Introduction To Death, Joan Owen

Death meets each of us some time. But perhaps, the most vivid memory of death springs from the first introduction. I shall never forget the little duck named Ivory, who acquainted me with death.

The Linguistic Adventures Of Leo And Neo, Kenneth Hopkins

The problems forced upon civilization by the development of languages are numerous, baffling, and elusive of solution. These problems, furthermore, have never been comprehensively catalogued, and thus have escaped detection by the masses who labor on, under the resulting handicaps, oblivious of the fact that their every action is molded, inhibited, guided and otherwise affected by language...

Blake And The Child, Sally Forsythe
Manuscripts
In "The Lamb" from Songs of Innocence, William Blake captured the sensitive imaginativeness, the knowledge and the awareness of childhood in a filigree of delicate language, verse form, and understanding. He lifted the veil of childhood and revealed that period of life in which imagination, not yet restricted, gives the child a pure understanding of God an his relations to Him and the the world about him...

The Obscured Pedagogical Influence Of The Roman Partimento Manuscripts, Alexander Amato
The Obscured Pedagogical Influence Of The Roman Partimento Manuscripts, Alexander Amato
Bright Ideas Conference
The partimento was a hand-written leaflet that taught eighteenth-century Italian musicians how to compose. It is assumed that Italian influence on musical composition, although strong in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, ceased in the 18th century. Musical treatises like Rameau’s Traité de l’harmonie and Kirnberger’s Die Kunst des Reinen Satzes in der Musik were more widely disseminated. These treatises emphasized a new approach: one that focused on the chords in the music. The Partimento’s influence mostly stayed in Italy, being passed down from teacher to student. This resulted in a distinctive Italian style of composition in the 18th …
Comparative Study Of Operating Mass Media Facilities In Texas, Al Greule
Comparative Study Of Operating Mass Media Facilities In Texas, Al Greule
Bright Ideas Conference
Mass Media programs in colleges and universities endure competition from other programs and must also take on the challenges of rapid technological changes to keep their programs up to date (or “state of the art”) for their students. The focus of each program is slightly different and technology available to the student varies greatly from institution to institution. Furthermore there is only some similarity as to how each institution grants student access to equipment and lab facilities.
This study attempts to determine the issues that are most challenging to operating academic Mass Media programs and examine the various ways programs …

An Attempt At Clarity: Understanding The Lives Of Livia, Tanaquil, And Alexandra, Rachel A. H. Wilson
An Attempt At Clarity: Understanding The Lives Of Livia, Tanaquil, And Alexandra, Rachel A. H. Wilson
Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects
This project looks at the lives of three women from antiquity, Livia, Tanaquil, and Alexandra, and determines what can and cannot be known about them. Livia, Tanaquil, and Alexandra were all powerful women during their time, but today, the stories of their lives are confusing and contradictory. Through the medium of fiction, this project brings Livia, Tanaquil, and Alexandra to life as characters in a story in order to highlight the problems that arise when studying these women. There are three essays that accompany the story, one for each of the women, which discuss the difficulties in interpreting the available …

Google's #Freeandopen Campaign: Using A Documentary To Raise Awareness Of Internet Regulation Among University Students, Shelby N. Rice
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The internet was founded as a non-proprietary tool by which computers could connect and share information reciprocally. This philosophy has allowed the internet to become a fundamental resource in higher education and provides a window by which students can experience the world around them. The primary focus of The #freeandopen Documentary is to maintain an uncensored web by raising awareness of the forces that act against the freedom of the internet and of the resources available to contribute to the cause. The short, 13-minute documentary is funded by Google’s #freeandopen Microgrant of $2,000. It features interviews from students who are …
老人与海: The Cultural Classroom Handbook, Jessica Ann Brumley
老人与海: The Cultural Classroom Handbook, Jessica Ann Brumley
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and The Sea has gained global recognition as a literary masterpiece. This novel, although written by an American, is set in Cuba and features cultural elements from Latin America as well as North America. Classrooms around the world use this novel as a means of teaching English to second-language learners because of the comparatively simple grammatical structure and concise word choice.
One specific instance of this is the Chinese classroom, where some students have used The Old Man and the Sea as an introduction to American literature. Hemingway’s work, which has since been translated …
Ways We Remember: Rethinking Symbols Of Italian American History And Imagining Alternative Narratives, Kathryn N. Anastasi
Ways We Remember: Rethinking Symbols Of Italian American History And Imagining Alternative Narratives, Kathryn N. Anastasi
American Studies Honors Projects
My project re-examines dominant historical narratives of Christopher Columbus and assimilation of southern Italian immigrants to the United States. Arguing that such narratives partly result from historic anxiety surrounding southern Italians’ unstable whiteness, I challenge masculinist, white-washed histories by centering and contextualizing a history of Italian immigrant garment worker and labor leader Angela Bambace (1898-1975). By weaving my own exploration of my Italian immigrant ancestors’ pasts throughout, I ultimately encourage other white descendants of European immigrants to explore their histories in a critical and loving way that "resurrects" histories without sanctifying historical figures or their white descendants to racial innocence.

7 Things Churches Can Do To Make Queer People Feel Welcome, Erin E. Duran, Christin N. Taylor
7 Things Churches Can Do To Make Queer People Feel Welcome, Erin E. Duran, Christin N. Taylor
Center for Public Service Research
For as long as I can remember, the church, for me, has been a place characterized by shame and hurt. I remember Christian high school friends telling me that I would go to hell for being Queer. I remember hearing sermons from televangelists about the evils of homosexuality, and church leaders pressuring youth leaders to cast out their Queer members. I've heard more talk of "love the sinner, hate the sin," and "God didn't make gay," than anyone should, and I've even received personalized hate mail declaring that "God hates dykes." [excerpt]

The Mighty Equine: The Influence Of Titian And Rubens On The Equestrian Portraits Of Velázquez, Kristine Susan Woeckener
The Mighty Equine: The Influence Of Titian And Rubens On The Equestrian Portraits Of Velázquez, Kristine Susan Woeckener
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velázquez (1599-1660) is considered by many to be one of the greatest artists Spain has ever produced. This essay explores the relationship between the painters Titian (ca. 1488-1576), Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), and Velázquez. In analyzing aspects of Velázquez's equestrian portraiture of the family of Philip IV, circa 1635-1636, Isabel of Bourbon, Infante Baltasar Carlos, and especially that of the king himself, Philip IV, and comparing them with Titian's Charles V at Mühlberg (ca. 1548) and The Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand at the Battle of Nördlingen (1634) by Rubens, it is possible to see stylistic similarities between …

Abstract
According to an extensive 2013 survey conducted by the National Eating Disorder Association which examined 165 different college campuses to see what was being done on campuses nation wide to spread awareness about disorders as well as treat them. There is still a significant gap in perceived need and available counseling or nutritional services by staff specializing in eating disorders on college campuses throughout the country” (National Eating Disorder Association). Therefore, the purpose of this honors project is to develop a comprehensive training guide for resident advisors on Bowling Green State University’s campus to utilize in order to support …
