war (1939, 1940, and 1944) and the ways in which this need affected how the government and the public viewed and endured the trials and tribulations of these mass movements of a large portion of Great Britain's vulnerable population. It argues that as …

Sights-Of-Interest: Denial Of Danger In Living Spaces, Rachel Lambert May 2015

Sights-Of-Interest: Denial Of Danger In Living Spaces, Rachel Lambert

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Exploring the illusion of protection, I constructed a fiber-based installation to recreate the experience of photographing outside and inside living spaces. This body of work is about the allure of the photographic experience. It is about the experience of seeing, noticing, and thinking that occurs while looking through the camera’s viewfinder. It is about unconsciously ignoring the physical dangers that live in the picturesque land photographed.

In response, I created a two room installation. Two household living rooms are staged as conceptual “living spaces.” One room simulates a damp swamp floor; and the other, the interior of a warm-blooded body. …

Modal Logic And Ontological Arguments, Alex Yousif May 2015

Modal Logic And Ontological Arguments, Alex Yousif

Masters Theses

In this thesis I will evaluate various modal ontological arguments for the existence of God. I will evaluate Kurt Gödel’s modal ontological argument (as preserved by his student Dana Scott), and Anthony Anderson’s emendation of it. I will conclude that both Gödel’s argument and Anderson’s emendation fail. I then propose a revised version of C’Zar Bernstein’s ontological argument. I conclude that while this argument is not rationally compelling, it is more plausibly sound than not. Finally, I will demonstrate that some extant general objections to modal ontological arguments are unconvincing.

The Experiences Of African-Born Women Faculty And Administrators At Colleges And Universities In The United States, Oyibo H. Afoaku

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to document the experiences of African-born women faculty and administrators at colleges and universities in the United States. The study explored the factors that motivated African-born women to immigrate to and extend their stay in the United States beyond completion of their education; factors they perceive as constraint on their quest for self-empowerment and identity as foreign students, college instructors, and/or administrators, and parents; and factors that have enabled them to adapt to their host culture and achieve their educational and professional goals even though they had to contend with multiple challenges associated with …

Michael Manley’S Nationalism In The 1970s: An Analysis Of The Speeches As Prime Minister Of Jamaica., Peta-Ann Cherie Long May 2015

Michael Manley’S Nationalism In The 1970s: An Analysis Of The Speeches As Prime Minister Of Jamaica., Peta-Ann Cherie Long

Theses - ALL

Abstract

Leaders and aspiring leaders nurture visions of the nations they want to develop. To fulfill their visions, they develop platforms based on their perceptions of national problems. Ideally, platforms become programs that can create better futures for their people. This concept of governance illuminates the leadership of Michael Manley, who embraced a democratic socialist philosophy to map the future of Jamaica in the 1970s. With campaign slogans like “Better Must Come” and “Forward Together,” Manley conceived of a nation that would embody principles of equality, social justice, and co-operation. I argue that his efforts to develop this new society …

Visceral Space: Dissection And Michelangelo's Architecture, Chloe Costello May 2015

Visceral Space: Dissection And Michelangelo's Architecture, Chloe Costello

Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis focuses on the architectural work of Renaissance master Michelangelo Buonarroti, who, perhaps, is better known for his painting and sculpture than for his architecture. Nevertheless, his buildings are revered by architectural historians, such as James Ackerman, for their mimicry of bodily motion and emotion. Under the influence of Renaissance humanism, it was not uncommon for architects to validate their designs by reference to the human body, for example, basing the dimensions of a basilica on ideal bodily proportions. But, Michelangelo's approach in his earliest architectural designs, such as the Medici Chapel (1521-1524) and the Laurentian Library (1523-1525) in …

A Diplomat's Portrait: The United States Department Of State's View On French Imperial Policy Regarding Syrian Religious Minorities Of 1918-1922, Dominic Charles May 2015

A Diplomat's Portrait: The United States Department Of State's View On French Imperial Policy Regarding Syrian Religious Minorities Of 1918-1922, Dominic Charles

HIM 1990-2015

This thesis examines documents from the US department of State relating to the Internal Affairs of Turkey in the years of 1918-1922, to answer questions pertaining to French imperial policy directed toward minority groups in French Mandate Syria, which included present-day nations of Lebanon and Syria. Of the many minority groups present in French Mandate Syria, I chose to examine the Maronite, Druze, Alawi, Eastern Christian, and Armenian communities because of their significant role in the state-building of Syria and Lebanon. By using documents originating from US diplomats, this thesis attempts to present the United States’ view on these imperial …

From Reynolds To Lawrence To Brown V. Buhman: Antipolygamy Statutes Sliding On The Slippery Slope Of Same-Sex Marriage, Stephen L. Baskind May 2015

From Reynolds To Lawrence To Brown V. Buhman: Antipolygamy Statutes Sliding On The Slippery Slope Of Same-Sex Marriage, Stephen L. Baskind

History Theses - Archive

In 2003 in Lawrence v. Texas (striking Texas' sodomy law), Justice Scalia predicted in his dissent the end of all morals legislation. If Justice Scalia is correct most, if not all, morals-based legislation may fall. For example, in recent years state laws prohibiting same-sex marriage have fallen to constitutional challenges. Ten years after Lawrence in 2013, a Utah Federal District Court in Brown v. Buhman, though feeling constrained by the 1878 Reynolds case (which rejected a First Amendment challenge to an antipolygamy law), nevertheless at the request of a polygamous family concluded that the cohabitation prong of Utah's anti-bigamy statute …

Buddhist Meditation And The Possibility Of Free Will, Rick Repetti May 2015

Buddhist Meditation And The Possibility Of Free Will, Rick Repetti

Publications and Research

I argue that an analysis of Buddhist meditation theory and practice may be used to ground a model of the possibility of free agency that stands up against four powerful arguments for free will skepticism in contemporary analytic philosophy: Peter van Inwagen’s consequence argument, which asserts that if choices are lawfully necessary consequences of prior events, then they are unfree; Derk Pereboom’s two arguments for hard incompatibilism: the manipulation argument, which asserts that manipulated choices are unfree, determinism is functionally equivalent to manipulation, and thus determined choices are unfree; and the randomness argument, which asserts that we cannot claim authorship …

Appalachian Studies As An Academic And Activist Field, 1970-1982, Emily Booker May 2015

Appalachian Studies As An Academic And Activist Field, 1970-1982, Emily Booker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the formation of Appalachian studies as an academic field from roughly 1970 to 1982. First, this thesis analyses regionalism and what defines a region, focusing on the different contexts and narratives through which Appalachia has been described. Second, this thesis examines how scholars and activists in the region challenged prevailing narratives and sought new ways to examine and contextualize the region. Efforts to challenge stereotypes and address the social, political, and economic problems of the region galvanized academics and activists alike. Despite their similar work and shared vision for an interdisciplinary regional field, academics and activists often …

Collateral Damage: Exploring The Metaphors And Realities Of War In Three Fictional Narratives, Jessica N. Dancisak

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Since earliest recorded history, human beings have been going to war with each other. It seems that this is an integral and inescapable part of our existence. As humanity has advanced and expanded over time, our wars have advanced and expanded in stride, to the point that we are capable of destroying all life on the planet “at the push of a button.” This awesome power, coupled with an impulse so primal that we struggle to understand it, is a dangerous and terrifying prospect. It is vitally important that, in this age of drone strikes and nuclear proliferation, we do …
